Georgia now has an opening as they fired their coach. I don't know if Smith would be a candidate there but just another spot for a coach to fill.

You're acting like he can't wait to get out of here. I don't think is it's really too bad a gig right now. And yes, I do realize he will eventually be moving on.

Big question marks on who will still be with the team next year...
Mooney could transfer... Smith could be gone... and if he leaves, what will his new recruits do? With the new transfer rules likely coming, everyone could bail.
There will no longer be any school loyalty.
We might have to come to grips with the idea the cupboard could be bare and we will be starting over again next year...
Thoughts?

My thoughts are I wont worry about it too much. The same questions could be asked at any mid-major school.

I think if some news comes out it's one thing to talk about it but living in a world of hypotheticals with this topic could get very toxic in a big hurry. For any school. I would assume everyone is staying until there is a source stating otherwise.

It is kind of sobering thinking about the possibilities of potential losses to coaches or players but I believe in a coaches or players freedom to do what they want. Any rule that allows choices is one I like even if my routing interests might be hurt by it.

The proposed transfer rule could go either way for us. I don't think it's worth worrying about unless it's put into place, and after we see how it changes the game.
It's no secret that Smith won't be here much longer. Maybe he's done now, maybe he doesn't get the right opportunity and waits out the coaching carousel at his healthy USD program. Time will tell.
Mooney is absolutely good enough to grad transfer to the power 5. So is Daum. We really can't go down this worrying path every time we have a good 5th year senior.

Daum could transfer...Otz could be gone...and if he leaves takes Jenkins with him. What happens, happens and I'll continue to root for the name on the front of the jersey and appreciate the names on the back. These kids develop friendships and I don't think most are all that mercenary.

Although likely I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that Smith won't be here 5 years from now. We can't just assume he is going to stay but we also can't just assume he is going to go either. If I had to bet on it I would say he is here one more year and then goes. That is just a shot in the dark guess but I think he may want to see the Mooney class through before he would accept less than a really good job.

We might have to come to grips with the idea the cupboard could be bare and we will be starting over again next year... Thoughts? I've always wondered where these transfer rumors come from. Other than the fact that Mooney has the talent to play at a P5 school, is there something that leads people to believe he is leaving or did I miss something? I could see him transferring if Smith got a job at a P5 school, but outside of that I don't see it happening. He seems to really enjoy everything about USD and the program based on all his interviews, unless he is feeding us all a bunch of BS, which I highly doubt. Other than the possibility of Smith leaving, why would he transfer? To me, he seems like a loyal, highly driven kid who doesn't let unfinished business go unfinished, and wants to be the guy who leads this program to its first NCAA tourney. I think the biggest question mark is consistency with this team. Defensively, you know everyone is going to GATA (outside the last 2 games). Outside of Mooney, you don't know what you're going to get offensively from these guys, which is one of Smith's biggest flaws. This offense gets too stagnant at times, and when it does we all pray Mooney catches fire to carry us through. Can we get consistent scoring from Simpson, TBM, Armstrong and even Hagedorn to an extent? We also need Prevost to step up next year as we only have 1 true big man coming back in Hags. Hopefully we can get a big JUCO or grad transfer for more depth now that Sparks and Fuller are gone.
