It sucks to lose, especially at the dome, as it makes our road to the playoffs more challenging. But if we get camp back the remaining games are all still very winnable. Take the Bye week get reset focus on Western and then get SDSU at home before the final trip to Fargo.

Honestly, that game could have been much worse. Kudos to the defense for never really breaking outside of the one long run. I hope the team can recoup and keep their eyes forward.

At what point does effective play calling and/or player development outweigh loyalty to an assistant? I just did not understand some of the offensive play calling in the 2nd half. I would sure think the staff would want to take some of the pressure off the back-up QB and run the damn ball.

Lose your QB to an illegal hit and have your whole season derailed.
Fucking fantastic.

Tailgate was half empty. Crowd was half empty and flat. Team was flat. Felt like the bye came a week too late. Bad start, then had them in 3rd & long and they throw up a long lollipop and we have 3 guys on 1 and one of the guys doesn’t look for the ball and gets called for PI and keeps the drive alive and we give up a FG. I have to see the replay, but still not sure how it wasn’t targeting on the hit on Camp. Offense left the defense hanging out to dry too often.
We apparently just cannot have nice things ever.

Clearly our backup QBs don't have the passing game that Camp does. I'm spitballing here but I wonder why we didn't go run heavy after the targeting hit? We had success moving the ball on the ground at times and I bet we could have worn down the D enough to have our way with them in the fourth. Plus, there'd be no game killing INT.

I'm pretty sure you can file this under second guessing, but here goes anyway: First and goal and the game is just there for the taking so what do we do...put the ball in the hands of a freshman taking his first meaningful snaps. Why not rely on our running backs and offensive linemen who have done a great job this season in some key situations? They ate up the 5:53 of clock to end the game against UND, put together a 10 play drive all on the ground against UNI to salt the game away and have been more and more of a team strength as this season develops. Give the ball to Theis and Thomas instead and let them try and pound it home instead of trying to thread the needle on a short field with an inexperienced quarterback. Just my two cents worth which may only be worth about one cent, but I just didn't like the play calling down there at the end. Not down on Stenstrom at all as he was put in a very tough situation.

Very unfortunate situation to put your freshman back up QB in vs a very good defense. Yes, we should have hesitated on putting the game in his hands to win as much. Also, I just was looking after the game, but is it me or have we forgotten over the last 3 games that we had one of the top 4 leading WRs in the Missouri Valley Conference in catches, yardage, and yards per catch after the first 5 games. Bell #14 has now averaged like 6 yards a catch the last three games because all we throw him is tunnel screens and a short one here and there. Why are we not using him, him and Samson #0 are the only ones that get yards after the catch. The middle of the field was open today by the way they were playing. Those are much easier throws for an inexperienced QB than perimeter ones. Interesting?

Sometimes the play call and the execution of the play call don’t align…you are bound to the decisions the players make when they are inside the lines. Pretty easy to call out poor plays after the fact. But i get thats what this site is for.

This is a tough loss to swallow no doubt. It really hurts the playoff resume. Watching the game I don't have a ton of things to be really upset about when it comes to how the Coyotes played and carried themselves. I thought the overall effort was pretty good but this was a case of just having too many bad breaks and having them last just a little too long. If I have one critique maybe it is the start. The Coyotes by starting slow allowed Illinois State to build confidence throughout the game and opened the door for bad breaks and injuries to have too big of an effect on the outcome.
Illinois State had an interception return for a touchdown and a quit hitting long TD run that just went uncovered. Those are two very big and important plays. Despite all the bad breaks in the game the team still had a chance to win but the timing of Camp getting hurt obviously came at a bad time when we really needed Camp out there. If there is one thing we learned is that we know with just about 100% certainly who the starting QB is and should be on this team.
Today I can't really complain about the play calling. What is a team supposed to do when the backup quarterback is in the game and the opponent is gonna be hell bent on making that backup beat them. The Coyotes still attempted to run but you have to take what the defense gives. I really can't thing of anything that stands out as a self inflicted mistake in the game. The Coyotes just lost to a team desperate for a win in a week in the conference where many of the lower teams won. That doesn't make it ok to lose this game but it is hard to be critical and I am still super proud of this team despite the loss. The Coyotes just had bad breaks compile on themselves making the task of a backup QB needing to win a game just too much to rely on.
As far as the targeting rule I am happy that we have a seen a few replay's actually take away some targeting infractions called on the field. I am all for player safety in this dangerous game but I think the targeting rule should only apply if a player leads with the crown of his helmet. I think if a defenders face mask is the first thing to hit an opponent that should not be considered a dirty hit because how can a person tackle reasonably if they can't be allowed any part of their helmet to hit an opponent. That is football. When a player hits with the top of his helmet that is a different story and should be a foul.
At this point I think it comes down to needing to win 2 of the last 3 to get in. If they beat Western Illinois and then either SDSU or NDSU I think that is a resume that gets the Coyotes in. If they lose 2 I just think the number of quality wins is probably too low and they would likely lose most head to head tie breakers vs the teams they are competing against for a spot.
Edit: I just wanted to add a few more comments. Over Most of the last few years I just kind of expect to lose and get over it in about 30 seconds. Today was a bit tougher. It felt more sad and disappointing just because this year is different and this loss today wasn't the way the Coyotes typically lose. They used to just self destruct or hand over wins but I don't feel like that was the case today. I felt more as if just wasn't in the cards today. The stars just didn't line up.

Cf, you nailed it Despite a horrible injury, today was a memorable game. I don’t believe in moral victories but our second string QB almost pulled off the impossible. Today was a classic Valley game. A battle of two heavy weights. We need to realize that valley games are wars of attrition. Our fan base is too use to expecting to lose. We will never be a winning program until we quit expecting to lose.
