I thought I would do a little research. I echo the sentiment that I hope they stay but it surely will not be all doom and gloom if they leave.
Coach P’s first year Jaz and Caitlyn Duffy were hurt and did not play the entire year. In essence we returned no starters and brought back very few players with any substantial playing time..
I could not find the conference rpi that year but I believe it was the best in history. Western Illinois won the conference and SDSU, iupui, USD we’re all very good. Omaha had their best team with 2 all conference kids and Oral Roberts was solid. Even North Dakota State was respectable that year as they beat us at their place.
With no starters returning we played the last game of the regular season at Western Illinois for a chance to win the conference regular season.
This is my reasoning in the belief that this program will do just fine. It is so important that Coach K gets to develop her own program in the mold that she wants it to be. Heck I have been told sometimes when a program has been unbelievably successful and there is a coaching change it is harder to reach the kids who played as they will be more resistance to change. I surely do not want Maddie and Kyah to leave but maybe some unforeseen benefits will occur.
We do not know what kind of system Coach K wants to implement at USD. She has been around lots of different styles. If I remember when she played at UWGB they played a man defense but also used the buzz zone. While she was coaching at Wisconsin I am not sure they played any defense. When we played Drake they were in a man and also a match up zone.
So many factors to consider. I have no idea what her offense will look like, as USD and UW and Drake are vastly different in how they approach the offensive end of the game. I have heard very few comments on her philosophy on offense or defense so it is hard to even determine what it could look like for players. It should be exciting because things will be different and we as fans will be subjected to a new style of basketball. I truly trust the process and both DH and President G were absolutely confident they got the right person. I trust their opinion.
My thoughts on the conference next year is SDSU will be very good returning basically everyone and adding Dru and some talented freshman. I believe we have the ability to be good and keep improving throughout the year(regardless if Maddie and Kyah are here) the rest of the conference lost key players and I think the conference will be down in general which makes perfect timing for us to grow through the learning process of a new style.
FYI did anyone see what UMKC is paying their new Women’s Basketball coach. Looks like they are investing in their program which can only help our league. I thought I saw 345k
