Reported attendance at the game last night was 2,144. It would be great if we could get around 4,000 (or more) at the game Thursday. I doubt MSU would be expecting an environment like that. I was watching the Toledo- MSU game last night with some people who work in athletic administration and they were rooting hard for Michigan State because they thought playing a school with that name recognition would boost attendance. Hope they're right!

It would definitely make a difference for OUR team. I wouldn't count on shocking the Spartans with a big crowd, though. In the Big Ten there are a number of programs that top the charts in women's basketball attendance. Granted, they are typically playing in larger gyms, so it's a different environment. Ryun Williams commented in the post-game how surprised he was at how LOUD it was in the SCSC.... MSU played two true road games against mid-majors this year: East Tennessee State (Attendance 1,100) and Detroit Mercy (Attendance 817). So they may very well be surprised by the environment. I doubt they will under-estimate the team, though. They were almost just eliminated by Toledo at home.

I am not sure anyone in the NIT field should be considered a favorite coming to the SCSC but MSU is likely one of the few teams that can test that notion. It should be a good one but the wave of home court helps the Yotes to a 67-58 win.

Does anybody know how hosts are decided? Did we have to outbid Michigan State? Or is there some seeding that helps us out?

Believe it is a bidding process. But lots of tickets available according to the seat map. Corners largely unsold and those are excellent seats.

The north sections are 95% full (sections 112-114), the south sections are 80-90% full, you can get pretty close in section 105 behind the MSU bench. The corners are only 20-30% full. Ends are empty. That's gotta be close to 3k already, right? I'll guess there are more walk-ups than a typical game, with last-minute additions. Ill guess we end up with 3,000-3,500. Hopefully more, but 3k in Red Square/The Den can be VERY loud.

Does anybody know how hosts are decided? Did we have to outbid Michigan State? Or is there some seeding that helps us out? From the WNIT website: www.womensnit.com/event-info1.htmlSupposedly they use all of these factors, but in practice it appears that the bid trumps everything. Michigan State has a higher average attendance and ranking/seeding, and yet we were selected even prior to MSU playing their 2nd round game. I think we have shown good middle-round attendance in the past, where P5 schools usually show up poorly in the WNIT early/middle rounds. I don't know if that is a factor or not.

Also, I found this on their website: Even though we only drew 1,176 for round 1, and 2,089 for the second, our revenue had to far exceed the hosting fee for those games. That probably helps put together competitive bids for later rounds. It also might explain why we sometimes lose the bid in the second round to a P5 school like Minnesota or Iowa. (or Northern Colorado? ) We don't have the ability to provide a competitive bid until the 3rd Round.

^^ A good synopsis on the game. I like her comments at the end of the interview about P5/mid majors:
Q: Has this been a good reminder for your team, to not let the disappointment of the SLT overshadow what was a tremendous year and a tremendous basketball team? Just re-establish in everybody's minds who you are and what you're all about?
A: I think it's interesting what you are seeing right now in the NCAA tournament is quite a few upsets. Well, what those upsets are is usually mid-major teams knocking off some Power-5 or Power-6 opponent. On both sides, men's and women's basketball, the selection committee opted, at least this year, to take more of those Power-5 schools that are in the middle-range of their conference, rather than mid-majors. What's fun to watch, from our standpoint, are some of those upsets.
But at the same time, we have the same opportunity to do that same thing now. And it is the "precious present" and it is a great opportunity. If you look at the list of schools that are hosting games right now in the WNIT: It's Indiana, Kansas State, Alabama, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, ..... And the University of South Dakota. That's pretty neat.
I took a picture of Michigan State's home floor last night, while I'm watching film, And then I took a picture of our floor, and sent it to our administration (with the caption) "How cool is this? They're coming here." We're really blessed, because we are at an institution where we have the support of our administration and our community. We're really looking forward to Thursday night, and we anticipate a great crowd.

It was my understanding on Sunday even before we won that we would be hosting due to facility availability, or lack of, at both Toledo and Michigan State. Good break for us if that info is correct. I also heard that a team has to travel at least once sometime during the tourney, but I don't know what would happen in the case of two teams meeting up and neither had hit the road for a game yet.

Part of the equation for deciding who hosts is the fans in attendance. If we win this game against Michigan State, our next opponent could very well be New Mexico. They have to win tonight, and then one more game, but that would put them in our sitgts. Because they play in The Pit, and there are no professional sports in Albuquerque, they draw a lot of fans for both men’s and women’s basketball. They also have promotions to try to increase their attendance - recently they had a $5 per seat promotion for a game. We need to combat that by filling the stands Thursday night. The coaches should get the other athletes to come out. When you have the football players and the men’s basketball players come out to cheer for the ladies, other students follow. Spread the word!

Great point on the other sports teams. They should be able to get at least 200 other athletes at the game if not more. The student section turnout was rather poor the first two games. I think that Michigan State coming to town will create some excitement amongst the students. Also, now that the state high school basketball championships are finished, they should be able to draw a lot of high school kids as well. The game against Oregon a couple of years ago was once of the coolest events I've ever attended at USD.

Looks like I should have waited to get my seats! I assume the season ticket holders had first option on their seats until now. If you look at the seat map there are now some really good seats available in the middle sections. Really, there aren't many bad seats, though.

When we ran to the WNIT title I was buying up those prime season ticket holder seats. It wasn't until the Oregon game that I had to count on my regular seats. Plenty of people can't/aren't willing to get to Vermillion for a weekday game. I know I won't be making the trip unless it's for the title game.
