That would seem to me to be a bad sign for her remaining at USD if it's indeed that far along.
Immensely appreciative of everything she built and achieved here, but if she starts recruiting and taking our players she's dead to me. All the laudatory rhetoric about USD would just be empty words. I say this with full realization that many fans bow down at the mention of her name. Well I hate to say it elcoyote, but Dawn is dead to you. She is the reason those two are in the transfer portal. They both have a visit to West Virginia lined up where you better believe Dawn will put on the full court press. I hear both girls really do like Coach K, and that having her at USD is making this a very tough decision. When it comes to Krull Nebraska is probably also now in the mix.
I obviously hope both girls stay and I think they would get more enjoyment out of their college careers if they did. However, I would understand if they didn't. You have your coach trying to get you to come play at a Power 5 school. I can see the draw in that. I'm sure that is enticing.
While it would certainly hurt to lose them, like many others have said, we still have many other capable players. Dawn had a pretty short bench, but I don't think that is because the girls we had on the bench weren't capable. Certainly we will take a step back next year, but not as big of a step back as what some of our rivals might be thinking we will. And the more I hear about Coach K from those in the know the more I believe she is a rising star. She wasn't brought in to hold this team together, it's just a bonus that she might be able to do that. Obviously nobody knows for sure what kind of head coach someone will be before they have actually been one, but it sounds like she has all the traits of being a really good one. I'm excited for the future of the program and to see where Coach K can bring us.

Dawn is dead to me?? My hope is our great fan base is very careful with the rhetoric we are using when talking about Coach P. I am excited about the future and Coach K will need to build her own program and put her own stamp on the future. She will not be Coach P and nor should she try to be but needs to be who she is. My hope is we hired Coach Kayla to build a program with her vision and eventually her kids. I am sure Maddie and Kyah will weigh out all options and do what is best for their futures. Painting someone out to be a villain is not helpful.
I am not sure what the impact this could have on AJ but we may remember that he is still at USD and sounds like is almost cleared to play again. That’s great news. Stating his mother is dead to me or even bashing her in anyway cannot be beneficial to his experiences here. We all have feelings concerning things but also need to remember our words have an impact on other people. As stated earlier I am happy Coach K has the opportunity to sell her vision to Kyah and Maddie and they will need to decide what’s best for their futures. If you look at most coaches that have been hired this year multiple players have followed their coach to the new job. Unfortunately most athletes when choosing a school decide on their relationship with the coach and not necessarily the University. My hope is that these two stay but I will not partake in bashing Coach Williams or Coach P or Coach Bluder if they decide to play there. I have total belief Coach K will build a great program and that was what she was hired to do.

It will be nice when the dust settles and we know what our roster looks like, who's going to be on it, and we can get down to seeing what Kayla can build here. There's a lot of distraction surrounding the portal players that needs to be settled, along with Coach building a staff around her, and once all of that is done we'll know what we're looking at for next year. My realistic expectations for this season are a strong 2nd place in the summit regular season, an appearance in the WNIT, and most importantly impressive growth and advancement in development of our existing players. Hopefully we land a couple of great recruits as well, as we may have a couple scholarships open. If we achieve those goals we'll have had a great first season to build on. I have a great feeling about Coach K, she's going to be great for USD.

Despite what the mouth breathers in Brookings think, USD was the best team in the conference by a large margin. It wasn't really even close. Yeah we're losing 3 great players but there's plenty of talent still on the roster to win the league again.

I expected to be attacked for my statement and hesitated before tapping post, but I'm sticking to my guns on this one. If someone/anyone does things to hurt our program I'm not a fan and why should I be?

I just hope they bring Chloe on board as a grad asst. Maybe. I kinda think it would be good for her to play some pro ball in Europe for a season or two, just to get the experience. Then come back and GA. But if she wants to go straight into coaching, I certainly wouldn’t mind!

I’m with elcoyote on this one, Dawn is an exceptional coach, but if she’s telling people she’s not actively trying to hurt USD while simultaneously poaching the remaining two starters then that’s kinda low. I get it that it’s basketball and it’s all a business but just be upfront about it like why be so shady. Thats what doesn’t sit well with me.
At the end of the day we don’t know, and probably never will know, what the real story is. What we do know is that the Dawn P era is closed for us all, and the Coach K era has officially began. Dawn is not dead to me but I see no point of holding her up on a pedestal IF the rumors are true.

