We have won 1 of our last 9 games, of which 5 of those games were in the Dome. The one win was 17-12 over Western Illinois. I'm not sure much else needs to be said. One win against a failing institution (whose coach we stole). Simply not a competitive team and it's telling how few people are on here standing up for the staff. This is the low point of the D1 era this far.

The whole thing just makes no sense. I don’t think Simmons is that great and he drives me a little nuts at times, but 52 should be enough to win a game. The defense is just amazingly bad right now, and the special teams are a mess too. I don’t understand what is happening.

The new defensive coordinator has implemented a scheme so bad that it's basically impossible for our guys to stop any given play. It worked at NAIA where your team might have overwhelming speed, but clearly does not work whatsoever at this level. That's my best guess as to what is happening. How Bob didn't see this coming is beyond me.

My guess is nothing drastic until the bye. I’m guessing Bob didn’t forget how to coach, but some of the position coaches are definitely struggling. Even if he were to fire DC TJ. How hard is it going to be to get someone else to take the job? The assistant coaches are all on 1 year deals so their only security is a job well done. But lots of turnover in staff isn’t great for recruiting....but neither is a performance like this week. We’ve got our hands full with this mess.

Something else that really screwed us over and pissed me off Saturday. Kai Henry taking a penalty after he scores. We can’t KO for a touchback, so then they get a return deep into our territory that leads to points. Henry should’ve had his ass benched right then.
Then we waste a timeout because we’ve got only 10 guys in punt return formation. Then later we blow gain on first down because someone wasn’t lined up properly. Then we also burned another timeout in the second half on a third down. Crowd is in full throat after two decent plays and Sega calls TO and then we come out and give up an easy first down. We just look lost out there. Don’t get me started on not being able to rush it for 6 inches at the goal line.

There are problems aplenty but I would look at one major factor that has been going on for some time. I have said it before and I will say it again, the OL coach needs to go. They are being coached to be pass blockers and pass blockers only. All of the real road graders have left the program because of the coach and his philosophy. That is why we can't score from the 6" line! This coach doesn't believe in coaching during the game and his negative attitude and posturing has turned the team culture toxic. Watch him during the game. He doesn't talk to his players! What kind of a coach does that?! Time to get rid of this guy and build a winning culture. As far as the DC - I would say that we need to give him some time to figure out how to adapt his philosophy to our opponents. He brought in a pretty extreme change to our D and before we pull the plug on him, lets give him more than 3 games to prove himself. Couldn't agree more about players getting penalties for showboating - bench them until they learn a little class.

I'm going to argue that we don't really have the athletes or experience at the OL to really be effective at this point. I don't have a problem with the way he is coaching.

How Bob didn't see this coming is beyond me. I agree. I thought this was supposed to be a defense that could quickly adapt/change in game? It turned out to be the opposite Saturday. The longer the game went on, the more HBU picked our secondary apart. Our outside cornerbacks gave the same 8-10 yard cushion on 1st and 2nd down all day long. That's a layup for any team at this level. Maybe NAIA QBS cant make the long 8-10 yard out throw but every mediocre QB in FCS can make that throw if you give him time and that amount of space. Not to mention we continuously gave up the middle of the field as well. We heard all Fall how this defense was supposed to confuse people with the blitz packages and different looks at the line of scrimmage, but so far all I have seen is 2 interior lineman and 2 undersized DE's lining up at the line of scrimmage every play. We get no pressure and we cannot cover the short to intermediate passing game. If there is more to this scheme that what we have seen, it is time to let it all loose and stop worrying about not throwing too much at our defensive unit at once.

Do we only pass block as a function of the system or is it the coaching? We are soooo pass happy. I honestly don’t know but it isn’t good either way. I’ve also been suspect of lack of adjustments by OL coach in game. Lots of “we’ll get em next series.”

Opponent coaches are picking our defense apart! When you see multiple plays where there is not one defensive player anywhere near the opponent , we got a problem! Hopefully TJ is not egotistical and scraps this defensive scheme. It would be an improvement to let the corners press bale and play a cover 2. Cover 2 works especially is our starting secondary is out there.

