Iowa State coach got a technical after his team scores a basket. No idea what that was about. Afterwards he made a point to say something to our broadcast crew, I wonder if Jay has something more to share. Long pause from him and Kelly after that. I noticed that as well. Right before Fennelly spouted off to him, Jay had said something to the effect of: "Coach Fennelly gets a technical foul. He has been in the refs' ears all night." Nothing too terrible, but Coach was obviously worked up. Although I'd love to hear the scandalous details, I doubt Jay throws Bill under the bus like that. He's too much of a professional. Maybe someone that was sitting nearby can sate our curiosity.

Congratulations to the Norwegian Mafia in the win over the #23 Cyclones. It does make one think about the ability to bring in P5 schools to visit and level the field. What happens if this becomes a regular occurrence? Do the P5s just stop coming to Vermillion or Brookings? I don't think so. The success of the South Dakota schools helps the RPI of anyone they play. To me if you are a P5 school you want to play teams like USD and SDSU in the non conference to boost your own RPI instead of playing lesser competition at home. SDSU has had success at home against P5 schools for a few years no but are still able to bring in teams like Oregon this year.

I'm guessing we see a little more press from teams, after they watch our 4th quarter struggles. I thought the girls actually handled the press very well, but it was disruptive enough to hurt our shooting after they broke through. Great experience with an aggressive press, along with the Wichita State game.
I don't know what UW-Green Bay does, but I'm sure full-court press is in their repertoire, being a top-10 defense.

Awesome win over a ranked opponent, but don't act like we have never beat ISU before. In fact, we are now 3-0 against them in Vermillion and 5-6 overall. This is obviously a very good team they brought to Vermillion, but we should expect to win these games, which I think the team did. A stronger finish and this one is a blowout.

We’ve had trouble with the press since WNIT last year. Surprised they didn’t do it sooner.
I thought the officiating was suspect each way last night. The ponytail seemed like she was getting paid by how many times she blew the whistle. Supposedly one of those refs does WNBA games.
It was a physical game. Get over it. Are we supposed to let the bigger team, literally and figuratively, come in and push us around? I thought Sjerven did a great job of being able to match their size inside. She would’ve been very helpful last season.

I'll just say one last thing on this game. I thought the coaching was excellent, especially at the end, when ISU was mounting a comeback. Great clock management and substitutions to avoid our best players fouling out. I mean, we had ALL 5 of our starters with 4 fouls each, and nobody fouled out. Amazing.

Easmus is right. Wish we had had Sjerven last season. She looked great last night.

I’m trying to picture Alison or Ciara trash-talking on the court.... 😂😂😂 I completely agree with you. This team is a really really good basketball team comprised of some really really good kids. The exhibit no attitude of negative variety at all. I was never the biggest fan of women’s basketball in the past because it seemed like it was dribble dribble pick up the ball. Throw it away. But Coach P has these kids playing a really really fun brand of basketball. They are so much fun to watch. And top it off with being great kids, if you don’t enjoy the ride the next few years something is wrong with you. We are witnessing something special

For those of you who made it to the game - how bad were the roads? Have to think the crowd size is dramatically smaller than we would have planned on. The roads over were awful. I live 2 hours away (normally) in NW Iowa and took me 3. The way home was slightly better. First hour was tough sledding but then got better. Two hours 40 minutes on way home. In bed by midnight

I trip that normally takes 45 minutes took me 1 1/2 hours, max speed 30 mph, and I am an aggressive driver that is used to driving on frozen lakes. Semis were stopped in the middle of the road because they couldn't get up hills, or would slide down hills out of control, multiple cars in ditches, rollovers. Don't know which road you traveled but HWY 3 and C-38 in NW Iowa were death traps last night and this morning. Kudos to you for making the trek over and back. I would say last night's ice weather definitely had a negative effect on attendance.

ISU rebounded with a 91-82 win over Arkansas today. That might partially explain why RealtimeRPI has us at #11. That site updates multiple times a day. Our opponents’ opponents’ are part of the formula too. I’ll wait till I see it on the NCAA site before I get too excited, though.

I've been wanting to put together a list of power teams that have visited SD and the results, found the time and here is what I've got for the past 5 seasons:
(I included Big East teams because the conference averaged 3 bids per year during this time)
Games in Vermillion: 2018-19 - #23 Iowa State L 2017-18 - Creighton L 2017-18 - Michigan State L (WNIT) 2017-18 - TCU W (79-71, WNIT) 2016-17 - Illinois L 2015-16 - Marquette L 2015-16 - Washington W (77-64, went on to Final Four) 2015-16 - Creighton L (WNIT) 2015-16 - Oregon L (WNIT) 2014-15 - Creighton L (WNIT)
Games in Brookings: 2018-19 - Creighton L 2018-19 - Oregon TBD 2017-18 - #4 Louisville W (68-64) 2017-18 - Oklahoma L 2016-17 - Creighton L 2016-17 - Colorado W (81-75 in OT, WNIT) 2015-16 - Arkansas L 2015-16 - #3 Notre Dame W (75-64) 2015-16 - #16 DePaul L 2014-15 - Creighton W (88-81)
Big 12: 1-2 Big 10: 0-2 Pac 12: 2-1 ACC: 2-0 SEC: 0-1 Big East: 1-7
That's a combined record of 6-13 or 5-8 if you take out Creighton (not sure you should, they've been in the NCAA round of 32 the past two years). There were 4 ranked teams and another that went to the Final Four in that group, and no one escaped comfortably.
In short, power teams are not wise to visit SD. Several of these teams never agreed to visit and the WNIT forcing them here has helped prove we are a lot closer to the power teams than the selection committee would ever acknowledge.
