This is an interesting read about the risks of the transfer portal. In 2021, only 54% of portal entrants enrolled at a new school. It's basically a coin flip for these young men that enter the portal. This article claims that only about 1/3 of FCS transfers find a scholly on another roster. Only 36% of FCS transfers find another school at all. I'm sure if you're an established guy at the FBS level the chances of a successful transfer increase, but for FCS guys or depth chart casualties the chances that you find a spot somewhere else are pretty bleak. www.si.com/fannation/college/cfb-hq/ncaa-football/college-football-transfer-portal-numbers-risky-move-for-athletes |

Somebody help me out here, but I can't think of a single USD player who's entered the portal and really come out ahead as far as moving up and earning significant playing time or really any at all. I get guys who drop down a division for PT. That makes some sense.

That's it. That's the list. I do think Camp will find himself a new spot though. Maybe some of the others as well. Guys like Spencer Rattler (appears he is on the move again) make the transfer portal news and get held up in the media as the "standard". He is not the norm for the transfer portal. Look at the stats above, numbers don't lie. Unless you are hopelessly buried on the depth chart and you've had "the talk" with the coaching staff where you were encouraged to seek new opportunities, I'd be very cautious about entering the portal. |

Yes VG was pre portal so had to go a division for a year at Iowa Western then could go to Wisconsin which was his goal.
So concept was similar. He thought he would get more recognition at Wisconsin.
But either option rarely works as well as it did for him.

I believe we do a pretty good job in the Portal. On the all-conference newcomer team where we placed 4, 3 of them are Portal transfers.

I had a feeling this was going to happen in the RB group regardless of how this season went. Too much young talent in that group and not enough touches to go around. Hopefully he's the only one that decides to leave and Thomas comes back strong. |
