My leading candidate is as follows. Whomever can convince Matthew Mors to sign a letter of intent with the University of South Dakota.

To me, a coach has to have integrity and a lot of character. They have to be the type of person who I would want to coach my kid.

Does anyone know if Ryan Miller has pursued head coaching jobs elsewhere in the past 4 years? He was a finalist with us last time around and I sort of figured he would have landed a head coaching job by now.

I'd be excited with Miller. I would guess Herbster has a couple guys in mind like him (assistant at a major program) that most of us haven't heard of. One that spearheaded recruiting may take priority over X's & O's. Remind me - the general reason Miller didn't get it last time was he just needed some more experience and the program really needed someone with HC experience, right?

The other issue that I learned from a very good source was that the administration thought he would struggle with the donor side of things. The guy has great basketball IQ and can coach, it's the public relations side of the job that he would have struggled with in the past.

I just remember an angry tweet from Mike Miller about Ryan not even getting a call from SDSU two years ago. If Mike was pissed, I'm sure Ryan was in his ear behind the scenes. I'd love that kind of "chip on your shoulder" type of coach in Vermillion. I know it can backfire, but I just love passionate coaches. One with local ties and local fame couldn't hurt in recruiting either.

Wow if his problem is the PR side of things I am not too worried about that as long as he has a no Joose clause in his contract. if he can coach and he can recruit it appears he checks those boxes. anyone that has a chip on their shoulder to beat the Jacks gets my vote. All in all Miller does seem like the best of the names right now.

Plus, the amount of national connections he has. Think USD/Kentucky match ups. Also, getting nationally renown coaches into Verm for a basketball camp.

He is certainly no Craig when it comes to the public relations side. He's not that social of a guy, I could see him struggling in an interview. However, he is as competitive as they come. He would work his ass off, especially on the recruiting trail I'm sure. I don't know what to make of the fact that he's bounced around so much. I don't know how common that is. He does keep landing good jobs, I don't know if he just keeps getting higher assistant jobs or if he wants experience working with different coaches or if it's not really his choice to be leaving. I would be interested in what those past coaches he's worked with have to say about him that's for sure.

The chip on his shoulder may be what we need to get us over the hump of beating that school up north. Picking the pockets of donors is what the admin is supposed to do.

Keep in mind when Smith was hired we were still in the fundraising mode for the new arena.

I would be interested in what those past coaches he's worked with have to say about him that's for sure. Supposedly he is considered one of the top recruiters in the country. Assistants like that are in high demand, and are usually paid very well. The fact that he was "associate head coach" at both UNLV and Auburn is another clue. Often that title is used to justify paying a top-recruiting assistant much more than would be market value for a similar assistant.

I’m not sure on the year it happened but I saw Argus leader had Big article on Ryan scoring 45 or something to beat jacks in frost to go to elite 8. PR stuff with boosters? He seems personable but if that was a question ultimately Winning helps Donors!! Going to the Dance helps Donors and attendance. Get me a coach that everyone knows can recruit, has a lot of experience under different systems. I think he has Australia ties as well.
