I am sure the new guy won't require a multiyear contract…

I'm not sure I agree with everyone calling this a lateral move, salary aside.
As far as basketball, the Horizon League is absolutely a step up from the Summit. Not saying we can't build this conference up, but the Horizon has a history of getting multiple bids to the dance, the importance of which cannot be overstated.
It's also easier to boost your RPI when your conference contains teams with higher RPIs. Which they do.
It's a big blow to the conference and a bigger blow to the Jacks, but not a shocker to me. I think they will continue to be a good team, and maybe dodged a bullet in terms of pay, but now must roll the dice on a coach.

I heard rumors from rabbit fans even before the SLT that Daum was possibly looking to go Big10 or Big12.

Look historically, I'm sure the Horizon ranks higher most of the time. It is a league held in higher regard than the Summit, and perhaps the tides are shifting, but historically it has been a bit ahead of the Summit and no stranger to sending a couple teams to the tournament (I'm guessing on that one without doing research).

Had to check on this: Horizon League has sent just one team to the tournament the past six years, but it's worth noting (and I forgot myself) that Butler was in the Horizon when they had consecutive NCAA runner ups. Since 2000 they've been a two-bid league twice. Not as good as I remember that conference being, but still that slight step above the Summit League right now.

Here is the Horizon League's RPI 2007-2016 compared with the Summit League's: --------Horizon---Summit 2007--12---------22 2008--11---------22 2009--12---------26 2010--12---------24 2011--12---------21 2012--13---------16 2013--12---------19 2014--14---------18 2015--17---------21 2016--18---------11 This year is the only example of the Summit League having a higher RPI than the Horizon. We may be able to sustain some momentum off of that, but I think we need more than one year to prove that we are consistently on-par with the Horizon. I hope that happens, but right now they have a better reputation overall.

Let's not forget that the Summit was not very good and not very stable before the Dakota schools became a part of it. The Horizon has weakened over the past 5 years and the Summit has gotten much better. What was before is not currently. NDSU, SDSU, USD, Denver, UNO all new and strong additions. Centenary, UMKC and Southern Utah all good substractions.

You asked me to explain why the Horizon's RPI was lower than the Summit's THIS YEAR in order to "make my case" why I feel the Horizon is a better-perceived league. I feel I have done so with the data presented above. If you want me to provide rolling averages for any time-frame you request, I will. The only period that it would indicate otherwise would be a one-year average. Trust me, I want the Summit League to be better-perceived than the Horizon. Maybe we could get Valpo back. I think the last two years have been lower than their standard. I think 2012 and 2016 were great years for the Summit, but let's pump the breaks on declaring our league a consistent top 15 league, like the Horizon has been. Give it some time.
