Fans will say what they want, but to have a coach say something like this on the record would be a huge deal for UCD fans. We may complain about our coaches (especially in basketball), but no one can deny that they set a good example for the team when it comes to being a good sport. Like Dr. Mike said, it certainly didn't seem like anyone on these boards had a problem with the calls. There will be good ones and bad ones and while it may piss us off it is part of the game. I remember at our game against SJSU the fans were FURIOUS due to some of the calls, but the team did not let it phase them. I think that is why we managed to win from behind. If the coach blames it on the officiating, and the players follow suit, I can imagine it will be hard to have a winning attitude. It's starting to seem like you and some other UC Davis fans (some of them not all) are now trying to pass judgement on Ed and the Coyotes. Unless you actually saw the penalties or calls that Meierkort was complaining about I wouldn't be so quick to critisize. If Dante was obviously down or a recovery was made out of bounds those are game changing and momentum changing plays. I am not going to say that the officiating alone was the reason that lost but to say that the officiating had nothing to do with it is assassinine if what Ed claims is true. If the officiating was an embarrassment and Ed called it out for just that I have no problem with it. I did not see the plays that Ed was complaining about, if you didn't (and that goes for everyone commenting on this thread) than don't be so quick to pass judgement. If I were playing for this team and I saw some bogus call consistantly going against the team that I play on I would want my coach to call out the officiating as well.

CF are you saying that USD got into the playoffs the next year because the U wrote a letter complaining that we got screwed ? doubt it I did not say that was the sole reason because obviously with a 3-8 team they would not have made it. I will say though that by making their feeling known the year before was going to stick in the minds of the selection committee. If USD was on the fence a bit it could have made a difference. I personally don't think the 2006 team should have gone to post season. I did think the 2005 should have.

Refs are always part of the game and influence what goes on at times. The bottom line is that teams have to play well enough to overcome that and USD did not.
In listening to the game on the radio it is very difficult to get a feel for how the team really played. After going to coaches corner tonight in Sioux Falls and watching several plays - the Yotes have been tackling much better this season and it continued on Saturday night. Holding UC Davis to the limited rushing yards they did and 17 total points is progress for the D. The offense did not respond when they needed to, but I think they will.
I will take that effort and chalk it up to 3rd year in transition. If that is USD's worst FCS road game this year, I think we would take it compared with last years worst.
Cannot wait to see the match-up next week against UNI. Hope USD fans get out for the game and get loud. I am somewhat skeptical considering it is the pheasant opener and the game is on TV. USD fans need to get out and create an environment that can help our guys have a home field advantage. Herbster said he expects UNI to bring about 500 fans total.

Back to the game, best luck to the Aggies the rest of the year. Hopefully we can occasionally end up on each others schedules in the future.

A couple of things. Ed always says what is on his mind. Good, bad or ugly. It makes me laugh that people on this board didn't see the calls so they can't comment on whether Ed was justified or not, but they have no trouble throwing Warren under the bus for missing his receivers. You didn't see those either and many of the throws were balls that should have been caught. Yes, it is an incomplete pass against the QB but as we all know they are all not the QB's fault. Also, the USD defense would be in a different position (I strongly think) if Mike Friedel would not have been injured a few years ago. That injury set the defense back a few years as they didn't have set leadership. At the time of Mike's injury there was still hope that he would recover unfortunately for Mike and his family that didn't happen. Maybe Ed made some bad judgement calls there too but Mike was his friend and a good coach. Most people that knew Mike thought if anyone could recover it would be him. Ed was human when it came to that situation and probably taught his team a thing or two. He has some coaching issues sure but I don't think he could step in and do my job so I am going to try and let him do his since I know I couldn't do it any better.

Mikes circumstances are horrible, and Ed did the "human" thing in waiting, and it might have cost us some time and a couple of wins. Excellent point. When a player hangs their hat on someone, and that someone is taken away, it can be devastating. Which leads me to my latest vent. When is the state of SD gonna wake up and let the AD's offer their coaches longer term contracts than 1 year? That is insane. Ed has lost some coaches because of that, and also because of the pay. We lost a pretty good defensive coach to UM-Duluth last year. That has been somewhat of a coaching caraseoul. In my heart, I think we need some "players" on D, especially upfront. They are getting better, but their ability to force a QB to "hurry" or get sacked, just isn't there. Lastly, Dante had alot of balls dropped a UCD. Again, that has been a problem that has intensified each week, i.e gotten worse. That needs to be stopped, and stopped now. All in all, we are in good hands. Should Ed have gone off? Probably not, but then again, who cares. It's part of his entertainment factor. His kids love it, and that's all that matters.

hey guys, im pretty good friends with some of the older players younger coaches. i got the game film sent to me i have it on my lap top im trying to get it uploaded. the fumble is unbelievable. two of this kids legs are completely out of bounds. whats worse is potter had great coverage the next play and the kid made a nice catch. i dont think it was the number of penalties the players and coaches were upset about it was timing and that they were all after something either went bad for davis or good for the yotes. J5 had a great return called back by a block in the back on 37. 37 was in position to block in the back the ref instantly throws the flag then 37 holds up and literally doesnt touch the guy. another one was a PI on a int. aweful call their were 4 coyotes and one uc david kid aweful throw its embarressing a ref would bail out a terrible throw like that. one final thing the big calls all led to points for davis. also it was all but one of the big calls against us were made by the same ref on uc davis sideline. the defense looked great we should be proud of their effort. #91 had a chance at picking off a screen late in the 4th woulda probabley been a defensive td. they played with alot of emotion. as far as dante being off. kinda looked like he was missing by inches on big plays. also counted 4 big drops 2 by london. one of them hes untouched in the endzone and resulted in a FG. no excuses. but i think if everyone could see the calls instead of what ucd fans are saying. you could see why our HC was fired up. no way ucd runs the table 3-1 can win the great west. lets go yotes

Also i think from talkin to a couple of my buddies. that it seems like they are pumped the way meierkort backed them and i guess he called a random time out and called everyone together and said hey these refs do not want us to win. your getting jobbed and i feel bad for you but ya know what their is only one way we can do this. apparently everyone said TOGETHER!!! then the defense went out and got the rock back. but we fell short. but its nice to know they are ready to fight for the colors on their jersey.

Can you imagine what the game broadcast would have been like if Culhaine was still doing the production? This was not the picture Swain painted for us during the broadcast.
Thanks for sharing Shamrock.

Swain called UC Davis - Cal Poly about 10 times. When he didn't call them Cal Poly he called them Cal Davis.
Shamrock - thanks for the insights.

Culhaine would have been going out of his mind. Swain just, I don't know, maybe he just needs more games under his belt? We all seem to know the difference between Cal Poly and UC-Davis so I think the professional should do his homework and know as well.

Hey shamrock, since you have the plays in question on your lap top could you post them so we can all see. I'll side with Ed until I see different. That being said, we need to make the plays when we have an opportunity and not let the officials decide the game.

I do miss Cully's announcing he sometimes went overboard with the homerism, but the announcing on Sat was pitiful. I wouldnt mind USD going back to kvtk. I miss the days of Cully, Joe Van Goor, Layne Grindle and Jeff Culhain. Grindle and Jeff do a great job now for the husker broadcasts.
