FWIW, here is what The Athletic writer said in a chat that included some mid-major questions. The point about maybe not having conference tourneys is a good one, but I don't have her optimism about mid-majors getting more bids... Chantel Jennings Feb 1, 5:18pm @dan H. Tournament selection this year is going to be fascinating because no one knows what's going to happen. The NCAA is intent on having a full tournament and they've specifically loosened the rules to get more and more teams qualified (specifically, teams *don't* need to have .500 records). So, I think we could see more mid-majors in the tournament this season than in other years simply because of how this season is unfolding. Does that mean Missouri Valley becomes the first mid-major group to get more than one big? My vote would be on the Summitt but we'll see! This regular season South Dakota-South Dakota State match up is a big one, specifically because I don't think teams across the country can bank on anything this season — including conference tournaments. Everything is just changing so quickly. That said, I also believe (and I answered this in an earlier question) we could see more mid-majors in the tournament this year than in other years, so we'll have to see what their resumes look like come mid-March. I think allowing teams with sub .500 records (that don't win their conference) will not help Mid Major teams. I can see the committee considering a 8th or 9th Big Ten team, a game or two under .500, bumping out a deserving Mid Major because they have a couple good conference wins.

anchor.fm/nla"Nobody's Listening Anyway" podcast discusses the women's game at the 44 minute mark. Zimmer's take: (paraphrased)- Jacks have the better resume with ranking and non-con wins, but USD looks like the better team. - Jacks shooting hasn't been very good, but Selland has been the best all-around player in the league. Irwin is better, Burckhard is still good. - If USD can lock down the interior, and the Jacks can't make their arc shots, USD will win both games. - But, last year USD had an even bigger advantage, but the Jacks still competed well in the championship game. So can't count them out. - I expect a split this weekend.

Game Day, folks.

My general prediction for Game 1: Yotes maintain a small lead for much of the first half, then the Jacks make adjustments and roar back in the 3rd Q. Some key Yotes get in foul trouble in the 3rd, too. The 4th Q is back-and-forth, and FT shooting keeps the Jacks in contention, but bad arc shooting dooms them in the end.
Yotes win a thriller. All are entertained. Refs get cursed. Get ready for round 2.
No idea on the XnOs and score details.

As a bonus prediction, I think there will be a bench-clearing brawl instigated by the dirty play and foul-mouth of one Liv Korngable....

Seems to me that you’ve gotta start Ugofsky on Selland. I just don’t think Korngable or Lamb are big enough. But I don’t think Ugofsky is quick enough either.

All are entertained. Refs get cursed. Get ready for round 2. No idea on the XnOs and score details. My story: Yotes jump out to a pretty big lead in Q2 (+20 pts). Jacks stage huge Q3 and make it a game, but their energy was spent on the comeback and fizzle during Q4. I also think in game 1 SDSU is successful in getting Sjerven in foul trouble early, but when USD goes smaller/quicker it creates issues for SDSU's bigger/slower lineup. Bonus prediction: a below average shooter for SDSU rains in 4 or 5 3pters, seemingly out of nowhere, to give SDSU much-needed points. Double Bonus Prediction: Both Watson and Arens are fully healthy and both play 15+ minutes. (OK, that is more 'wishful thinking' than 'prediction'.)

Maybe this weekend will be Aspen Williston's coming-out party. She's an unknown quantity, so we don't know if she can guard Selland, but she's got the size to clog things up in the lane. (Also wishful thinking!)

Seems to me that you’ve gotta start Ugofsky on Selland. I just don’t think Korngable or Lamb are big enough. But I don’t think Ugofsky is quick enough either. I agree. But I just don’t think you can take the chance of two quick ones in the post for either of those two guards. I like Ugofsky’s chances on the perimeter better than the other two on the block. We’ll see. Can’t wait.

I think the wishful thinking on Arens or Watson returning at any point might be way too wishful. I think you’ve got your team as is.

Arens would certainly clarify the guarding Selland issue quite a bit.
