Mick's column was spot on!
Cousin Eddie is right about next year's expectations/challenges. I'm looking forward to the development of the Freshmen. I thought Simpson, Peterson really stepped in and played beyond their years during the course of the season, but were a little less agressive in the SLT.
There are a number of areas for improvement to the upside, Hagedorn, Armstrong, Jech?, this year's red shirts, and the new Freshmen. Only glaring area, is replacing Flack and inside presence, but I think we have the resources and a great coaching staff to develop.

Winners all around, Coyotes Summit League Champions, Coach Smith, highly sought after Coach of the Year, the administration for swiping COY's from other schools and defending the same (Jeremy Hoeck tweeted this very eloquently)!!
Another great day to be a Coyote fan, like everyday.

Yeah but most of your fans are wrong most of the time and way too big on themselves. You guys were going to beat Notre Dame a while back in Frost and that didn't happen either. To have very unrealistic expectations I guess is alright and if you keep doing that year after year after year bunny fans could be right someday It would be more realistic to say we're going to work real hard and try to win a conference championship someday again! Ok I'll bite, since you guys probably miss me. Let's play this game. I'll start with wbb and do a quick overview so I can go through why SDSU fans have "arrogant" expectations compared to usd fans. It's similar to why NDSU fans are how they are about their football team. For women's basketball, there is no reason to call people thinking a sweet 16 run was possible or even likely when you return all your starters from a team that was a shot away from making it was arrogant or unreasonable. Any other fan base in the same situation would have thought the same thing. The vast majority of that team was coming back with the added tournament experience. To have less of an aspiration would be silly. It has nothing to do with disrespecting the rest of the Summit League. As for continually being considered a favorite, let's look at some numbers shall we. Over the last ten years 50% of the time the regular season champ has been SDSU. The last three years they have been outside of first place by one game twice and two games once. They almost never miss the big dance and have a couple of wins there. So yeah, they by far have the strongest pedigree in the league and will annually be in the conversation of the favorite. The yotes are still building their pedigree, and generally in the conversation of best teams in the Summit, but need to win the tourney and win in the big dance. The main reason for the angst towards SDSU fans attitudes started with wbb because it's the first big sport the yotes started to be good in on a regular basis and have had the most success in. We consider our program better than yours, because in all measurable stats it is. We have more regular season titles, more SLT titles, and more wins in the big dance. Which irritates you guys to no end, cause you consider your program as equal or even better. Which you should, other wise you don't have a competitive bone in your body and I don't know why you bother being a fan. Realistically though SDSU has much more pedigree behind it. Don't try to smirk at another program for having expectations that generally have the stats to back it up. If anything I wonder why your expectations aren't similarly high. All our other main sports have had much much more success than yours have. Football and mbb aren't close right now. You had a good year this year, and seem primed to have a good year next year (possibly in both). You need to do it with regularity though to even have the same type of expectations as SDSU fans do. One good season in mbb and shouting "we've arrived" doesn't really do it. Especially after how long you have sucked. Just is what it is. SDSU fans don't have the same expectations or attitude as bison fans yet in football because they have a lot more accomplishments than we have. But our programs getting better every year is growing our fans expectations and pride growing every year with it, which is making the rivalry more and more contentious every year. Especially when we get knocked out of the playoffs by them continually. I totally get where you guys are coming from with hating us, it's the same reason a lot of SDSU fans hate NDSU more than the yotes, almost certainly in football and in basketball as well to an extent. The one team that has beaten us in the games that really matter (playoffs, mbb SLT) has been NDSU, and that really grinds on you after a while. Oh, and in talking to a buddy who is a bison fan I'm pretty sure the biggest part of the xDSU fans attitudes that bothers the UxDs is how they view the rivalry. Overall across all sports, SDSU fans want to win against the bison more than they don't want to lose because they are more proud of winning against NDSU than they are embarrassed by losing. But against usd, SDSU fans are more worried about not losing instead of winning, because losing to the yotes is just embarrassing. We don't view your athletics as being on our level yet, mostly because in the big three you aren't. Sure you're getting better, but you add being newer to DI (it's embarrassing to lose to a team just out of transition) as well as how bad you were in the recent past, well, it's embarrassing to lose to that. tldr Judging by the responses, thumper76 must have been showing off all that state college 'schoolin'

Jacks fans make me laugh, I have no inside information on Coach Smith, but I can assure of one thing, the chances of the Coyotes having a down year in the next couple of years will not be a factor, at all in his decision. Did you even watch the Summit League this year?
Coach Smith is a great coach, and the reward for great coaching is you get offers. I wish him the best, he deserves it. I hope he stays because he has built us a championship team, but if he moves on, I have every confidence we will have a lot of great candidates rushing to get their names in to Herbster.

Great season for the Yotes! Didn't play very well in the 2nd half tonight or we might not be in reflection mode just yet, but there is a lot of pride to have this year. We not only firmly established ourselves in the Summit League this year, WE WON THE SUMMIT LEAGUE. USD basketball has finally and completely arrived in this D1 era, and we will be the team to beat in the Summit for at least the next two years. We are Summit League Champions, and will be the team to beat! That's a fact! Considering where we started, that makes this season a tremendous success. Thanks to Coach Smith, Tyler Flack and all the guys. Fun to watch, can't wait 'til next year! Best of luck to Tyler in all future endeavors, it was a pleasure watching your time as a Yote! Hat tip to the Daves and Mr Abbott for their efforts in building this program.

Agree with Yotes, the Coyotes have arrived and the Summit League has been served.
Every season is a new chapter, but I fully expect tne Coyotes to start where we left off, Summit League Champions, taking all comers, and looking to win 3 games in March.
Bright future indeed, I think we may have some freshmen to help replace Flack, if not, Hagedorn, Jech, Sparks and experienced youth will likely do the trick.
Go Yotes, proud of this team!

Enjoying first live SLT.
Tonight's gonna be a lot of fun! State is hot, they have a good crowd, but I would much rather be the Coyotes than the Jacks (as always, I guess) at this point. Remember early in D1, when we were looking at our roster and talking about the "eye test" for athleticism was missing. Well it's not now, and it is clear we have the athletes to outlast anyone in the field.
I'm expecting our aggressiveness to be higher (especially) on offense, primarily because we are young and had a number of players playing in the touney for the first time. Our freshmen in particular who have played all year with aggression, seemed a little tentative on Saturday.
The other thing that is noticeable is our defense, really solid. Even though, WIU stayed with us, they hit some late on the shot clock 3s and often contested 3s. All I can say is State better hope Telli can do the same as Covington, or they may have a tough time hanging with us.
Lets go Yotes, and just like Mooney said in the Argus, "Pressure is a Privilege!"

Best short term solution for more lower bowl seating for the Yotes is to have SDST lose their opening round games. ...and long term, Coyotes just keep winning!! The more Coyotes success, the less Jacks fans, they will save their money for Equestrian or the hog sale at Frost.

Liked the article on Tyler Stoll, another nice job by Jeremy.
I have always enjoyed Mick's coverage, I don't quite understand the knock on him personally.
The Argus Leader, however, as it relates to college sports coverage (which is all I would read from them) is really puzzling. I can't believe it makes business sense, to not cover both D1 college sports with equal devotion. Two markets are better than one, you would think that would be a basic profit-driven approach. I'm not in the newspaper business (or digital media, more accurately), so I'm sure I'm missing the data about how sports fans are not the buying market, or something. But, if the answer to USD sports fans is that we need to read, click-on more Argus Leader articles, etc. to get more Coyote coverage, I think that is, as my father would say, 'a** backwards'. Who's selling the product, and who is buying? It's hard to get emotional about the dying newspaper business, if you can't figure out the basics.
That being said, I have and would encourage others to join the Coyote chats, and click on articles, it can't hurt. However, if the Argus Leader doesn't get it right, it's nice to know we have P&D and other choices.

Is Mooney even our MVP? I think Flack has a very good argument for that title. Will there be anyone on the All-Newcomer team that isn't a Coyote? If Flack didn't miss a month I'd say he's the team MVP but that honor has to go with Mooney. Flack has more of an all-around game. We're very lucky to have both of them. Herein lies the reason, it won't be a Yote that wins SL MVP, we have 2 candidates, that play well together. Saturday's game tells you all you need to know, 9 players scored, 5 in double figures, and 43 bench points, you won't be scoring MVP points that way. Daum will likely win it, and he's a great player!! No argument here.

Excellent article.
I had the opportunity when I attended USD to share an apartment with an artist and an athlete and another Business school major. It was a window into the student lives of athletes and the art world, that left an impression on me. Focusing on your major and having fun are definitely high priorities for all college students, I get that, but look at those around you like artists, athletes, and honor students, who are putting in long hours and many also getting a great education at a high level. Perhaps you can find a way to add to your college experience by taking in a great performance in theater or in athletics, or many of the other extracurricular activities the University offers. It may just change your life.
A dad, with college students, sorry for the rant...
Thanks Miles!

The window of opportunity...slammed shut. Don't care who the XDSU's consider their rivals, I will forever enjoy the Yotes taking them down. Even though the Coyotes MBB is chasing the Summit League Conference title and the Jacks are chasing a spot in the Summit League tournament, it didn't reduce the fun of Saturday's win!! Fight, South Dakota! Because SDSU have never won the Summit League regular season title, or SL tournament, or been to the basketball NCAA's, Men or Women, or won a couple NCAA basketball tournament games (Women), or had a program ranked top 25 at the highest level nationally (Women, Wrestling). Seriously, congrats on finally putting a Men's basketball team on the court that can compete, but you may want to do a quick review of history. Oh, and you may want to take a second look at past history. Being a top seed at the SLT and going to the NCAA are two different things. And when you have two teams (IPFW and SDSU) who both have not lived up to expectations but have serious talent on the floor, talent that are capable of going off on you; this could very well be the year a mid to lower seed comes from no where to win the NCAA bid. And on the Women's side? SDSU are still the favorite this year, will be next year, and the year after that. Get used to it, AJ and his band of top 100 recruits aren't going anywhere. "Yesterday, all my troubles (COYOTES!!) seemed so far away, now it looks as though they're here to stay (COYOTES!!), Oh, I believe in yesterday. Yesterday, love (Summit League) was such an easy game to play, Now, I need a place to hide away, Oh, I believe in yesterday."

Should I warn Thumper about smack in a non-smack thread? Nah, we run a better place here than they do over on the Bunny Board. Thumper, and all State fans, should be getting salty. SDSU's grip on this D-1 move is all but gone. The last piece USD needs to draw even is to win in football and that will come in short order. They all know it, the entire conference knows Coyote football is on the rise, yet rabbit fans refuse to see it. Oh well, we took the WBB mantle from them. We've passed them in MBB this year. Track & field, forget about it, not even close at this point. Softball, soccer, go right down the list and USD has either pulled even or passed SDSU by. Only two pieces of the puzzle left, a Summit basketball title, and a win in football with a trip to the playoffs, which will happen in short order. The Rabbit reign was short lived, I hope they enjoyed it while it lasted.
