I was talking to one of the USD coaches about recruiting in general. It is a fascinating world, kind of like the wild, wild, west. These coaches are out on the circuit at these tournaments all over the country, rubbing elbows, swapping stories, making connections. It's hard for schools like USD to compete with the big boys. The big boys are taking private jets from place to place, we're driving rental cars. There is a lot of time spent away from the family out on the road scouting. It was fascinating to me because it is just so much different than football recruiting which I have seen up close.
Anytime somebody chimes in and says, "we just need to get better players, more athletic, etc". It just ain't as easy as you might think.

Looks like Rashawn Thomas may not be committed to the Yotes program yet. According to his Twitter account, he is at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, presumably for a visit. They were one of 5 D1 teams to offer.
Rashawn Thomas 2⃣5⃣ þ@Sobeastly_25 5h Next stop Texas A&M Corpus Christi..

Two future Yotes were named to the large class all-state basketball team in OK. Rico Thompson, the 6-1 PG and 5-11 PG Tevin Foster. Foster is a FB recruit.......maybe a walk-on to the BB team???
Rashawn Thomas, who also has an offer from the Yotes, was named as well.
Congrats guys!!!!

From Jeremy Hoeck last night:
"Tavian Pomlee, 6-5 F, from Iowa Western CC tweets that he is headed to USD. Reivers went 32-3 and lost in Elite 8 of juco national tourn."
"Tavian Pomlee averaged 13 pts, 5.5 rebs, 1.8 assists per game as a sophomore at Iowa Western CC. Would have 2 seasons with USD."
We found good success with another transfer from that school.....Charlie Westbrook, hope Pomlee has similar athleticism

Rico Thompson also tweeted about signing day and the Yotes.
It would appear we are on the outside looking in on Thomas.

From Mick Garry's Blog: mgarryargus.tumblr.com/post/47719357517/coach-morris-talks-about-pomleeJim Morris, longtime basketball coach at Iowa Western, has seen quite a few really good basketball players go through his program. Some of them have ended up at USD, including men’s assistant coach Joey James. Last week, Tavian Pomlee, a 6-5, 206-pound forward, verbally committed to the Coyotes and will sign next week. Pomlee follows Charlie Westbrook, who played two years for the Coyotes before moving on to a career in Europe. Though they’re roughly the same size, Pomlee, who averaged more than 13 points and nearly six rebounds for Iowa Western, is a different kind of player than Westbrook, says Coach Morris. “He’s really an athletic guy, really put together really well,” Morris said. “Offensively, he’s primarily a shooter. You’re going to see one or two dribbles, then a power forward move — he’s not a slasher like Charlie was. He’s a straight-up shooter who plays hard and makes a lot of baskets.” Pomlee, who was getting mid-major consideration coming out of high school in Davenport, Iowa, started slow but finished strong with Iowa Western, which went 32-3 this past season. “He was first-team all-region, which is pretty hard to do around here because of all the good basketball players,” Morris said. “He’s a good kid — he really came on strong for us his sophomore season.”

I don't know where the "roughly the same size" as Charlie Westbrook came from. Looking at this film: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o5uEU6NllUwhich is from Tavian's HS days, he is considerably larger than Charlie. Charlie couldn't have been more than 6'2". I realize Boots still doesn't have the "great" size we want, but he is definitely getting longer and more athletic. These are the types of players we need if he is going to continue to run the zone defense.

We lose 4 scholarship players in Boots, Myles, Bartling and Tecker. We added Sparks, Thompson and Pomlee. Rashawn Thomas was mentioned but that is not going to happen. Are we going to hold onto that scholarship for next year? I do know a transfer recruit that the team really wanted was in town last week for a visit. Any word on who it was? Summit type players from the recruiting area that would fit the bill include: Jake White (WSU), Nick Arenz (GB) and Paul Jesperson (UVA).

I've heard rumblings of Jake White, but nothing solid.

I would guess that Tecker would get to retain his scholarship in exchange for helping out with the team. That is what usually happens when an athlete is unable to finish their playing career.

That is called a medical hardship, but the ability to offer another scholarship to a new player is then available.

A medical hardship? Isn't that where the athlete missed almost a whole year due to injury or illness and applies for a hardship and gets an extra year to participate?
So your telling me that Tecker is hurt in basketball at USD and decides against playing his senior year. His school is paid for through his junior year and then all of a sudden they take his scholarship away and he has to pay full tuition? Highly doubtful. In almost all situations like this, as long as they help out and have a roll with the team, they keep their scholarship.

I think what he meant is that the team can have an extra scholarship over the limit for hardship. The ncaa limits men basketball to 13 scholarships. The team is at 13 with Tecker. I do not know the rule nor do I know if it is allowed but I believe this is what he meant. I would think they could find some money for Tecker via other avenues that do not constitute an athletic scholarship. Some schools have scholarships for student managers and since not a player on roster doesn't count against 13 scholarship cap.
