Not sure what we get out of it? We are top 10 in FCS! Some say top 5!?! We are an attractive opponent at every level. Poor effort from the scheduling dept. They’ve had years to find a quality opponent especially with the date(s) given.

Just a guess here, but after the season we had last year and with what we have returning I'm thinking no FCS team was very eager to schedule an away game against us.

Although my preference would be a Saturday game as well, think about the reasoning of why it’s Thursday. For starters this game should’ve been filled a couple years ago but it wasn’t. Our new AD made a decision to take this game and play it on a Thursday night for what I feel are all the right reasons. It’s Labor Day weekend so the students will be blowing out of Vermillion on Friday for the 3 day weekend. In a renewed effort to start engaging our student body he can capture their potential attendance and possibly coordinate it with a special promotion ( gimmick ) to start a new era of Coyote football.
I do understand those that can’t attend or engage in a full tailgate or puts a wrench into what could be a normal Saturday game, but I give AD Schemmel a thumbs up for trying to renew interest with the student body. I’m retired so the game could be on Wednesday morning and I’d come, but that doesn’t apply to everyone. My hopes are resting on the fact Coyote football is on the rise and should enter the season nationally ranked. That should spur interest from “us”…..the everyday fan. While Thursday night isn’t perfect, it’s doable. Let’s take a negative and turn it into a positive. Think of the energy that could spawn off a successful first night.
It is what it is. Let’s do our best to “kick off” Labor Day weekend in style.

I understand and share some of the frustrations people have with this, but also understand the reasons behind it. All in all, it’s not a bad outcome for what was a less than ideal situation. It’s a chance to safely experiment with a new-to-us option and I agree that we can choose to do our best to support it or not complain if we don’t.
If attendance outlook is a concern, I wonder if we could move the student section back to the west side for this one game just to make attendance look a little better for the tv cameras. Probably a logistical nightmare with season tickets, but just a thought.
As for playing Northern State, they may be the best D2 opponent choice - especially if we’re looking to establish a long-tern D2 fallback option. They should never upset us and the game may garner some media interest from smaller outlets that don’t typically cover USD sports.
Go Yotes!

Also, further evidence that the new AD is willing to experiment with different ideas.

We are making the best of the situation we're in. I hate that we have to have the conversation about how to make the crowd look better for TV optics, but I guess that's where we're at. I do think people are overestimating the student attendance here. Half of campus will probably be blasting out of Verm Thursday after class. I'm also convinced that most of the students that we do get to come to games are coming inside as more of an afterthought after tailgating. I really doubt there will be any tailgating to speak of on a Thursday afternoon to draw kids over to the dome. I hope I'm wrong but I have a feeling it'll be a quiet day inside the friendly confines of the Dakota Dome. On the other hand, this is probably a big game for NSU. I wouldn't be shocked for them to bring a pretty strong contingent of fans from Aberdeen and alumni in SF.

Also, further evidence that the new AD is willing to experiment with different ideas. I like the blackout game. Actually been hoping for one for a while. I'd probably rather have it for a more interesting home game like UNI or Southern. I'm assuming UNI will be DDays though.

I can see how, with some co-marketing, both school could brand this as like a friendly little family competition between a much older stronger cousin and his spunky little cousin. I can imagine a coalition of NSU students texting their USD buddies about coming down for the game, partying afterwards, crashing at their place, and then skipping Friday class to head home for the long weekend. That would possibly convince a decent number of USD students to stick around and attend. (Shrugging emoji)

I see your point, but we’ll probably need to bust out a variety of gimmicks for the NSU game.

Got some info...regarding the Thursday game, one consideration is the students. The other is that it gives them a couple extra days of lead time for Wisconsin.
