Grant OlsonIMO this would be a tremendous candidate as DC. Very smart player, a winner, a massive competitor, and someone that knows what a winning FB program and a winning defense needs to look like. Also from Minnesota - Could amp up USD's recruiting success in Minnesota immediately. How do you know him?

Also from Minnesota - Could amp up USD's recruiting success in Minnesota immediately. How do you know him? Two people I know well, know Grant. They have both said he would be an excellent coordinator and will be eventually. He has all of the characteristics and experience I would want (if we were going to hire a DC that does not have DC experience). Do you remember watching him as a player at NDSU? Now as a coach, he has done great work with coach Mallory and is an up-and-comer in the profession. He knows the MVFC and knows the recruiting footprint USD needs to win battles in. NDSU has had one of the best defenses in all of FCS for years - we would be crazy not to try and do what we can to learn from them. He knows how to be a part of a turnaround (Ind St), and he knows what a winning organization looks like from top to bottom. His home is Minnesota and that is a definite area USD could improve recruiting. He would provide connections to that area (and respect) immediately. All conjecture and probably a waste of breath since I have no input (thank goodness for the program) on who will be hired. Just getting the discussion rolling.

I trust your judgement and like the pedigree. Probably the only question mark is age and experience. What process does a head coach go through to vette a prospective coach? Use contacts you know and trust? Hire a search firm? I’m curious what process Coach Nielson will use to get a list of names.

Chances are slim and none, but I thought Jason Petrino did a damn good job as DC for us before. Makes one think he should’ve been retained.

Since we are throwing names out there, any thoughts on Steve Bell, current head coach at D3 Augustana College, his son Carter is one of our commits? More of an offensive coach, but lots of experience and coming to D1 would be a big upgrade along with the chance to watch his son play.

Jason has been head coach for 3 years out in Montana and has gone 4-7, 6-5, and 8-4 and in the playoffs this year. Obviously knows what he’s doing and I wish for him continued success.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Forgot Petrino was a HC these days.

Coach Nielson has a tremendous reputation and established network. I trust that he will find quality replacements for any coaching changes that may occur.

According to FootballScoop.com Southern Illinois (FCS): Source tells FootballScoop Rocky Mountain College head coach Jason Petrino will be the new defensive coordinator at Southern Illinois.

Petrino will be a D1 head coach someday. Good for him.

I would highly doubt it as Bob has a completely different style than traditional NDSU football. Bob hasn't had great defenses and runs a hurry up offense that doesn't allow the team to control the ball.
