Thurs starting at 5pm? Must be doing everything possible to guarantee an empty building to kick off the season. I was really looking forward to a great Sat tailgate opener. Sure hope there is a legit reason for going in this direction. Personally, I think it sucks.

If we expect teams like Wisconsin, Missouri, K State, Oklahoma to schedule the Yotes, we should certainly be willing to schedule a D2 team, especially in a 12 game season and a local team at that. I doubt Northern State gets the same financial benefit as we get playing FBS schools. I thought scheduling a team like Mizzou or Wisconsin covers most of the FB seasons budget. Why not get Lamar or Cal Poly back on the schedule

The reason is Lamar backed out of this years game. Hence the last second scramble to find a team.

Lamar backed out...again?
In 2010 we played the first game of a home/home series down in Beaumont, TX. The next year they backed out of the return game. Now they back out of another game with us. Never schedule that school again. If they call, hang up the phone.
Northern State on a Thursday sounds horrible. If we have to endure playing an awful opponent like that at least make it on Saturday so we can have some fun. I see a whole lot of $5 flash sale ticket offers for that one. I hope that game is deeply discounted for season ticket holders.

Lamar had a conflict and we let them reschedule our return for a later date. As in years down the line. That’s how the game with Portland State came into the equation as well
We go down there in 2025 I believe

Montana State wouldn't play us and other FCS schools declined. Sometimes, you have to take what you can get especially when they change it to a 12 game schedule. Nothing bad about this except it may not allow some fans to attend because it's a Thursday night game. Remember, it's not about the beer or the brats in the parking lot before the game, it's about supporting our team and the young men who represent the logo. If that deters some from coming, then just BBQ in your backyard on Saturday afternoons.

A backyard BBQ would be more interesting than scrimmaging Northern State. An empty dome on a Thursday against a D2 school does nothing for the program.

I f we can't get anyone to schedule us what are we to do? I heard Stephen F. Austin was in play, but they wanted the moon and stars. In reality this should have been taken care of two years ago not waiting until seven months before the season.

In reality this should have been taken care of two years ago not waiting until seven months before the season. But why on a Thursday? I'm sure there's a reason, I guess. If it's a facility scheduling problem, you'd think football would take priority over anything else in the dome. I'm just saying, this crowd will look a lot like the spring game crowds we've seen in the past. I'll still be there, but I feel like I'm being robbed of a football Saturday in Vermillion.

It is the Thursday before Labor Day weekend. Obviously, it should help generate a good student turnout. We had a fantastic 2023 season and I look forward to the Yotes taking another step or two in 2024. Let's embrace the season opener and make it an event.
FWIW, SDSU played Western Oregon (a D2 school that went 3-8 in 2023) on the Thursday night before labor day 2023 in front of 16,258 fans.

In 2023 the 'rabbits had a Division 2 team with scholarships and a Division 1 team without scholarships on the schedule. The 'rabbits beat the D1 team without scholarships, away from home on a neutral field, by a score of 70 to 7. The home game against the D2 team with scholarships was something like 45 to 7. The D2 game for you this coming season is probably a better game from both a fan interest and a team development perspective tha a non-scholly opponentwould be. The best fans will be there if they can. I agree that Thursday night is less than ideal. I also have to travel for home games, about 350 miles each direction.

Scheduling on short notice is hard. I can understand why this game had to happen. I'd rather have Northern than Augustana (curious how state ended up with them on the schedule instead of another Western Oregon).
I can't understand the reasoning behind a Thursday game. Most of the fanbase travels an hour plus for games. Why make it harder for us? There are so precious few home football games, why move one to Thursday? So disappointing to see this happen. I can remember happily going to a home game against NAIA William Penn, because it was a Saturday in the Fall. This game is shaping up to be an obligation.

I hope that game is deeply discounted for season ticket holders. We had 6 home games against D1 schools last year. This year we will have 5 of those plus this Northern scrimmage on a Thursday. I will bet you anything the season ticket price will be the same.