I waited a couple of days before coming here, call it a cooling off period. Thing is, I'm not even angry. I'm like a lot of people I spoke with in the parking lot after the game, complete apathy is setting in. I'm to the point where I really don't care anymore, I can barely stand to watch this team play.
Let's start first with the offense. I hate this offense. It is entirely based on motion, misdirection, and passing the ball every freaking play. We don't run the ball, at all. 537 yards passing, 95 yards rushing. That says everything. We can put up yards through the air and score points, but did you ever feel like our offense is in control of the game? I don't. We don't play to control the line of scrimmage. We don't play a tough, physical brand of football on offense. We play finesse football and we are soft. Plain and simple, that is our identity, and that identity permeates through the entire team and trickles through to our defense and special teams. No better indication of this than 6 inches from the goal line and we have to loft 50/50 jump passes to a receiver in order to score. Pathetic. Yards and points are one thing but sometimes you need to have an offense that has an identity, that shows up and knows it is going to take control of the game. Thing is, some of you will blame this on the offensive line, I don't. The play calling does not help them at all. You know how hard it is to pass pro every freaking play and then get asked every once in a while to get off the ball, get downhill, and road grate some guys? Our play calling does this unit no favors, they get in no rhythm and I can't blame them too much. Sure, the offense put up a lot of points against HBU, but it's going to get shut down in conference.
Onto the defense. It's terrible. Really bad. Major changes need to be made to whatever scheme we are running because whatever we are doing is not working. Simple as that. We are soft as a baby's bottom on this side of the ball too. I'm not even going to get into all the problems with this unit because I would end up writing a book. It starts with the DC and this crappy defensive scheme. Change everything, now, because whatever we do it can't be any worse than what's happening now.
Special teams. It takes a special kind of crazy to run down full speed on kick coverage. We don't do it very well, obviously. There needs to be a lot of work done here starting with a change-up of personnel. I am not pointing the finger at any one person on the coverage unit, I'm just saying that we might need to get some new blood in there and find out who wants to run down that field and make a tackle. Special teams mistakes like only having 10 guys on the field are another indication of where this team is at mentally. Not sharp, not into the game, mentally weak.
The players. Most of us here follow recruiting and would say that the last several years we are getting some pretty good players here at USD. I don't think what we are seeing is because we lack talented football players. I think it is 100% on coaching, scheme, and the identity and tone the coaches are passing on to this team. I remember Bob's WIU teams and they were hard nosed, physical, run the fullback type of offenses. What we are seeing on offense right now is the complete opposite of that. And those WIU teams also played physical defense. We don't
Like I started off with, apathy and hopelessness is setting in. We're not dumb, we see all the resources being thrown at this football program, and after everything the administration has committed this is the result. Terrible. Every other sports program at USD is doing really well. That point was highlighted later Saturday night when the volleyball team beat Iowa. Why don't we see similar results with this football program? Right now, I don't think we win a game this year. Oh we'll probably run into one or two wins as there seems to be some other hot garbage programs in the conference this year, but playing like we are right now we won't win a game. NDSU, SDSU, UNI, they are going to murder USD. It's going to be ugly.

Other than a few easy-to-ID posters, this isn't a board that gets on the coaches too much, so all of these comments are noteworthy. We know what over-matched Yote teams look like - this isn't one of them. Side note: I happen to be listening to an old Lou Holtz book. His first game as DB coach at OSU his unit gave up a NCAA record amount of passing yards to SMU. He turned out OK.

One thing I would add re: special teams - we have got to fix the actual kick on the kickoff. If we aren't going/able to kick out of the end zone, then kick it higher to get the coverage team some extra time. We are kicking too low/flat and the ball is getting to the other end too early. It makes bad coverage habits look even worse.
As frustrated as I was with the defense, I was more upset with special teams. At least the DBs could use the injury excuse with Collins, Tisdale and Goodson - not that this clears them of all wrong doing...
