This is a solid addition to the schedule for USD. There are rabbit droppings on the bunnyboard speculating about whether or not USD tried to schedule sdsu for that week or not.
I heard directly from Herbster that USD offered to play sdsu in Brookings for the same weekend USD now has scheduled with Air Force. sdsu turned the offer down. Direct quote from Herbster's lips, "sdsu has two big boosters that are telling them not to schedule USD in football."
I would love to see USD play sdsu again, but am more than happy to go to Air Force and get a nice pay check for the program as well as a great opportunity/experience.

Yeah, Sayler said the same there. There are two major boosters who don't want the game to happen. This is why I hate some boosters. They are costing the school some serious dough right now for the Bunnies, but yet they let personal feelings get in the way. Maybe those two boosters should pull whatever is up their butts out and stop being so anal. They need a good slap in the face right now. Sucks when boosters try and set your school back.

The irony of the situation, if true, is "major boosters" and "sdsu" used in the same sentence. SDSU has long been known as having a funding base that is a mile wide and an inch thick. The response from SDSU alumni after Bostic stepped up was, unfortunately for them, less than impressive. With that said USD still has to start an atheltic endowment campaign.

Am I wrong, but isn't the Howling pack an athletic endowment fund, or is that something that's completely different?

Am I wrong, but isn't the Howling pack an athletic endowment fund, or is that something that's completely different? I am not sure : my understanding is that Howling Pack goes to meet immediate needs of the Athletic Department. A scholarship endowment would collect money that continues to accumulate until a percentage of the total (ideally 4% annual withdrawl range to ensure it is sustainable) could be withdrawn each year to meet scholarship needs. The money would be invested in a diversified portfolio to theoretically grow over time. It would be a permanent benefit to the University.

My understanding, and it may be wrong, but the Howling Pack (which I am a member and encourage others to do the same) is a membership program that provides current year monetary support. If the numbers are high enough i believe some of the funds could be placed into an endowment. What we need to get established is a 10 to 15 million dollar endowment drive in which a % such funds (interest/returns) is used to fund scholarships, salaries and facility improvements. Mo Money Mo Money.
I encourage anyone that has questions to contact administration of the Howling Pack or the USD athletic department (I don't work for either but i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express about five weeks ago).

This is my comments to those boosters. If you are holding your University hostage that is actually quite lame. Whether it's to spite USD or whatever the reason it's quite selfish and can only work to be a hinerance in the long run. If SDSU wants the bragging rights in the State they need to prove it on the field. Whoever those boosters are, if you are preventing the game from being played than what you are saying is that by default USD is the better program. Refusing to play is cowardly.
I personally don't care if we play SDSU or not. I have no real reason to want to avoid them and I have no real reason to necessarily get overly excited to play them. I am a Coyote Fan first and I want a successfull program first. If that success comes any SDSU rivaly games play a very distant second or lower on my wish list. USD fans need to forget about SDSU because on the actual field of play (not on the hype meter) USD has been doing well and are currently ahead of where SDSU was in year three in the two most important sports, Mens Basketball and Football.
If I am USD I don't give in at this point one bit. The Yotes will probably get into the Missouri Valley Football Conference therefor forcing SDSU to play an equitable agreement.

Yeah, Sayler said the same there. There are two major boosters who don't want the game to happen. That's not accurate. There are a lot more than two boosters, major and minor, who don't want the game to happen. It's a complex issue and one that USD fans may never appreciate or understand. I think that most SDSU boosters realize that at some point play on the gridiron will resume but the sentiment is strong to stave that off as long as possible. There's just very little interest in such a game by many (my guess is most but it's only a guess) SDSU fans. And, while it seems true that the game will generate a lot of revenue, I don't believe many are convinced it will generate more revenue than what we're currently doing at Coughlin Alumni Stadium. For example, watch the attendance numbers for tomorrow's game. It's a three-day weekend and the Jacks are struggling mightily in football right now but I'll bet we'll still have reasonably good attendance (my prediction, at least 12,500 and likely 13,500 or more). So, under adverse circumstances, our attendance figures will continue to hold up and over time continue to increase.

Why are you more credible? Your know-it-all smugness is irritating. I want sdsu to succeed so USD can smear them on their best year.

