I think there is something to be said about giving the players the opportunity to play an Oregon for example. Yes, it's a likely loss, but it may be a draw for the program that the players will be able to step on the field of some well respected teams. Even in the face of a potential loss they can hold their heads high if they demonstrate that they are able to compete. It's not necessarily a negative.

Of course budget it important and that is why maybe the Yotes should play 3 FBS games a year instead of just one. Imagine the money that the program would receive for that. Of course they wouldn't be making the playoffs but that hasn't really been an option for USD football anyway so nothing lost but alot to be gained. Could you imagine the die hards and how happy they would be if they could see the Yotes play at California, at Nebraska and at Texas in the same year. That would be awesome. How much could be gained from that. Maybe a million or a million and a half. Why do you keep doing this? Why? Although there really isn't an "average" payday for playing an FBS Power 5 school, it's relatively safe to say it would be close to $400,000-500,000. From that you would subtract your travel costs which would probably exceed $100,000, giving the program a net of close to $300,000. From that amount, the AD now needs to schedule a team to come play at our house. That costs somewhere around $50,000.
Now the goal is to sign home and home agreements with other FCS teams like we did with Weber State. Although no money exchanged hands, as it is a home and home, it doesn't negate the cost associated with traveling to your FCS opponent. In the case of Weber State, chartering a flight, 75 motel rooms, meals, buses, etc and your out $75,000. The trade off is you get them at home next year and get the gate receipts. Hopefully you get enough to cover travel costs. Every FCS team I'm aware of tries to play at least one FBS team for the reasons I gave, even the vaunted NDSU Bison. Everyone has budgets to meet.
The only way I know to avoid this is by having a growing and strong Howling Pack that can funnel money to the program. But we don't have that luxury yet, but if I was AD, it would be my goal.
One last thought, a loss to an FBS team doesn't hurt you in playoff selection. Tough RPI schedules enhances, not hurts, your chances to make the playoffs. And not to fight, but the boosters that a previous poster said wants to play FBS schools is not correct. Playing one is real life. More than that, and you start risking injury, and no one wants to see that

It certainly helps the budget this year that Cal had to buy out the full game contract of $500k and New Mexico will be paying us $375k.

If it is the full amount, and New Mexico actually is our opponent and paying that well then this will be a very fortunate situation for our program. I believe the full amount of the Cal game was closer to 600k than 500k, which coupled with the rumored 375k comes out to around 900k for our program to play one game that we even stand a chance of winning (perhaps slim, but not the near zero chance we had against Cal).

I don't know what the Cal payoff was but maybe it was $600,000 and they subtract out estimated travel costs? Just a thought. Either way, a great deal for us.

Cal cancelling on us worked out pretty well. Enough extra cash to pay a large portion of our staff salaries and a good replacement game.

Any speculation on how much we will get paid for a game like this?

Per Jay Elsen we are receiving $500,000 buyout from Cal and $375,000 from New Mexico.
