I live in Des Moines and listen to the local sports station just about every day 1460 KXNO. Every thursday they speak to Mark Farley from UNI. This podcast will tell you a lot about why USD gets so many Iowa players on their roster. Has a lot to do with the tuition of USD and the fact they offer in state tuition to Iowa students. The interview starts at about 00:15:00. I know Farley can be bitter and look down upon USD, but he is speaking a little truth regarding USD pulling players away from UNI. www.iheart.com/podcast/487-kxno-the-morning-rush-28237133/episode/coach-mark-farley-and-beer-with-51307448/

Does a every MVFC school get a certain amount of dollars, or do they get the amount of what their school cost is times the 63 scholarships? Example, do all teams get $1.5M or do they get their normal cost times the 63 scholarships. School A could have a cost of $30k per year for a total of $1.89M and school B could have a cost of $20k per year for a total of $1.26M. Also, how does COA work? If a kid is on 80% scholarship, does he get full COA or does he get 80%? That makes a huge difference in the point Farley is pointing out.

Farley is making excuses for Iowa kids going to elsewhere, this was happening before in-state tuition and full cost of attendance was put into place. The numbers have not changed drastically...he's a douche and kids just don't want to play for him.

Has he adjusted at all to the Dakotas joining the fray? What made you successful in 2005 probably doesn't apply today.

UNI is notorious for not recruiting in-state kids hard early in the process and then coming in at the last minute to try and pluck them at the 11th hour with an offer or after they have committed to another school. Sometimes it works and sometimes those kids stay with their commitment. They don’t value the best kids in the state of Iowa and when their offers don’t pan out, they then move to the in-state kids.

Didn't listen to the interview but is some of his beef South Dakota offering in-state tuition to Iowa residents?
First, it is a fantastic idea for South Dakota to offer in-state to Iowa kids. It makes going to school in SD a great educational value for those kids.
Second, SD experiences brain drain like other Midwest states do. Bringing students into the state increases the pool of educated young adults that feed the cities in this state, Sioux Falls in particular.
You want economic growth, this is a small price to pay for an educated workforce. I applaud SD for doing this. South Dakota thinking outside the box to increase educated people for the workforce, I like it. I work in Iowa and know a lot of people in that state and USD (and SDSU) have jumped to the top of the list for a lot of high schoolers as a result.
From an athletic dept. perspective, it lowers the amount of real dollars needed to raise for scholarship money for prospective Iowa athletes. I also heard SD is now offering the same thing for Nebraska residents.
It's one of the best ideas the State has come up with for feeding the growth of the Universities here. If it works financially, do it. Both the schools and the students benefit.

You only have to listen to about 4 minutes of the interview. But he basically said because the Dakota schools offer reciprocity, they can afford to be more aggressive with out of state kids. Farley basically said he has a budget he cannot exceed. So his scholarship limit is 63 but he might use up his budget before he gets to 63. And the Dakota schools can use their budgets to offer COA because they spend less in tuition scholarships.

He can give 63 scholarships of out of state players if he can afford it. But if you listen to the clip, he cannot afford that.

The three wins: 2018 vs WIU 2017 at Nicholls (playoffs) 2015 vs SIU Before that you've got to go back to a win over Missouri S&T in 2011 (Meierkort's last season).

Kids from SD (and localized out of state kids, close to home) do matter. They create a sense of community. SDSU has a community, USD does not. When local kids are on the roster and play periodically, they don’t have to all play all the time, but play some, people come watch them and there are people in the stands. Kids from all over are great, they are young men who are great, but a kid from Florida brings in Mom and Dad for a couple of games. There are a few parents that get her as much as they can, but that’s it, the extension is not there. Local kids bring in Mom and Dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, moms friends, dads friends, sisters friends, girlfriends parents and their friends and relatives. There is a network of community that develops. SDSU has perfected this community network, they get it...we do not. After a community is developed, the community will last through winning and not so winning seasons.
