Our defense is not utilizing its strengths. We have a tremendous amount of skill, experience, and depth on the DL. They aren't rotating to keep them fresh. They aren't able to put any pressure on QB. Opponents have no need to run with the soft middle and no blitz, but when HBU did run up the middle they got more yards than they should have. Interior DL trying to tap out but they leave them on the field. 5-6 guys been getting it done for 2-3 years. It's difficult to watch what has been happening knowing that the amount defensive talent, depth, and experience that is hanging out on the sidelines. The DL should be setting the tone. This scheme does not give them that option.

Apathy is just what you want in the middle of a major project. Sigh.
I also noticed the very little substituting going on in the DL. Moose was constantly rotating so they could go all out for 2 plays then rotate.
If we aren’t going to let Klett play at RB, put him back at LB. We could use someone with some size & speed to be a thumper in the middle.

I just don't know where we go from here, honestly. This is the first time since I graduated that I really don't care anymore. I am looking at my plans for next weekend already and this is the first time I don't really care if I watch the game. I'll check in once in a while I guess, but I won't be sitting down to watch my favorite team. And that's a shame. Apathy has set in.
Realistically, we're not going to make any coaching changes mid season at any position. Who would you go get right now anyway? And Bob is here for another 5 years. Other than this year, I've actually liked what Bob has done here. But this is a testament to the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. We went from having an all star staff to having a disaster in about 2 years. So what is the solution?

Plain and Simple, if you score 52 points in a game, you should win!! The issues aren't necessarily with the offensive scheme because over 1/2 of the passes that are thrown are actually called runs, but the QB pulls out of it and takes what the defense is giving them (RPOs). All the short hitches and outs are just perimeter runs if you think about it. The issue is the basic structure and implementation of the defensive scheme. It is the same scheme or very similar to the tite front Iowa State is running in the pass happy Big 12. The issue is we are a much better 4 down front team because of the lack of size at the defensive end spot (terrific players) but not big, sturdy, thick guys that don't get distorted when large offensive linemen lean on them. If you play a 3 down front, the nose guard must be a dude and the end must be thick and strong. As you saw in the game, any pressure we put on the QB came out of a 4 down look. As I have stated before, some simple but tough conversations between DC and head coach need to be had in order to right the ship. As far as special teams goes, get the guys off the field that are just looking to shark and head hunt people not looking (no names) and get guys on the field that want to make tackles. It's all technique and speed!!

Sorry to bump this thread, but HBU is on its way to 4-1 and Zappe (their QB) has 496 yards and 7 TD's with 8 MINUTES LEFT IN THE 3RD QUARTER. They have 65 points right now.
He (and their entire offense) is obviously MUCH better than any of us ever expected.

Aside from UTEP's win over HBU their opponents are 1-18 (the 1 being our win over Northern Colorado).

Northern Colorado beat Idaho today who last week smoked perennial power Eastern Washington. Crazy. This might be a year where it's truly a free-for-all for the championship.
