We need more depth. Half of our problem is we try to play 6 guys all game and we are tired at the end. Thus far the zone has not been effective. The guards can rotate fast enough or contain penetration and we dont have a shot blocking big man. We need to be able to rotate 8-9 guys so we can keep fresh legs in the game. We can use a zone as a diffent look on defense but that definitley shouldnt be the primary defense we use. Not to mention that it is much harder to rebound out of a zone.

I do like the zone in spot situations or against certain teams in the summit. However, Boots has run that ugly, crappy zone for entire games without entering a man to man defense once. Its pathetic to be frank. The Omaha game and SDSU games at home were prime examples of games when some spot man to man defense was needed. If you are that unconfident in running a man to man defense and do not have the ability to coach a team into running it, you do not belong in division I coaching.

Zones are used to hide players with slow foot speed and we like to recruit tall guards also 6'6" to 6'8" outside shooting forwards.

verbalcommits.com/schools/south-dakotaHow many scholarships will USD have for the upcoming year. The site above says you have 8 open offers out but have no open scholarships . They must have an error in their data base.

I don't know the details on scholarships allowed or the rules. But the site you listed has Tavian Pomlee as both a Freshman and a Junior, which obviously is double counting (he's a JR JUCO transfer). Plus the SRs (Gruis, Rowson), my uneducated guess is we have 3-4 scholarships available, but I will wait for the experts to chime in.

No scholarships available for 2013-14, last I heard... So the open offers must be for walk on/non scholarship positions, is that correct?

Should be at least 2.

You have to think both Gruis and Rowson are on full scholarships, which leads to Cousin Eddie's 2. I'm curious how the scholarships are split amongst the rest of the team. A team can have 13 full scholarship players. We have 16 players listed on our roster, and I am going out on a limb and saying Foley and Voleskey are not on scholarship. Would guess Vlad is the other non scholarship player? Can anyone confirm that?
Also, if no one else noticed, we are jammed up at the guard position and thin at PF/C. Just being realistic here, but with a coaching change and a guard jam up, would not be shcoked if we lose a guard in some way, shape, or form in the next year to open up a 3rd scholarship. These things have a way of working themselves out.

That, I believe, is also true for FBS football but is not the case for FCS football.

Perfect, that is what I had thought but was not positive. In that case, we have 2 available for next year as of now. Hopefully one or both of those will be put towards a big man.

Same recruiting strategy, may continue to have trouble enticing a big man.

Joey James was interviewed by Terry V in his regular podcast. On there he said that USD had two scholarships this year, but that we already had one guy that was committed. That only leaves one more scholarship to fill right now. He indicated that the commit was solid and the coaching change did not sway him - his commitment was to USD, not necessarily a coach. These are, of course, the words of Coach James, so take it for what it is worth.
James also doesn't sound fully committed to continuing the matchup zone. Said he wants to move to man-to-man as the primary.
Sounds very high on Trey Norris, Adam Thoseby, and Bos.
