Wonder if they'll have it operating for the SD All Star game on the 9th. Anxious to see that board up and running.

Came across something interesting today and this seemed the most reasonable place to share. I went to the library on campus today looking for a quiet spot to study for my upcoming midterm (because grad school doesn't acknowledge summer) and wound up on the third floor surrounded by a bunch of books/documents on USD's history. Yearbooks dating back to 1903, ancient alumni directories, and a document from the early 70s (stamped as received by the USD library in 1973) containing a concept for the proposed USD DakotaDome: Click to enlarge. This is a cool looking design in my opinion but it's just really interesting to me to see these past concepts and how drastically different the end result was. The interior blueprints in this proposal looked quite similar to what we did end up with in the actual DakotaDome - bleachers mainly on one side with the concourse, pool underneath - but the exterior is so drastically different. I had never seen any pre-construction concepts for the Dome and definitely not any concepts that weren't actually domed structures. I found this to be very interesting and perhaps a few of you will as well.

Could not use the design due to the way the roof is sloped to the middle. The snow loads in the winter would have accumulated and caved the roof in. True story.

Does anyone know if there will be tours of the new arena in the next month? I'm more than ready to see this thing in person.

Just got an email this morning... Season ticket holders and HP members will be receiving invites soon to tour the new arena.

I'm curious why people believe the dome could be expanded to 14,000-15,000? The current East side has about 4,375 chairbacks and maybe 800-900 bleacher seats for a total of 5,275 tops. If you duplicate that on the other side, it's still less than 11,000. I know people like to compare the Dakota Dome to the UNI Dome, but the UNI is actually a larger structure. Just look at the number of seating rows they have compared to us. We have tops 35 rows and they have at least 45 rows. Even if we get very creative with the new west stands, we will still likely have fewer seats than the Alerus Center, which UND typically regards as too small for their future plans. We would have to expand to the North, and reinforce the roof with a new beam that could support the entire north side of the roof to allow for unobstructed viewing. That would take some serious $$$$.
On the flip side, I'm not sure we could draw much more than 12,000 for most games if we move outdoors. Besides D-Days and the XDSU game, there could be some pretty low draws late in the season. It will be interesting to see if state continues to have this problem with the new stadium.

It will be interesting to see if state continues to have this problem with the new stadium. It would take a lot of creativity and a ton of money to get to the 14-15k number. Getting to 12k by filling all areas around the student section might be the only reasonable expansion to the Dome. Expansion to the north doesn't even sound realistic.

I've caught wind that there is to be an open house for the Sanford Coyote Sports Center this coming Sunday from 7-8:30 PM. I'm ready to finally see this place in person.

I would think more than 12k would likely. If they go just over 10k for a sellout now there is room for more than 2000 seats above and around the student section. Somewhere the math isn't adding up.
