Well everyone outside USD seems to think our sports are one man shows. Yeah, or one-woman shows. How many times did we hear that without Seekamp we wouldn't be contenders in the conference? They were saying the same thing after the first year of existence of the U of South Dakota when they were State College. They technically may big big brother but they are the younger brother and they need to not forget that.

We will be just fine without Mooney.

If he leaves, in my opinion, it would be for 3 reasons. 1.) Closer to home 2.) NCAA tourney team likely 3.) Chance to play in front of large crowds and higher exposure Nebraska doesn’t fill the bill on #1. #2 is about the same odds as USD winning the SLT and going. #3 is like yeah whatever. Football school first Earlier Yote 53 gave some good logic on reasons he shouldn’t transfer. Matt is really to young to think about the lifetime friendships that will only be enhanced if he stays. To this day, I can tell you how proud I was to play for USD, have some team success, but most importantly have MANY lifetime friends and people I care for very much that still get together and have awesome times together. Also friends I’ve cried with because we lost “one of us”, or a spouse. In our Coyote Brotherhood, we had one give his kidney for another teammate. 34 guys tested and were willing to make that sacrifice. We raised over $10,000 for Weber States wife who’s battling cancer. And we are close to putting together the last pieces to provide athletic scholarships for today’s athletes at USD. If I could sit down with Matt, this is what I would tell him. He has a real opportunity to have the same thing, but likely loses that by leaving. Staying and finishing the deal he will be more proud of when he’s 60 than now. Staying and crossing that last hurdle of winning the SLT and going to the dance will mean more to him than going to some big school that he possibly helps do good things but will be forgotten quicker than he was remembered. All those things add up to why he should stay. It’s really special to be a former athlete at USD, which makes you a Coyote for life. If he stays and leads USD to our first NCAA Tournament, he goes into instant legend status, pretty much a Hall of Fame lock. In Coyote basketball, his name gets mentioned in the same sentence with Mueller, Trofholz, Rosie, Murph, Hemenway, Hatchett, Graves, etc. That's something that 20 years from now he would look back on and it would really mean something, more than just being another player at some bigger school. But everyone is different and values things differently.

Anyone else picture the conversation between Coach Lee and Mooney going down almost exactly like this (including the made/missed shots)?
I like Matt and hope he stays, and wish him the best on his next team. But I don't care if he plays or not.

We will be just fine without Mooney. we might be just fine 2 or 3 years from now but without him next year that is a fairly significant piece that will greatly reduce the chances of the Coyotes making the NCAA tourney. He is a guy that can be relied upon as a go to player. If just fine is maybe a 10-6 conference record and no ncaa berth than I agree that we will be just fine. It all depends on ones expectations.

Arizona St, Oregon, Iowa St, Texas Tech, Creighton, Nebraska, Indiana, Virginia, Arizona, Memphis,TCU, Northwestern, Missouri have all reached out to Mooney
Matt meets with Iowa St today. Creighton and Memphis tomorrow. Indiana, Texas Tech, and Northwestern on Sunday.
Goodman is saying Mooney might end up being most coveted grad transfer in the country.

How about a little sarcasm to try to keep positive about the situation. Matt Mooney leaving isn't the end of the world just yet but someone just turned on the Universes exit sign.

My expectation is that no individual player is bigger than the team or the program. If he decides to leave, best of luck to him, but Coyote basketball will be fine, we will carry on.

Or it may prove to be an opportunity for the coach to show this is a team sport, develop the other players, play even better defense, and team basketball. I hope all the players stay, but the program will be fine with the right leadership.

All one needs to understand this potential move is that list. South Dakota doesn't exactly stack up well with those names.

In my previous post, I don't want it to sound flippant, like we don't need Matt Mooney. I wish he would stay.
I also understand that this is his life, his dreams, his goals. As much as we'd like, we can't live it for him, or frankly, shouldn't pass judgement on his choices.
I wish him luck, whatever path he chooses, and I hope he finds success, and will look back on this period of his life, someday, and be happy.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but while I appreciate the name on the back of the jersey, this is why I primarily root for the name on the front.
