Good news is (I hope) that his decision isn't final! Hopefully he decides to stay!!

I guess we’ll find out how good of a recruiter Lee is right away.

I really don't think this was the most opportune thing to do, why risk alienating your teammates, but then I think Twitter, in general, is stupid. Add me to the list of crabby, old guys who are out of touch with today's social media and then ask me if I care. I also wonder if Matt is going to find a better situation out there where he's "the man" on a very strong team that has a good chance of making waves next season.

I'm sure he needed to get the word out (Twitter is how that often happens) so the recruiting can start. It's been noted in other threads, but Matt is a great offensive player, and Smith's teams really struggled on O at times - had to be frustrating. Otz no doubt kept Daum and the rest by committing right away to focusing on a fun O - not sure what Coach Lee has planned yet.
Question on the timing - do you think the release was granted by Coach Lee? I'm sure he only wants guys who want to be there.

This whole graduate transfer thing is more than a little frustrating. I get it if you are not seeing much action and want to pursue opportunities where you can play more, but if you are a key contributor to a team, especially one that has experienced success, don't you owe your teammates, the University, and their fans a little loyalty? Perhaps I'm just too old school.

If the coach who recruits you is still there maybe then you owe some loyalty, but loyalty is also very generational. In the good old days people worked off the clock because it was good for the company. They worked somewhere 35 years and you were a company man. Then baby boomers came along and didn’t want to work their way up the ladder and take 30 years to be a boss. They figured out if they set goals and achieved them they could move every 5-7 years and get farther ahead and make more $ that way. Why should the company keep all the riches? Gen x decided they didn’t care as much about the corner office and being boss, they wanted to be challenged and are willing to move every few years if it means staying on the cutting edge and challenged. Moving around usually gets them more money too. There is a micro generation of xennials in there from about 1977-1983. They are a mix of X and today’s millennial. Millennials watched their parents get laid off a decade ago during the recession when companies weren’t “loyal” to them. So they are loyal to themselves and their best options. Someone has to look out for #1. There is still some loyalty in this world, but now the power is more balanced and IMO it is a good thing. We’ve benefited from graduate transfers, and now we may get hurt by one. There is no perfect system for anything, so we deal with it. Matt owes me nothing.

I really hope that Matt gives Todd Lee a solid chance and listen to what he has to say. Like many of us on this forum, we didn't know anything about Todd Lee until a few days ago but also like you, what I've learned through posts on this forum, articles, and other research, I like the guy...a lot. At the end of the day, if Matt chooses to leave to greener pastures, so be it. The next year or two might be a bit rocky but I'm confident that Herbster made the best decision for South Dakota Basketball. Hang in there everybody!

I’d be worried about Nebraska.
Also, if a couple other guys start jumping ship then Mooney definitely won’t be back.

He's gone. Stinks, but I get it. Coach that recruited him left so I hold nothing against him for leaving too. He'll get a chance at a bigger program where they'll be able to get an at-large bid to the tournament with hopes of a deep run, instead of his current situation where the best possible scenario is field of 64.

So is this when the bunny fans start hoping and praying that Mooney leaves and now you're even wishing for the entire team to bail? Then next season you'll be the first to whine about RPI and strength of conference etc. Thank you for your concern.

Today made me remember the post game comments from matt after being eliminated from the SLT in 2017. Talking about how every kid dreams of playing in the NCAA tournament. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if going to a program with a much better chance because they could get an at-large berth isn’t a major factor in his decision.

Then next season you'll be the first to whine about RPI and strength of conference etc. Thank you for your concern. Not even close. I believe that Mooney could come back, but if other guys start jumping ship then he’s definitely gone. He won’t come back to a poor team.
