This poll should surprise no one. However, this is the year we take down the dauminator in SF before he heads off to Wisconsin. This is coming from an SDSU fan but SDSU and USD are about a coin flip. USD won 10 of their last 13 conference games last year with a split with SDSU(in those 13 games). SDSU won 10 of their last 13 games with a 2 point loss @ USD in there. SDSU did beat USD by 3 in SF. I know this doesn't include the whole conference season but it took a while for T.J. to figure things out. SDSU loses only Orris that played much. USD only loses Flack and Dickerson so they don't lose much either. I expect 3 really tough competitive games between these two teams this season. Not going to argue with this post, and I am in the belief that SDSU will finish well above .500 in the Summit League this year with TJ in his 2nd year at the helm. It will provide for a lot of excitement in South Dakota. I'm also expecting, like last year, that the Coyotes will be an improved team, year over year, it's going to be fun!

Did not realize that things were that nip and tuck between the two squads the last half of the season. Probably end up being the usual Yote win in Verm, the usual Jack win in Brookings and then wait for an epic clash in Sioux Falls. I would think that no other conference team would have the audacity to rain on that parade, would they? Here's hoping anyway.

In my football email this morning I noticed at the bottom that there will be a "Madness" event at the SCSC on November 2. Something about a slam dunk contest, scrimmage, and three point contests. Both teams will be involved.

www.goyotes.com/news/2017/10/26/mens-basketball-season-preview.aspxI reposted this link from the articles thread. It appears that there is still no indication of who will end up red shirting if anyone. I have to imagine some of the players will or will have to based on reaching the max active roster size. It is interesting that Fuller may see time at Center. That would be an interesting small lineup to see how it would function. I wonder if Fuller can play the 5 at the same time Hagedorn would play a stretch 4. Some interesting lineup senarios. The Yotes really didn't come into their own last year until the game in Fargo where a switch was flipped. They weren't bad before but they grew up as a team during that game. Hopefully this year we will see the team that finished the conference season all year this year. I have a feeling we will really see some improvement with the returning players.

You do realize Flack was 6’6” right? Pretty sure I said that Fuller would be looked at to fill Flack’s place when he announced he would transfer here.

I expected Fuller to fill in for Flack, but reading that preview I'm discouraged to see Smith say that Fuller can play the 3 or 4, and maybe a little 5. I thought this guy was going to be 5 by default. Sounds like we still don't have a real answer at the 5 unless Hagedoorn or Jech come into their own.

I would not have guessed Flack was only 6'6". On last years roster page he is listed at 6'7". I don't recall ever looking at his listed height but that is a bit surprising to me. He certainly played bigger then that. I don't know enough about Fuller but 6'6" is 6'6" and that size at center is certainly indicative of a smaller lineup.
There is always a trade off for everything. What is given up in size is often made up for in athleticism elsewhere on the court. I kind of like the small lineup but whatever the choice is I just like to see talent and basketball IQ regardless of size or position. My feeling this year is that Mooney averages over 18 points per game.

Personally, I think we are getting in a little too deep when trying to distinguish the difference between a 4 or a 5 on this roster. There really is none, they will be asked to do the same things on the court. Any number of our bigs in the rotation can step outside the 3 point line with the exception of Sparks and Prevost most likely. Slapping 1-5 labels or expectations on players in the system Smith uses is really irrelevant. Tre Burnette played the 5 for us at times a few years ago.... We will be very deep an can play any style and tempo. I cannot wait to see what Simpson can do when given the keys to the car this year.

I listened to Matt Mooney during the media day press conference and loved what I heard. First he says he doesn't pay attention to preseason polls or something like that. Then he says he is tired of hearing about South Dakota State and mentioned that no one picked them first in their poll. He says that "we feel disrespected". Thank you for saying that Matt.
I believe that when a team is picked first in a poll that is when the poll should be ignored. When you feel like you are disrespected you are going to have a chip on your shoulder and if everyone thinks like Matt does they are going to have something to prove even on top of the disappointment of not making the NCAA tourney last year. This team should have plenty of motivation.
Coach Smith did not give any indication if anyone would red shirt and just said that the freshman were expected to make big contributions to the program. Whether that means this year or not, who knows. He said that Umude is all arms and legs kind of like Gumby.

Need to look no further than last year to see how much preseason polls matter.

well if the coyotes have a little extra motivation then maybe they do matter.

Just read the pre-season rankings/write-up from The Athletic. It looks like we match up pretty well with these guys. Hahaha - 4 Freshman starting - they don't stand a chance...

And their lone upperclassman might end up being suspended, due to his serial tripping of opponents.

The 2017-18 season is just starting and we are already being projected as a 15th seed vs Wichita St in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This is complete nonsense... we will be a much higher seed than 15th! www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology
