I was curious about why ORU's women's team had been under-performing so far. Apparently their star guard, Maya Mayberry, hasn't been playing for a reason that hasn't been disclosed to the public. Could be medical or personal reasons, who knows? One of the posters at the ORU fan board suggested she could be sandbagging in order to have an extra season playing with her younger sister, who will be on campus next year. I sincerely hope that is not the reason. Selfish, if true. Her father is an assistant coach there, so I'm sure whatever the reason is, it is endorsed by the staff. Jentry Holt, a 6'-3" grad transfer Center from Oklahoma State, has also not been playing. I don't know what the reason was there either, but her absence was likely felt in their lackluster non-conference showing. She did finally play at their most recent game vs. Rogers State. Her stat line looks good: 11 points/ 4 reb/ 1 asst/ 0 TO/ 1 steal/ 1 block 5/7 FG (71.4%) I think that if Mayberry doesn't come back that will be a big loss, but they have a number of good shooting guards to fill in. Holt could be a game-changer for them, as Sjerven is for us. Don't sleep on them, but I'm not as bullish on them pulling big upsets this year without Mayberry. They play tonight at Frost, so I guess we will find out what they look like with Holt in a hurry. Holt could be the real thing, but she should be a stud playing 2-11 DII Rogers St. The school(OSU) she left just hammered ORU 78-44. The last big that transferred to ORU was 6'7" McIntyre who was a load, but she did not translate to big wins for conference or post season. ORU appears to be rebounding better and Holt will reinforce that stat.

I watched some of the State game tonight. They rolled oral Roberts. Noah Freidel looked pretty damn good again tonight. Man we could sure use his shooting this year. So frustrating.

Not sure I share those feelings. We have shooters who are also good on-ball defenders, what we are currently lacking is a cohesive process for getting good shots. (Not to mention, we would still play through Simpson/Umude/Hags.) It is probably noteworthy that Kelly's shooting has dropped since Simpson was out.
It will be fun to see how AJ vs. Feidel plays out the next few years though.

If we lose at home to Denver on Sunday, it may be time to start showing concern. Long season still ahead of us, but I don't think any of us thought we would be bottom feeders after two games into conference play while on a four game losing streak. I still believe that when Simpson is back to full game strength, we will look like a totally different team. And as the bunny fans like to remind us, the only games that matter are the SL tournament games.

Here's a multi-part stats analysis of Summit League WBB teams. I'll look at teams that are ranked in the top-100 and bottom 100 (#250+) of various stats... Scoring Offense Team | Rank | PPG | USD | 11 | 81.9 | Den | 31 | 77.3 | UND | 45 | 74.6 | WIU | 57 | 73.4 |
Scoring Margin Team | Rank | Margin | USD | 21 | +19.8 | UND | 70 | +10.4 | SDSU | 85 | +8.6 | ----- | --- | --- | WIU | 250 | -4.4 | PFW | 291 | -8.5 |
Scoring Defense Team | Rank | PPG | SDSU | 48 | 57.8 | --- | --- | --- | ORU | 269 | 68.9 | NDSU | 285 | 69.9 | Den | 337 | 77.0 | WIU | 339 | 77.8 |
Impressive offense for USD, given the tough schedule. Impressive defense for SDSU, given the schedule. UND will be the team to look out for as an upset threat, I'm sure.

(WBB ball control stats) Rebound Margin Team | Rank | Margin | UND | 42 | +7.4 | USD | 68 | +5.7 | SDSU | 80 | +4.6 | UNO | 85 | +4.5 | --- | --- | --- | PFW | 317 | -7.0 | WIU | 341 | -10.1
|
Turnover Margin Team | Rank | Margin | USD | 30 | +5.13 | WIU | 48 | +4.00 | --- | --- | --- | ORU | 250 | -0.67 | UNO | 331 | -5.00 |
Assist-Turnover Ratio Team | Rank | ATOR | USD | 13 | 1.33 | SDSU | 46 | 1.11 | --- | --- | --- | PFW | 315 | 0.55 |
I like the looks of our ball control, but we will probably be in rock-fights again with UND and SDSU to control the glass. SDSU is still a great ball-control team, despite their flaws this year. Probably a lot of credit to Cascio-Jensen, their PG that handles the ball a lot.

