I wonder if this game will get any interest from national sportswriters? They deserve to be, but I guess I won’t hold my breath.

Looking at that stat comparison, we are clearly the better ball-control team and the better offense. They shoot better from the stripe, and have the better perimeter defense, but our interior defense is better.
They have had some issues with arc-shooting, so that's actually a good matchup for us. We maybe can shut down the lane to some extent? Maybe throw some zone in the mix?
It didn't make the chart, but we foul more than they do, as well. So their good FT shooting will be a factor. They will no doubt try their hardest to get Sjerven in foul trouble.

It’s gonna be a fascinating matchup of two great teams and staffs.
I’d imagine Irwin will be tasked with the majority of trying to hound Lamb but who knows. Do they essentially face guard her? And if they do what does that mean for the other four Yotes on the floor in terms of driving lanes and lack of backside help? Can State’s big rotation deal with Sjerven? Or does she dominate? How does the U guard Selland? Can they match up with her with anybody one on one? How does Korngable play in her first State-U game as a primary scouting report focus? Whose youngsters and role players make a few plays?
Two great defensive teams with great coaches. Can’t imagine anybody runs away with this one. Seems like the typical State-U game where it really is one make or miss here and there that will decide it.

Or do the Jacks put Irwin on Korngable and let Theuninck or Greer be the face in the chest all over the floor person on Lamb? I’m so interested to see how both teams approach the first game and then the adjustments for Round 2. It’s gonna be fun to watch.

I’m so interested to see how both teams approach the first game and then the adjustments for Round 2. It’s gonna be fun to watch. Good question. It would seem that SDSU's style would be to not focus too much on any player, and instead focus on help defense/double teams on the post (Sjerven and Ugofsky). Although that is how they have played historically, that seems like a potential disaster on paper, so I can't see that. But I can't see a situation where they don't quickly double/deny Sjerven. I wonder if they might put Irwin on Krull to disrupt the flow of the offense and use the senior-vs-freshman matchup in their favor? The thing I'm most nervous about is that 50 fouls are called and the game is ugly. (I think that favors USD, but I want fun, exciting games.)

Who knows. Heck, they might play zone. I’m not going to be surprised by much from either team here. There’s a lot of pick your poison scenarios both ways.

AJ does love to go zone out of timeouts to change momentum and mess with the play you just drew up.

FWIW, here is what The Athletic writer said in a chat that included some mid-major questions. The point about maybe not having conference tourneys is a good one, but I don't have her optimism about mid-majors getting more bids...
Chantel Jennings Feb 1, 5:18pm @dan H. Tournament selection this year is going to be fascinating because no one knows what's going to happen. The NCAA is intent on having a full tournament and they've specifically loosened the rules to get more and more teams qualified (specifically, teams *don't* need to have .500 records). So, I think we could see more mid-majors in the tournament this season than in other years simply because of how this season is unfolding. Does that mean Missouri Valley becomes the first mid-major group to get more than one big? My vote would be on the Summitt but we'll see!
This regular season South Dakota-South Dakota State match up is a big one, specifically because I don't think teams across the country can bank on anything this season — including conference tournaments. Everything is just changing so quickly. That said, I also believe (and I answered this in an earlier question) we could see more mid-majors in the tournament this year than in other years, so we'll have to see what their resumes look like come mid-March.

Who do you think the Yotes put on Selland? The obvious ones aren't playing (Watson & Arens). As a strategy, I see value in putting Lamb on her an letting those two kind of cancel each other out, then let Sjerven and Korngable and the rest go against SDSU's 2nd tier. But as a fan, I want Lamb and Selland to have big games, not spend all their energy/focus chasing each other around.

I would guess Korngable guards Selland first, but we shall see.

And then there's Burckhard and Irwin. Those two are having good seasons as well in terms of scoring, and both can be lockdown defenders.
Sjerven's improved ability to stay out of foul trouble and her great FT% will be tested in this game.
I agree that the individual matchups and adjustments through the game will be a fun chess match to watch.
Coach P vs. A.J. 7-4 overall 4-0 at SCSC 2-2 at Frost 1-2 in SLT

Seems to me that you’ve gotta start Ugofsky on Selland. I just don’t think Korngable or Lamb are big enough.
