Getting swept is not one hell of a showing. It was a good season but is there a such thing as having a very good season but also admitting that the Coyotes played mediocre in the NCAA tournament. If this was considered a great showing then getting swept every tourney should be completely acceptable and as one poster said, it was one hell of a showing. Why can't some people be objective and call it like it is. Take the red goggles off for just one second. This was a good season but not a great showing against Minnesota. Why sugar coat it. That poster was me and I’m telling you ( after reading your posts ) you don’t know shit about volleyball. You run your mouth 24/7 about how you’re such an objective poster and you’re the only one with expectations that are far superior to us dumb shits. You’re honestly a pain in the you know what. If somehow I could fire you as a fan I would. Your posts are nothing more than words to draw attention to you. For the love of God please go be a Jack Fan for life. Please do that as a favor to all of us fans that just accept mediocrity everyday. In fact, you started your own board. Go make post after post after post about how much you know and everyone else on here knows nothing. Scream to the heavens how intelligent you are. I’m done with you and your idiotic posts. You have no clue whatsoever. Just spew and spew.

If you want objectivity, feel free to observe and compare the sport as a whole, rather than make assumptions based on experience in other sports.
Most of the first round matches in the NCAA tournament are sweeps. Denver, for example, has yet to win a set in the first round too, despite many visits. A small percentage of elite teams ever make the sweet 16, elite 8 and final 4. Cinderellas in the basketball sense are relatively rare in volleyball. You tend to see the same teams in the final 4 year after year. I can back this up with data, but I'd rather not waste my time if it's all the same to you.
Part of this is the way the game scores, having to win a "best of" series. The other aspect is the balance of talent/programs. Women's basketball has a little more parity now than in the past, and volleyball might be headed that way with the growth of the sport at the youth level, but right now, the difficulty level to beat a ranked team is fairly high.
The Yotes took a major step forward for both the program and the conference, even without that set win.

I, for one, welcome all the new followers of volleyball, and thank the recent success of the Yotes for the new attention the sport is getting. With the new followers comes a lot of misunderstanding - and a lot of people thinking that what seems appropriate in one sport is also appropriate in another. In fact, go back and watch the Yotes/Gophers game, and you will hear the color guy trying to make analogies to plays/streaks in other sports, and the main announcer NEVER ONCE take the bait. He didn't know better, and he was just trying to relate. CF is just guilty of that here - he is trying to relate to other sports. He is likely used to hearing of a team getting swept in the World Series or NBA finals and connecting it to being a blowout. VB is a different sport, and those connections don't work, including the idea that the playing field between mid-majors and P5 (especially Big Ten) is relatively level. (In reality an average high school team from Iowa would often destroy a pretty good team from SD - SF Christian experiences that every year.) At this point it is still a very top-heavy sport in D1.

#12 Minnesota plays #5 Baylor tomorrow @ 2PM. ESPN or ESPN+, I'm sure. Tune in, if you aren't doing anything else. Would love for the Gophers to pull the upset. BRACKET LINKHere are some observations on the tournament:
Of the 16 seeded top teams, every one of them swept their opponents in round 1. Most were against mid-majors, but Creighton also swept Ole Miss. Seeded teams in round 2 did pretty well, too. 9 won in sweeps, some against power conference foes 3 won in 4 sets, all against power conference foes 2 won in 5 sets, against Dayton and FGCU (this was a big accomplishment) 2 lost to power conference foes (Kansas over #14 Creighton, Illinois over #7 Kentucky) so all-told, the top-16 seeded teams faced mid-major opponents 22 times in the first two rounds. All were defeated. 20 matches were sweeps. 2 matches went to 5 sets. No mid-majors are in the sweet 16. That's pretty typical. The "Cinderella" teams that won two sets each in the second round, Dayton (Big East) and FGCU (ASUN) didn't have to face a seeded team in the first round. #facts

The South Dakota Volleyball post thats on twitter and Facebook today is very impressive....but misleading. I very much endorse the yotes volleyball team but Ive seen an error(s) and feel they need correcting. Only 2 of the 5 in the picture actually was on the team during the first NCAA appearance. 2 others hadnt transferred here yet. and 1 was still in high school. Sami did make it to 3 ncaa tournaments, but not all as a Yote. And im a bit confused about Bollwegs status. She may be graduating this year and i know shes very smart, but shes only had 3 years of college. Wouldnt she be classified as a junior? Heres an interesting tidbit (look it up if you dont believe me) Weeds actually played AGAINST USD her freshman year while at New Hampshire. ( 3 kills and a BA) Who would have guessed while shaking hands under the net with Juergens, Gerdes, and Weideman she would be their teammate a year later. I say she fit in quite well. Jurgs, Gerdes and Lolo were the only ones who actually were on the team at Creighton for the NCAA 4 years ago. Those were pretty impressive statistics that accompanied the photo in the post. just think what they would have been if sami and maddi had been here freshman year plus Bollweg here a 4th year. Plus, to the guy thats been dissing the yotes a bit here. This shows that some of the players actually did not have as much post season experience as was being reported. Ive attended 7 of the 8 ncaa and nivc matches in the last 4 years, i pretty much know whos been on the teams. Now as for next year, yup we are graduating some talent. every team does, every year. But with Lolo taking her covid year we are returning 4 starters. Not a bad place to be sitting......especially looking at who they are. Biggest concern will be at setter position.

