Pretty incredible that our OOC losses came from teams that are:
Montana #8 (4-1 with their lone loss to FBS Oregon) Oklahoma #6 (5-0) Houston Baptist RV (4-1 with their lone loss to FBS UTEP by 2 points) 13-2 combined record
It doesn't take the sting out of the losses (especially Houston Baptist) but it shows we have played a high level of competition thus far. As long as our guys don't get too down over the slow start, I think we are in a better position than our record shows.

As an Oklahoma fan who follows South Dakota in FCS I am glad to see the Coyotes have started playing well. In watching the OU-USD game I really did think USD had some talent. Great to see the results of these last couple of games. Would love to follow the Yotes in the playoffs!!

Outside of the HBU game with 3 CB's out, I'm not sure what the outsiders expected the Yotes to do this year up to this point. The Montana game looked like a toss up at the beginning of the year and they are now #5. Yotes took care of ISUb and MSU like they should have if they are a good team. Beat UNI at their place and the Yotes won't be as overlooked.

Don't want to say must win, but this is a must win game to salvage the season and completely turn it around.

Congratulations to Darin Greenfield for breaking the Coyotes' all-time record for career tackles-for-loss. He notched one in the first quarter Saturday, giving him 51.0 for his career, surpassing Bill Gassen's mark which had stood since 2002.

I have taken a deliberate break from posting on here. I wanted to see at least half the conference season before weighing in on what I am thinking and thoughts about the year. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and analysis of where we are as a program and here is mine:
This year has continued a trend that we have seen for the almost four full seasons under this staff as well as our entire D1 experience to date. We have upgraded our athleticism and talent across the board in every position group. The team is much faster and overall stronger. The play has remained erratic with wild swings from one game to the next and one series to the next. The excuses that we are young, that we are building, that we are close to turning the corner. All of that needs to stop - stop making excuses for the program. We are fully funding this program. We are at full scholarship strength for the FCS level and even pay cost of attendance. We have state of the art training facilities and a transformational remodel going on to our football facility. We are paying our HC a very competitive package along with his staff. I think our schemes are sound. I think we have players that have the ability to make plays. I do not think the players are fully buying in and playing with maximum effort and passion. I hope players don’t read these forums, but if you are a player and read this- here is some free advice- grab any slacker on the team by his face mask and demand he fully commits to being in and playing with maximum effort. If he doesn’t get in, find a way to get him removed from the team. Your college career is too short to put up with the lethargic and undisciplined play we are seeing too often. If players aren’t listening to the coaches - take it upon yourself to be a leader and get their attention focused where it should be. Sometimes organizations need to take action to forcefully remove dead weight. I will always support the Coyote athletic programs and will continue to show up to every game I can. The reality is that casual fans will not show up for the product that has been trotting out on the field. The players are going to have to win if they want to get people to show up. They aren’t going to show up and wait for a winner while they watch the team get beaten silly out there.
It is not good enough to have 70% or 80% of the team fired up and all-in. It takes everyone. We have to get to a point where we can play teams that we don’t have a major athletic advantage against and put ourselves in position to win. Right now when we face a team that is of equal or higher athletic ability, we are almost a lock to lose. That has to change. It has to change quickly. The program has used the excuse of “need more birthdays” way too long. It’s time to step up. We got blown out at home against a team that didn’t seem particularly old and experienced. They also didn’t strike me as that much more talented, if at all. They wanted it more.
I would love to have more SD kids on the roster. You are out of your mind if you think the coaches are not trying hard to make that happen. They are currently behind NDSU and SDSU for local talent (there are exceptions of course but they are getting first dibs). Those schools have earned it through results. It’s up to our program to go out there and earn it. Don’t think however that kids from other states for some reason care less than South Dakota kids. I was from another state and it has not been my experience that South Dakota kids cared more. Did Chris Streveler, Stephan Logan, Tom Compton, Tyler Starr, Darren Greenfield, Noah Sheperd, and Ko Quaye, look like they were any less invested in performing at their absolute best because they didn’t happen to be born in South Dakota?
Being disciplined and playing with maximum effort takes zero ability and is controllable. It is the expectation I have for the program win or lose. We have not seen that and things will not change unless that becomes the default setting for every member of the team 24 hours a day- 365 days a year - obsession with doing the right thing to be the best.
We still have half the conference season left. There is still time for the program to show us that discipline and effort. I hope to see it, but I am not frankly betting on it. Prove me wrong Yotes!