Before seeing your reply, I added to my post. I hope I gave at least a little more explanation. I think it's probably a true statement that two boosters oppose the game. It's equally true that 25 and 50 and 100 boosters oppose the game. That's my point: there's little interest in the game right now. I think most SDSU boosters are willing, however, to let the athletic director's office and coaches make the decision when to play and most boosters will support the program when that decision is made. It's difficult to understand why that's so upsetting to some USD fans. Many USD fans are ambivalent about the game, too. USD's having a fabulous year in football and the Coyotes are doing it without a link to any other school. usdfbalum: I was wearing red when the U beat Minnesota and I was at Sallys after the game. It was a great celebration. Had nothing to do with SDSU. Coyote Fan has commented on this: he's enjoying USD's success and could give a rat's rear end (my words, not his...but I think that's his sentiment) about what SDSU is doing.

I know several players and they want to play. Even though some say they are not interested, my guess is the game would draw 25k plus (with available seating) along with a good viewership on TV. How many opponents would come into CAS and draw that now? Regardless of all that - I don't ultimately care if the two schools play. USD is finally committed to supporting their athletic department and are gaining steam. With or without sdsu on the schedule the USD program is improving. The gap has closed to a level that is tough to see. sdsu had a big gap and it is gone. Call me a traditionalist but I think SD is a GREAT state and we have one of the longest rivalries in all of college FB. We should continue the game as long as we have two viable teams. I know you (JackJD) actually root for USD at times, but reading the posts on bunnyboard makes me think your fans have zero respect for USD - and that will be a mistake.

I know you (JackJD) actually root for USD at times, but reading the posts on bunnyboard makes me think your fans have zero respect for USD - and that will be a mistake. I did not play football but was a Jackrabbit athlete in the old days (teammate and friend of USD track coach Dave Gottsleben). I went to many USD and SDSU football games as well as other sporting events. I don't doubt that many former players would like to see the contests start again. My comment which I think started our exchange was that more than two boosters oppose the game. That's a pretty common feeling among SDSU boosters. Is it the majority? Can't say as a provable fact but if I had to guess I'd say yes. My friend Yotemeal and I had a discussion like this some months ago. I suggested he read the short story "Howlers" in VJ Smith's Book "Jackrabbit Tales". It may give some insight into why I think the issue is complicated and the USD fans and SDSU fans just come from different places on the issue. I don't see how a football game between SDSU and USD can attract 25k...there's no stadium that could hold such a crowd but, more importantly, I don't see that kind of crowd assembling for the game. Perhaps some day but not in the near term. I'd be hard to convince that a game with USD today would out-draw a game in Coughlin against NDSU. Just my opinion. And right now the Jackrabbits have enjoyed the battle with the Bison -- current records suggest the Jack's streak may end but nobody's counting out SDSU going up to Fargo and getting another win. Added: This thread should probably return to it's original topic: great scheduling a game with Air Force. It's that kind of scheduling that attracts attention and attention brings in money for both athletics and academics. Good get.

Nothing like the feeling of being hopelessly dragged back into a USD-SDSU discussion. It's kind of like stepping into quicksand. No matter how much you try to get out of it and no matter how hard you fight it you are bound to just keep getting caught in it deeper and deeper.
I tend to want to believe facts before talk. Are SDSU fans interested in USD. Just look at the attendance numbers at Frost Arena on a Monday Night when USD came to town in Womens Basketball. I wonder how a regular game against another mid major opponent would have drawn in comparison. Was the crowd just there to watch or was the cheering just a bit more intense than a regular game. As much as SDSU fans want to think USD doesn't matter I saw a totally different picture of that before the rivalry was put on hold. It matters, and matters alot to the majority of Jackrabbit fans and the same is true for Coyote fans. Just because USD went to D1 a few years after Northern Colorado doesn't mean that the games against the Jacks still don't have major significance. Now that USD is good at football again the interest from the SDSU side is even moreso. Now even the most biased Jacks fan would likely think that the Jacks and Coyotes would probably have a very competitive game on the field.
Lets go to football and not forget that there would be an awful lot of red at the game if it was at Coughlin. I would think the low end would be 2,000 USD fans with a high end of about 10,000. More than likely it would be closer to 5,000. SDSU fans would likely be at minumum of 15,000. My estimation for a September date at 6:00PM would be about 22,000. I would say that the total attendance would be a new record and both fans bases would have alot to do with it. For one thing it would get endless media coverage leading up to it. The hype would be immense.

I will bet you a dinner at the place of your choice that USD vs sdsu, when it happens , will outdraw the most recent sdsu v ndsu game held at CAS. I will even wear an sdsu jersey and talk about nothing but the great jackrabbit players I faced while at USD.

usdfbalum,
I couldn't agree more. For one thing USD would bring more fans than NDSU did. SDSU fans would show up in bigger numbers as well. I don't think a SDSU fan would bet his/her house that the NDSU game would draw more.