Has Jurgens decided for sure that she isn't coming back for her Covid year? I had heard early in the season that she was still on the fence, but she did participate in the senior day activities at the end of this year's regular season.

So I guess I can praise the team most of the season but when I claim they didn't play very well in one game than everyone relishes the opportunity to pile on. People just cherry pick on their merry way forgetting my general opinion of the team.
I never claimed to be a volleyball expert but most reading this thread aren't either.

Coyote Fan, Please relax!!! When you open yourself up and provide an opinion(no matter what side of the fence you are on), one needs to have a little thicker skin when passionate fans come back with their opinions. I have enjoyed reading your two cents worth on topics. I can't say I always agree, but enjoy them none the less. Thank You for contributing to the board!!! Merry Christmas!!!

Also, the Gophs just took down the 5 seed Baylor in 5 sets. So now we can say we played three very competitive sets against an Elite 8 team...

So I guess I can praise the team most of the season but when I claim they didn't play very well in one game than everyone relishes the opportunity to pile on. People just cherry pick on their merry way forgetting my general opinion of the team. I never claimed to be a volleyball expert but most reading this thread aren't either. In essence, you do claim to be a volleyball expert. You make your opinion known that by not winning a set, the girls performance was just ok, nothing special. You’re wrong saying that. Let’s say USD football played Oklahoma State (ranked roughly 12th in the country like Minnesota volleyball is 12th) and say we got beat 31-20. Total yards were OSU 400 and USD 316. Time of possession was OSU 33 and USD 27. Would you say that it was mediocre performance or damn respectable? Any rational fan, knowing the recruiting advantage, money in the two programs, and home field advantage would say that it was more than respectable. It was a great effort. And just to point out your very limited knowledge on volleyball, they play matches…not games. Just sayin I’ve said this many times about you. You go in streaks. Some days you’re all in. Next time you’re anything but that. You make post after post in a way where you walk both sides. You can always go back to your post and say…this is what I said. But if you read it in it’s entirety, if just the opposite result had occurred you could say …this is what I said.. If you would just admit you’re an average fan, then your posts I guess would make more sense. But you do post in a manner where you deem yourself as the “only objective poster” and quite frankly it’s nauseating to many. I agree with annoucerbob. Some of your posts you’ve given thought to. And they are objective. But then you come in from left field with these bizarre and unwarranted comments / statements that everyone just rolls their eyes. Many times you are so critical of these kids and coaches. Good lord, they’re not walking onto the court or field to get their asses handed to them. They’re playing to win. They want to win. Quite frankly you have to come to grips with the fact we don’t have the resources like big time schools do. We have to bus. Big time schools fly. We don’t have training table, they do. We don’t have lots of freebie clothing and shoes, they do. All these things take money. That’s why it’s so imperative that we have strong season ticket sales in football, basketball(s) and volleyball. We don’t even have that. I remember you more than once saying you weren’t gonna buy tickets for football because they didn’t deserve it. That’s your choice, but that also establishes you as a “fair weather” fan. There’s a number of people that buy tickets regardless. We don’t pick and choose. I buy season football, basketball, and volleyball tickets. Every stinking year. Do you? I get many people don’t have the resources to donate, but buying a season ticket or two is not gonna kill ya. Unfortunately you are representative of our overall fan base. Apathetic. I’ll come if they win…maybe. But if they hit a tough stretch, forget it. And to be honest, that’s what separates you from athletes. Athletes keep working. They don’t quit. They understand not everyday is rosy. They pay the price. They don’t walk in the locker room and say….”I don’t think I’ll play today because less than 1000 people are gonna show up”. They play regardless of that. I hate saying this more than anything. But I feel it to be the truth. Until we get more fans, alums, and corporate sponsors committed to backing the Coyotes, we’re going to struggle. If we could change just that, where fan support increases and sponsorship dollars follow, then we have a chance to be elite. Until then, anytime we compete with the big boys and girls on a competitive basis, that’s a credit to our kids and coaches. Going back to the thread topic to close, the match against Minnesota is now even more impressive than it was that night. And I’m sorry to contradict your theory “you’re the only Coyote fan that just doesn’t accept losing”, but at our level, in situations like this, not only do I accept it, but I applaud their effort. I will back USD sports through thick or thin. Good times or bad. And I’ll always buy season tickets. And as much as humanly possible I’ll make the 2 hour drive each way to watch the game or match to support our coaches and athletes. Why? Because they are deserving

Does it really matter what someone considers as playing "good, great, excellent, mediocre, poor etc". It is all subjective so lets just agree to disagree and end this stupid discussion. If anyone wants to continue I would be happy to keep going via PM.

The championship match was a 5-set thriller. Such high-level play on both sides. Both teams deserved to be there. Really entertaining match for any fan of volleyball.
I’m a Husker fan (second to the Coyotes), but that blocking from the Badgers was impenetrable. Badgers were loaded with seniors and super seniors.
The Huskers have top-three ranked recruiting classes stacked up for the next few years. They will have more chances of adding a 6th natty.
Also, we shouldn’t lose Bergen Reilly’s number. With that much talent going to Lincoln, there are bound to be some transfers out for playing time…. Sucks that her sister just transferred to State.

I was routing for the Huskers as well. the Packers ruined if for me and now it is hard to route for anything Wisconsin. The Huskers are Nebraska like no other team belongs to a state. They are by far the team of that State. Many other states have pro teams or whatever. nowledge U is by far the biggest deal there.