Here’s my analogy. Only a thought. First 0f all the Plitizuweit family is first class. Nothing short of first class. So ask yourself this question. Did Dawn leave the program in a better way than when she came? Easy answer….yes. A great deal of her success can be attributed to her dynamic personality. Kids like her and they trust her. So that being said I find it very feasible that Maddie and Kiya want to continue to play for her. I find it very plausible that Dawn has discouraged them from coming but at the end of the day if they’re going to transfer out regardless, she’d be a fool not to recruit them. AJ doesn’t want to sit in Vermillion and listen to his mom get bashed. No kid wants to hear that.
IF Dawn is not being straight forward and is actively trying to steal them from USD, then that’s a different thing. I know Dawn pretty well and my money is on everything being above board and doing her best to talk them into staying. Dawn did great things for USD let’s not forget that. She also got paid well to do great things. So both sides won.
Let’s take the high road and move forward with Kayla. Support Maddie and Kiya. They’ve earned that.

We should have nothing but respect for Dawn and what she did for the program. Bashing her is absolutely classless. But I highly doubt Dawn is actively trying to talk Maddie and Kyah into staying at USD. If they want to play for her and Dawn thinks they can help her team at WVU then you bet she is going to recruit them to come play for her. As she should. Her job there is to win just like it was here. It would suck losing those 2, but I wouldn't blame Dawn a bit for trying to get them to come with her.

I’ve been told by a close friend of hers that Dawn is “encouraging” them to stay. I believe that. And as I said in original post, if the girls have told Dawn that they are leaving, then by all means she should recruit them if they fit into her new program.
Dawns job is to win at West Virginia, but there is also a certain deal of ethics that should apply. She did USD good, but we also did her good. When the girls needed a late season return to Macomb to finish out the conference season prior to the tournament, there was a group of alumni that raised the $$$ to make that happen so they wouldn’t have to have a long bus charter both ways and have fatigue heading into the tournament. Things like that enabled her to propel our gals through to the Sweet 16. If we hadn’t made the fabulous run they did, would Dawn been as high up on the list as she was after that? No one knows for sure.
So what I’m trying to say is there HAS to be respect and integrity both ways. Dawn doesn’t get the West Virginia gig without USD. And USD doesn’t get all the publicity and excitement of that run without her. It is not in Dawns best interest to do things to ruin all the good there was from her career. She simply can’t metaphorically slip Coyote Nation the middle finger.
If Maddie and Kiya want to leave, and have no “tug at the heart” feelings on being a Coyote, then move on and let Coach K do her thing her way. I think deep down both these gals love both USD and Coach P. And that’s the way it should be. If their affinity for Dawn is greater than USD, then they’re gone. We’ll survive.

I sure hope me presenting the reality of the situation hasn't come across as me bashing Dawn. I'm not passing judgment on what she is doing, I'm only stating what she is doing and others can pass their own judgment on what they think of it. If Dawn was truly encouraging those two to stay then they wouldn't be in the portal. They really like it at USD and they like the new hire. If they felt Dawn wanted them to stay at USD they never would have entered the portal in the first place. Do I think Dawn is bragging to those close to her about trying to get these girls to WV? Of course not. Do I think Dawn is flying them out to WV to try and convince them to stay at USD? Of course not.
Dawn was great for USD, but she is now the WV coach. She is going to do what's best for them. She is as competitive as they come, that's what helps fuel her greatness. Would we have a problem if Coach K talked a few good Drake players into coming here? I doubt that most would.
I really agree with the last paragraph from yoteforever last post. Hopefully their love for USD will win out. If not, we'll survive. No matter what I will be thankful for what Dawn and those players gave us during their time here, and will be interested to see who Coach K can bring in from the transfer portal if we end up having to fill those scholarships.

I just personally have bad feelings over coaches that take more money-alot more in this case- to move an arguably lesser program, then take players from your old program with you.
And I hate when that happens in college sports in general, so maybe a little extra salt in the wound if it happens in this case. Also bugs me that we heard over and over about leaving a legacy at usd as it relates to the super seniors, then I think this class could potentially do the same thing 2-3 years from now so it’s just painful that we are having the discussion.

It is what it is...makes no sense to whine and moan about it. The portal has changed the landscape of college athletics. Dawn owes us nothing, Maddie and Kiyah owe us nothing. Like YF said, all 3 have represented USD in a first class way and been compensated accordingly. Like it or not, college athletics is a business. Sometimes it can be cold hearted. Dawn left for more $$$ and a bigger conference and more exposure. We all knew it would happen eventually. No reason to be bitter.
The transfer portal is a cruel reality for mid majors. If athletes perform well at a mid major it will attract bigger suitors. We wouldn't be mad about somebody getting a work promotion or leaving a for a company that would pay them more money if they deserved it. We need to stop getting our feelings hurt when coaches or athletes move on to take bigger opportunities. Do I like it when coaches leave or players enter the portal? No, I think it sucks. But it's not like it happens because these people want to piss off USD fans or hurt our feelings. They see it as a promotion. it's not going to change any time soon.

Hopefully they stay but there is a certain poetry almost to a new coach and a whole new starting five.
