Well just got done watching the Missouri game and quite interesting for sure. Definitely a little closer than I thought after the start of the game. Got some major issues on defense and our ability to match personnel. We don’t play in the Big 12 so that 3-3 tire front crap needs to be scrapped vs TE dominate teams. Way too many edge runs and improper fits in the run game. Correctable stuff but need to be a four man front team in the MVFC the majority of the time.
Offensively, some major question marks with play selection and choices on who we are targeting in our passing game. Truly hope we were trying to limit exposure on film of our top WR and TE (our 2 top returning pass catchers). Religating our top WR, one if not the best slot WRs in the MVFC to 5 yard hitch routes only as an outside WR and then targeting our excellent TE once. The run game was going to be difficult no matter what vs that defense of front

I am not discouraged either. Playing against an SEC team, we have new offense, fresh players, and are on a big(ish) stage. Our defense looked hungry for 4 quarters and bounced back quickly through mistakes. Run game will improve- that is about as deep as a position group can get at USD but, gaining yardage through a well-rounded and good SEC D-Line when your own line is barely holding on is a tough feat (yet we still did it, even if it was only 1-3 yrds). Hold an offensive line better and then give Bouman a bit more time to throw and open up that run even more and suddenly the so-called "anemic" offensive looks fantastic. If at this point you think this is a repeat of last year then yeah, you might just want to stop watching now.

The run game was going to be difficult no matter what vs that defense of front Please just announce to the board who you are. Then your posts time after time will make sense. You have berated Coach Nielsen and his staff at every turn. Last year when you made your post about unacceptable and embarrassing loss to UNI ( which it was ) tell the board what happened the week before. Please don’t act like you’re Joe Fan, it’s not becoming of you. Obviously the game didn’t go like we wanted. Their lines were simply better than ours. It’s no secret we need to improve, but teams that believe in themselves do that every week. For all those bitching about the young man that targeted, that was a BS call. The receiver made a play and our guy led with his arm and turned his shoulder. It was not targeting. Their radio guy even said the refs would be walking back that call. It was 14-3 at that point and we had shown signs of moving the ball. If we get the ball back and drive, who knows. But that call turned the tide of the game. Second half they played their starters on offense and 7 on defense late into the game. Put yourself in our players shoes. You’re playing on national TV against an SEC team. I don’t think Missouri is all that good but for gods sake it’s a tall task for us go in and be 3 and out on defense. And move the ball every series. It’s football for Gods sake. Did you really believe in your heart we’d go in there and win? We played them 7-7 second half. If we don’t have the controversial calls that games goes 21-14 Missouri. The players did not give up. They battled till the end. Post game they were somber. It’s a different feel. Last year with all the chaos our team quiteeek after week. This team did not quit. At least wait till we’re 7-8 games into the season before you lynch the staff and players. And whoever said 3-8? Private message me so we can make a wager of size. I’ll take that bet all day long.

That was an SEC team. Did anyone honestly expect us to win that game? I know you never go into a game without thinking you can win it, but come on. I've been as negative as anybody about the program the last 12 months or so, but I don't really have a problem with the product on the field last night. Sure, they came out slow and the running game left a lot to be desired, but I saw enough to keep me optimistic going forward. I actually liked what the new offense was doing contrary to some posters on here. I thought the staff made some great halftime adjustments which is something we haven't done a great job of in recent years. OL still has some work to do, but again that was a deep SEC front 7 - not something we'll have to deal with week in and week out.
The Yotes fought hard and didn't quit, stayed mostly healthy I think, put a few points on the board, and cashed the check. That's what I wanted to see from them. I have no problem calling out the team, staff, etc when it's warranted - most of you should know that if you've been around a while. It's not time for that.

It won't be the only one....We should have moved on. I have said many times that we needed a change after last season, but it's not a productive statement in the middle of game 1 against an SEC opponent. We have a whole season and every opportunity ahead of us. If this game is going to make you melt down then I don't even understand why you are watching. I can forgive being physically overmatched. I'll never forgive lack of effort or being unprepared. Maybe the first half was a little shell shock at the speed of their athletes. I couldn't watch the second half but it sounds like it went better. How deep into the roster did missouri go in the second half? There will be better days and I will continue to watch and root. I'm just mentally done with Bob after the debacle at home last year against UNI. It will take a while for me to get back on his wagon. It sucks because he is a likeable dude. I am happy to hear we made some halftime adjustments. That's refreshing.

Men showed good heart in the second half. Cash the check, take the learnings from that game and get better. We aren't going to, and we're not supposed to, compete with anyone in the SEC. We beat the spread, no key injuries, and didn't get housed, I consider it a pretty decent night. Now if we don't defeat St Thomas soundly....well I'll start sounding the alarm.

I agree with your take here. The second half was pretty discouraging from our perspective but I think you have to give quite a bit of credit to South Dakota for fighting hard. It was hard for me to take too much from this game either way with both teams playing relatively conservatively in my estimation. I will certainly be rooting for you all to do well in the Missouri Valley this season. Best of luck.

Watched the game at Carey's last night. A guy casually walked up, looked at the TV and then me and said "Looks like we are playing a team who's built not to be embarrassed by Alabama."
I thought it was an excellent point of view. Onward we go. It's tailgatin szn!

Just curious as this seems to be the new normal for our program (at least the next 2 years), why do we schedule a power 5 every year? Do we need the money that badly? Probably do. Or do the players/recruits want it? Although I've been to a few of these and they are definitely a fun road trip, it is a little disheartening and demoralizing to get your butts whooped every year, risk injuries, and start off 0-1. A nice cupcake win every once in a while would be nice. Maybe we'll build to that.

It's great funding for our athletic department and a great experience for our kids. All of that is way better than beating Dakota Wesleyan by 40.

Actually won two--Minnesota in our D2 days and more recently Bowling Green and have been close with some. Funding is great! Or we could schedule D2 Western Oregon and beat them 45-7 like the bunnies did yest in brooktown AND they have Drake scheduled again!! They love patsies!!! Once a year it is ok to challenge yourself.

The year we beat Bowling Green was the second game played that year. We opened on the road at Drake and ran all over them. It is nice to start the year of with a win. It seems like there are getting to be fewer and fewer of these FCS/P5 games every year. With the advent of the P5 superconferences, these games might go the way of the dodo in the near future. Personal I do like them to a degree, but would rather play a G5 than a P5. Not as much money, but a better chance to win.

I feel like this question has been posed in the past, and the answer from those connected has been that we do need the payout. I'm sure we could cut spending and be fine without it but then we will start complaining about other things.
As a fan, I enjoy the P5 games. Close games with Kansas and Kansas State in recent years were very fun. Playing playoff teams in Oregon and Oklahoma was very cool. I have no problem keeping these games on the schedule as long as we do the rest of our non-conference right (don't turn around and play Montana).

I don't think that SDSU really wanted to play Western Oregon, but when Stewart's School of Hairstyling cancelled they had no choice.

Once a year it is ok to challenge yourself. 16,000 showed up to the game against Western Oregon. We wouldn't have to play Missouri if we could do that. And I will mention that the MVFC provides every challenge an FCS school needs and they are the most recent to conquer every challenge at the FCS level. I swear. How some of you can turn this into intra-state smack and then think you have any ground to stand on is baffling.
