Wow. Apparently you're one of the lucky ones to have been untouched by it...so far.

These last few posts kind of sum up why I'm having a hard time enjoying sports this year. I don't think anyone should be playing unless it's a bubble environment.

I can't quite figure out why we have to find out this information from Twitter vs. our athletic department?? I'm referencing the schedule aspects and not the details of quarantine, etc. USD announced a game against Nebraska today and the folks in Lincoln have yet to officially acknowledge it. Nothing is conventional right now. Nebraska notified USD today that there will be no fans, including parents, allowed at this game. While it is disappointing, our goal of keeping our student athletes healthy and safe is more of a priority. I want there to be a conference season, so if this means no attendance at the non-con games...so be it.

Yotes vs Colorado is on ESPN+ at 7 PM. Don't see anything for the Drake game. Yotes at Huskers is on BTN at 8.

I want there to be a conference season, so if this means no attendance at the non-con games...so be it. I'm not lashing out at you specifically in this post, but the "keeping students healthy" got me going: If keeping students safe from infection was the priority they wouldn't be on campus. Student health isn't the problem, given that most will recover from Covid without issue. It's the surrounding community that suffers. I pray my grandparents and extensive family living in Vermillion stay healthy. USD isn't unique in welcoming students to campus this fall. There are bills to be paid and no one is going to step in and pay them if enrollment cratered. The systems above USD left no choice. It's a failure at every level that we've come to this. I stand firmly in the camp that colleges across the country should have gone online only and abandoned athletics. Instead we've got haphazard hybrid courses and farces for the collegiate competitions. Also people die because we had these things. Somehow that's an afterthought for everyone. Times of crisis call for sacrifice, doesn't matter what your personal situation is. I would have been upset if my college years were interrupted with this, but think about the other generations who were sent to war when they should have been awkwardly finding adulthood in the north complex like some of us did. My thoughts are probably unpopular. I don't care. It makes no sense to try and have a season right now. The contests will not seem entirely legitimate and people will die. How about we wait a bit longer?

Life is not without risk. Shutting down 100% of the country when just 3.6% have tested positive for a virus with a 99%+ recovery rate for most age groups, is a huge ask. More than 167,000 people die of random ACCIDENTS each year. Imagine if those numbers were reported on a daily basis and we were told to stay home and avoid all risks. As the parent of a college student, I fear far more my child driving across the state than contracting covid. My parents are in their 70's and have taken steps to minimize their risk, but they've said they don't know how much time they have left and don't want to waste away in their basement. Honestly, my interactions with their age group has shown me they fear it far less than the middle age Facebook generation. Stay well everyone!

I think we could have had a relatively normal life this year if everyone in this country would have agreed to some basic and effective measures. Instead we've got a large portion of the population actively opposing any sort of measures and it has exacerbated this crisis and will prolong it way longer than it ever should have had to go on. I'm not afraid of catching Covid, but I respect anyone else's wishes to not catch an infectious disease and that shouldn't be so hard for everyone to agree on.

Anyways, ESPN tells me that the season starts on Wednesday. That really snuck up on me. Any predictions for the season? What's the starting lineup? Where do we finish in the conference? Do we know how many people have to be positive/quarantined to cancel a game?

I’m excited to see all the newcomers, and see who rises to the occasion, whatever that’s worth.

Based on nothing other than hope and a prayer, I'll go out on a limb and boldly predict good things from Nikola Zizic. Maybe I just like the name. Or maybe I like the fact he and Heiman give us a pair of 6'11" guys who, hopefully, can own the paint.

Though I'm pretty sure Umude will start. Outside of that though... My guess is that we will see some pretty inconsistent play through January as everyone gets used to playing with each other and (hopefully) some practice. On paper, this team should be deeper and more athletic than the teams we have seen recently, so they should be fun to watch.
My personal open question going in is how Coach Lee will handle it. You can't be a free-flowing, athletic team when the coach is angry and shouting at everything that happens - the players eventually become tentative and play scared.

Didn’t they say during media day that AJ was starting PG?

I’m also in the camp watching to see how Coach Lee does this year both on the side coaching during games, and overall with the new players. I’m not 100% sold on him and his coaching abilities yet. His first year was rough due to injuries so I’ll give him credit, but last year was year two with a decent roster, and the players more adjusted and we still made yet another early exit in Sioux Falls.

Valid criticism. We severely underachieved last season. I believe the gpa has improved immensely under Lee, but the success on the court hasn’t materialized yet. Last season started so well winning the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii, but it didn’t finish strong. This was supposed to be his final year of the original 3 year contract, but I have heard a new 3 year deal that starts this year may have been executed over the summer.
