Kody Case enters the transfer portal This is a confusing one for me. If you want to hang it up, that's one thing. But where did he think he'll end up in the portal? I doubt teams are lining up to offer a guy that hasn't been on the field in like 4 years. Unless he's looking to drop down a division or 2. Lol you people are unreal!!! This kid busted his ass for USD and should of left 2 years ago in my opinion. Its a good thing no one is lining up to offer him. His latest of at least 8 and 3 Valley schools have offered. I guess this team must suck un like the almighty USD. Hope the link works. LOL Some times I real think people are just idiots.

The portal is a killer for schools like USD. Bell will be the next one to go if he has an above average year . This is clearly the trend of the portal. Kase was plagued with injury and when he did get in he was given very few targets. So I get that he’s looking for a different opportunity. The WR room is getting thin for USD however.

Leaving USD for Montana State is a lateral move. Both top 20 level playoff schools. Yes, Montana State had more playoff success. USD plays in a much more difficult and competitive conference and finished in the upper half of the conference last season. So yeah, USD is a pretty dang solid FCS school.
No idea why Case is in the portal but he's had a ton of injury issues the last several years and I'm just not sure if he thinks the he needs a fresh start, looking to upgrade, or if just looking for greener grass. I'll be honest in that I don't understand this one but I'm thinking everything will reveal itself eventually.
ETA: Case did take a tremendous risk in entering the portal, from a statistical perspective. There is a thread over on Bisonville (yes, they actually do have some good information over there, some of the best collective coverage of the MVFC that you're going to find) and the stats show that FCS players that enter to portal have a 27% chance of getting a scholarship at any level on the other side of the portal. Half of the FCS players that entered the portal are still there, 1/3 getting a scholarship, 1/9 not getting any financial aid at their new school. Going into the portal is risky for FCS players. It's risky for FBS players.
I've made several posts how it's not always about players thinking they are going to upgrade, sometimes it's their only shot because they are simply done at their current school, buried on depth chart, not in the plans, and encouraged to move on.

Nathan Goering to the portal yesterday. Things are really thin at TE/WR. Need to add a body or 2 via the portal or we are going to need some freshmen to be game ready this Fall.

Didn't hear much about him during fall or spring. It is discouraging seeing a RS Freshman leave the program. Could be buried but there is still so much time to develop and contribute. We have some promising young guys in Galbreath and Bonnin, and 1 TE coming in with the '22 class. That would leave us with 5 TEs on the roster if I counted correctly. Not ideal. Hopefully the portal can giveth just as it taketh away.

This makes no sense simply from a timing standpoint. The portal deadline is May 1. So you enter the portal on April 26 and give yourself a whopping 4 days to sign somewhere else? Nathan's older brother, Austin, is a senior TE, returning player, and a 3 year starter.

I believe the May 1 deadline only applies to entering the portal. As long as you are in the portal by May 1, you can still sign after that date and still have immediate eligibility.

Yes for athletes to be immediately eligible for fall and winter sports they must enter portal by 5/1.
Interesting that in first year 2021 13,000 entered and 11,000 not picked up. Players are risking scholarships.
Rule says coaches can't talk to player before they enter portal. Must be thousands of NCAA rule monitors watching!! Lol

Stand corrected. Yes, have to enter by May 1. The portal is exploding right now according to some articles I am reading.

What we have to understand is that there are a variety of reasons kids jump into the transfer portal. Some make total sense (Kase & Goehring) and some will NEVER make sense (ie. Kai Henry & Jeremiah Webb). Unfortunately, it going to be a consistent and volatile environment until the NCAA puts some parameters on who and when you can enter the transfer portal and not lose a year. Until that is done, it’s going to be the Wild Wild West and basically free agency for very few and complete lunacy for most.
As far as USD goes, the WR room has been affected the most by transfers or guys who just decided not to play anymore. What started out, at the end of last season, as a strong suit with tons of experience, has now been whittled down to only 2 players (Elidor and Bell) with any sort of game experience. And yes, some said it earlier, the coaches better be in tune that Bell might transfer after this fall because he will be graduating with two years left to play and absolutely has the ability to play at an P-5 FBS school and quite possibly move on to the next level, so I’m sure that is a possibility. I would also be concerned that Elidor may do the same boat with 1 year of eligibility left. We can speculate on who else is good out of the young WRs, but until we actually see them produce it is all guess work. Body type, the look, speed and height mean nothing if they can’t produce when the bullets are flying in a game, so the jury is still out. There are definitely a couple promising guys.
With the rest of the team, of course there are guys to replace through graduation and guys that were injured this spring, but all other positions seem to be in a good place as far as depth and talent expect the kicking game. Should be a fun season this fall.

As I said with the WRs, the jury is still out until it’s done “in game” not on air with no meaning behind the kick. The bar is set very, very high at USD, in the kicking game. There definitely are good prospects there, though.
