Good hire Who knows, maybe he will be here longer than we expect. You have to wonder why he left the Jacks a couple of years ago after a 9-year stint. Opportunities for him to move up probably would have involved leaving SDSU and South Dakota anyway, since AJ isn't going anywhere. Although he has been coaching for 30 years, it looks like he still has some youngish kids. Maybe he is thinking Coach Karius is more likely to move on after 4-6 years with some success, giving him an opportunity to move up to a D-1 HC, and still stay in his home state.... a pretty rare opportunity. Especially for a male coach in WBB these days. just thinking out loud.

His oldest was I believe first team all-state recently and is currently playing at Augie.

I was guessing that he wanted to spend more time at home with family as a reason for leaving SDSU but that was just a guess. I think he will do great things at USD. He is a really easy guy to talk to that knows his basketball. Plus, like what was said, he knows the area for recruiting. After he left SDSU to be the AD at Brookings High School, I saw him at WalMart and he still had time to stop and say Hi. I think that he will help USD get back at the top of the Summit League soon. I thought they would do that anyway but hiring coaches like this is a great thing for USD in my opinion. I would have liked it if he would have came back to SDSU but I wish him the best. I know there are things like openings, timing, getting more experiences at different places, working with other coaches and things like that so congratulations to both him and USD.

I had heard from a source that he missed coaching and was turned down for the Augustana Women's job. It sounds like his daughter that plays at Auggie will be coming to USD with him.

This is a great hire, and also intriguing based on his longtime jacks connections. We’ll see how it plays out but this brings me a lot more optimism for the future.
This hire now makes 2 usd assistant coaches that have coached at SDSU as important assistants. Not very often that happens.

Seems like a minor point, but I wonder if he will just commute from Brookings, with how long he has lived there, and his younger kids still being in high school? I guess if his oldest is going to walk-on in Vermillion, there's that. It's a long commute, but not impossible (less than two hours).

Another news nugget: Rogers High School (Hannah’s high school) just announced Mike Pomroy as its new head boys basketball coach!

Well I guess time to hire an assistant. I am hoping the administration opens their pockets and pay an experienced coach to help the program. The staff in general is very young and through their careers have done more losing than winning. I have no names currently but Chloe is an interesting name and incredible person but may not be the person this program needs currently. I surely may be wrong but we gambled hiring a head coach with no experience as a head coach now we need to make sure she has what she needs to develop and be successful. The good news is the Summit league is not very good. It should be rather easy to get to second place in the conference so in reality our sights need to be on SDSU. And what it takes to beat them on a regular basis.Looks like you made a good prediction!

Our bio for him as Video Coordinator failed to mention that he was previously a High School GBB coach in Minnesota, as well as a North Tartan coach. Maybe he was a secret weapon for recruiting North Tartan? Anyway, good luck to him!

We now have 17 players on the roster so a lease a couple maybe more will be red shirted. If Jewetts daughter would come that would be 18. Players will have to earn playing time

We now have 17 players on the roster so a lease a couple maybe more will be red shirted. If Jewetts daughter would come that would be 18. Players will have to earn playing time I think you mean "greyshirt", meaning: non-scholarship. AKA walk-on. Players who redshirt are typically still on scholarship. 1. We already know Coral Mason will be walking on. 2. We have heard that one of the players in our large group of current Sophomores (next season's juniors) might be graduating this year. I speculated it might be Hempe. I guess we will find out soon. 3. If Jewett's kid comes to Vermillion, I'm certain she would be a walk-on. The bigger question is actually regarding scholarships for the 2024 recruiting class. We have two verbal commits and one more offer out there, but AFAIK there will only be two scholarships open from the two graduating players (Grange and DePerry). Maybe our coaches already know a player that is planning to graduate next year rather than taking a covid year (changing status from junior to senior)? These are all good problems to have, rather than being in a situation of scrambling to fill a roster, or having constant, yearly attrition of your best players (like many of our opponents in this league). Losing Watson and Krull in 2022 still sucked, but for us it was a rare event IMHO.

I think you can have 15 active players, Mason will be one player to sit the year out. I think Jewett would be on . So 2 scholarship players will set of course injuries play a part. We want to do this to a future good player so they don't waste a year on the bench. I remember when Staney wasted his freshman year not playing . its a good problem to have. I like our 2 portal players this year
