Greetings from Missouri. I have to admit that I don't know very much about this particular South Dakota football team, but I do have a lot of respect for the Missouri Valley Football Conference. I remember a pretty close game that you all had at kansas a couple years ago and I also remember watching your game against Missouri State in the spring during the weird Covid season.
Moving the game to Thursday night was certainly inconvenient to those traveling from several hours away, but it looks like a great decision from a weather perspective. Should be good conditions at gametime. This is our second straight season of opening the season at home on a Thursday night after we moved up the Louisiana Tech game last year and I thought it brought a lot of energy to the crowd, especially our students.
I would think if there was an official betting line on this game or whatever that it would be in the 30s. SEMO has come here a couple of times in recent years when they have made the FCS playoffs and the games have been over by halftime. Missouri Valley teams always give me a bit more concern, but I think it would be a very ominous sign for Eli Drinkwitz's tenure at Mizzou if this game is close.

Happy to hear from an opposing fan, doesn't usually happen on the FBS-FCS games. I'd imagine those SEMO teams would have never made the playoffs if they played in the MVFC. The Missouri Valley as a whole is many miles ahead of the rest of the FCS. Even the SEC's dominance over FBS football can't compare to what the MVFC has on FCS football. What that means for Thursday's game? Can't say. Our team was very disappointing last year, considering we returned a healthy chunk of a playoff team (that 2021 team where we gifted Kansas the game and they stormed the field afterwards). If we return to playoff form and Mizzou is still a 6-win team then I would fully expect this to be a game after halftime. I have no idea what to expect from USD or Mizzou though. I do find it mildly interesting that we shared a common opponent last year in Kansas State (beat USD by 34 and Mizzou by 28). What's the pulse on Mizzou? Looks like three .500 seasons with him in charge. Expecting a step forward in year 4?

kfordratings.com/preseason-expectationsMissouri is expected to be about .500 again this year, but have quite a few toss up games that could boost their resume. Defense is expected to be their strength. I don’t expect us to win, but I hope to make it less comfortable than they want. I’m no coach, but our best offensive strategy might be to just go bombs away with a bunch of trick plays.

Looks like three .500 seasons with him in charge. Expecting a step forward in year 4? I've used that comparison of the MVFC being like the SEC of FCS football to several fans in the past. I am originally from the Springfield area so I started following Missouri State closer when they hired Dave Steckel. The Petrino teams were entertaining in a sense so I paid attention to them as well. I do think there are a lot of Missouri fans that just look at the USD record from last year and assume it will be an easier game. I remember our game in 2014 with your friends up in Brookings when we ended up winning the SEC East and I believe that SDSU team was a top 10 playoff team in FCS and that one ended up 38-18. The fact we both played K-State last year is not lost on me either. I've made that point to a couple of my colleagues at work (that the scores were similar). That game was a total debacle out there from our perspective and was close until we turned it over on three consecutive offensive plays or maybe it was 3 out of 4, but it was ridiculous. Drinkwitz is in a weird spot. He just got a contract extension last year, but he has like you said done really nothing but go .500. His predecessor, Barry Odom, was fired for going 6-6 in 2019 after having winning seasons in 2017 and 2018 so it is an interesting situation. I'm used to very boring football coaches like Gary Pinkel and Barry Odom, this guy fits the SEC profile better but his tendency to talk a lot is not something I am accustomed to and probably doesn't fit the historic profile of Mizzou the best. Everyone here is assuming we start out 2-0 after this game and a home game against Middle Tennessee State before a rematch against Kansas State in Columbia that is thought to be the 2023 bellwether game.

You're take on it is pretty good Mizzou. No one really knows what this USD team is going to be like this year. We could win 9 games or we could win 3 or anywhere in the middle. I'm always cheering but I'm also realistic and skeptical of our FCS teams since we transitioned. My gut is that you guys win by 30 and we show a lot of "growth opportunity" for the rest of the season. If that is the case, hopefully it sets the stage for us to improve moving into the meat of our FCS schedule and we can surprise a few folks later in the year and make the playoffs.

The amount of Mizzou fans replying to our FB account on the Twitter machine is odd. I just can't imagine if we played Briar Cliff talking smack in the replies to their posts.

I’ve noticed that as well. It reeks of insecurity. Although, I’d say the comparison is more similar to us playing USF or Augie. There would be a slight chance they could win, but I would be embarrassed to talk smack online.

Well I think there are a lot of people wanting revenge for the volleyball loss last year and you all beating our women's basketball team a couple of times, including once when they were pretty good in Columbia. But in all seriousness, I have a limited presence on social media these days so I haven't seen anything. Seems like general trolling from a segment of our fans from how you describe it. It's like that with other SEC schools from what I have seen. Our coach and AD seem to lean into it sometimes with our regional rivals like Arkansas and kansas but it does surprise me to see it when playing a MVC school that isn't Missouri State.

Tonight's game is being streamed on the SEC Network, and when I click on the link, it brings me to my ESPN+ login (which I've been misdirected to with other games previously). Does anyone know if we'll be able to watch it with a current ESPN+ subscription, or do we have to sign up for something else to see it? I'd rather not have to fumble through it during kickoff if possible!

It is not part of the ESPN+ subscription. If you do have a login for cable you can add that under your profile setting (TV Provider is the option). Maybe a friend or relative who does pay for cable can share their login info if you don't have your own

I have espn+ and now it's showing there which it hadn't been until yesterday, so I assume just espn+ will work.
Go Yotes!! In these games a big key is not to have any turnovers and create a couple and no dumb penalties.

In these games a big key is not to have any turnovers and create a couple and no dumb penalties. I saw that as well this morning, which is what prompted me to post the message. I've also had that happen in the past where ESPN+ removes the event minutes before game time. I'm crossing my fingers on this one because I'd really like to watch it.

My gut is telling me just having ESPN+ isn't going to work. The game will be listed on the screen but when you click on it you'll get a message saying you are not authorized to view this event and to input your provider info. You're going to need to have SEC Network to watch this game.
Past experience from trying to watch previous SEC and ACC Network games over ESPN+.

I hope everyone is able to find a way to watch the game tonight somehow. Completely unrelated, but I read a newspaper article yesterday that indicated that the guarantee money for this game ($650,000) is the highest payout in USD history. Very interesting. I do wonder how FCS teams are going to fund things moving forward with more conference games at the P5 level and fewer of these sorts of matchups. As an alum of an SEC school (it was a Big XII school when I was there) I feel like the upper tier of FBS football has a responsibility and obligation to help the game at the FCS level but I don't know how many other people feel that way to be honest.