Now that was an excellent post!!! Well said and spot on. Leaders need to lead and players need to play with passion and coaches need to put them in situations to be successful. Signs of a good team. Talent is definitely there, no doubt.

OBC nailed it. I cringed during Gameday when Tom Rinaldi announced that SDSU was "the best football team in South Dakota." The truth hurts and, at this time, it is hard to argue with that statement.
The biggest rivalry in the Valley and FCS right now is NDSU v. SDSU. As Stig said, they created the Dakota Marker rivalry in 2004 because each school "needed each other." The result is State seems to give NDSU their best shot and sometimes pulls it off and their fans love it and the players on both sides get amped up. All for a 75lb replica survey marker and bragging rights. The all-time series between NDSU and SDSU after Saturday is now 63-42-5. The all time series before our final game with State this year is 55-52-7 with SDSU having the current edge. This is with USD only beating State something like 3 times since 1990. The status quo can, does, and will shift. But, it won't shift in USD's favor until and unless something changes.
Since our move to D-1, I have attended nearly every signing day party and followed nearly every verbal commitment on our first fan board and now this one, watched more hudl film than a non-coach should, and thought "this is the season" as much as anyone. I have invested in the Howling Pack, served on its board as a member and a former President, purchased season tickets, skipped out on invitations to hunt and attend family functions, screamed until I lost my voice until Tuesday, tailgated in rain and snow, all to support a team that I never played for, but will support and love the rest of my life. My wardrobe is Coyote red and while I don't pull a Jackrabbit and turn my family of 5 loose on Sunday at church in our best game day attire, we wear our USD gear with pride.
My two cent observation at this time is this: The athleticism and desire to win has been there for years. Financial support from our athletic department and fans has been there for years. The "extras" and "amenities" a successful program needs to recruit have been there and only get better every year. Soon, they will be second to none with the completion of the Dakota Dome renovations. The discipline and focus needed to succeed however, are consistently not there. Look no further than needless penalties, self-induced mistakes, and momentary lacks in judgment that have cost us wins. Time. And Time. Again.
During Gameday, Stig noted that each new player in the program gets a "MAD" Manual. It stands for Make A Difference. It details the culture of State, presumably everything from "flannel Friday" to "muscle milk Wednesday" at the Dairy Barn, to "how to cramp like champ." It outlines expectations of players and explains what it means to be a part of that team. The rationale? It outlines the culture of their program and how each player can make a difference for the bunnies and help their team win. His point in doing so is that no one guy can do it all, but each guy can do something to make a difference.
I hate to admit it, but USD lacks that same level of commitment to TEAM over self. We can put "The Strength of the Pack is the Coyote and the Strength of the Coyote is the Pack" on the big screen all we want, but it is all talk until we actually show it. Our basketball teams are doing it, our volleyball team is doing it, our track and cross country teams are doing it. It seems everyone has been doing it, except football. Don't like it? Be the change that makes the difference. We as fans can't do it. It starts on the field and in the locker room. Like a lot of you, I loved sports and played everything I could in high school. Unlike a lot of you, I was average at best, but I loved my team-mates and I loved being a part of something bigger than me. I love USD and am proud to be a small part of a great university and a great athletic tradition. Even if I am just a guy in the stands, I will still do my part and scream like hell, wear red, and support this team. With 4 games to go, I hope to see something that gives me a reason to lose my voice again this season.

But you have come to one conclusion that isn't entirely correct. I have listened to Coach Stig talk about "Make A Difference." In fact, I had the privilege of discussing it with him over dinner a few years ago. He isn't necessarily talking about football.