(WBB fouling/FT stats) Personal Fouls/Game Team | Rank | PF | SDSU | 17 | 13.9 | UNO | 86 | 15.8 | --- | --- | --- | UND | 274 | 18.9 | NDSU | 275 | 19.0 |
Total FT Attempts Team | Rank | FTA | WIU | 1 | 376 | Den | 7 | 348 | SDSU | 25 | 297 | UND | 34 | 286 | USD | 66 | 268 | ORU | 78 | 263 | --- | --- | --- | UNO | 270 | 202 | PFW | 283 | 196 |
Free Throw % Team | Rank | % | Den | 14 | 77.0 | USD | 36 | 75.0 | ORU | 37 | 74.9 | PFW | 50 | 74.0 | --- | --- | --- | SDSU | 273 | 64.0 | WIU | 307 | 61.4 |
The big surprise here, of couse, is State's struggles from the stripe. I don't know what is going on there, but they DID just shoot 90% in a recent game, so.... who knows. They are really good at playing smart to avoid fouls, so that will be a challenge playing them. UND isn't fouling and drawing fouls quite as proficiently as last year, but they should still put our shooters to the charity stripe a lot, and that slightly favors us. As long as we don't get out-muscled on the glass.

A couple of interesting WBB games tonight. On MidcoSN you can watch Omaha @ UND. Not sure if that one is also on ESPN3 or not. Might also be on FS North. SDSU @ Denver will be probably the bigger game, but is on a pay-stream from the Denver site.

I'm really interested to see how DU comes out tonight after the shellacking in Vermillion Sunday. SDSU certainly must feel like they were given a blueprint on how to defend/rebound against DU, so if it is tough sledding for the Pios early, will they just fold? Or will they be able to make it a game played fast and get the scores in the 80s - which will be in their favor.

The way Denver plays, it's hard to predict the outcome. They could be hitting really well from the arc, and suddenly you are buried. We put specific players on Denver's two excellent senior players, and picked apart their tendencies. That seemed to work pretty well. Loven didn't even shoot many arc shots at all. I have no idea what State's strategy will be, though. They have a great defense, but I haven't watched them enough to know why they are good.

ORU men beat the Bison 79-73. Welcome to the Men's 2020 Summit League, where dominance is relative. 3 or 4 games in, and only Omaha is left undefeated.

for WBB: WIU over PFW 79-68 UND over UNO 63-57 SDSU over Denver 86-79
Just based on score and stats, Denver was right there with State the whole game, neck-and-neck. It was a shootout, like Denver likes to get into. Nelson and Loven got their points, but really the story of the game seems to be in the paint, bigs vs bigs.
State's high scorers: Paiton Burckhard (24) and Megan Bultsma (24). For Denver it was Ezeudu (17) and Nelson (16).
State shot above average: 49%FG, 35%3P, 75%FT Denver was below average: 38%FG, 31%3P, 86%FT
So State really affected Denver in the paint, it appears. And they had a good night shooting.

The Omaha 6-point loss in Grand Forks was interesting.
Mariah Murdie, their Sophomore Center, had 16 points, 10 rebounds, a steal and 3 Blocks, while shooting 7-13(54%) and only committing 2 fouls!
The team as a whole was less productive, though. They shot 33%FG, 21%3P, 91%FT. They don't draw enough fouls (11 FT attempts) for that 91% number to be effective.
They forced 21 Turnovers, while committing 21. They were outrebounded, but only by three. That's actually impressive vs the F-Hawks. The Mavs just can't seem to find an offense. Other than that, they aren't terrible, and should get more than two conference wins this year.
I'll go out on a limb and say they will go 7-9, one shy of Lange's best season. 6-seed in the tournament.
