OK, now that Jay Elsen has reported Smith's departure per USD sources, I think it's a safe bet it will be official. That said, it's never too early to start speculating.
Top of my list at this point is Ryan Miller.
Other names mentioned:
Paul Sather (Northern State)
Tom Billeter (Augie)
Frankly, I don't think we go for a D2 coach with no D1 experience.
Any other names that pop out to anyone?

Sather and Billeter are great guys and have enjoyed a lot of success at their levels. However, they should not be seriously considered for our next coach.

I know he won't get a serious look but I think Matt wilber at dwu is a great coach. Whoever plucks him out of dwu will be lucky. Whoever we do get should make it a top priority to get Dawn's son AJ away from Augie, I have no idea why we didn't offer him. He is a stud and could play for USD.

I certainly couldn’t judge if a kid can play or not, but was he good enough to do it? I’m honestly curious why we didn’t go after him to be honest

I was for tj and smith over miller last go around but this go around I’d list Miller as the top one to beat and I think he would not only be the safest hire but the hire with most overall upside. I wonder what he makes at TCU under coach Dixon?

Haha, thanks Barstool. Good stuff.
Lansing wouldn’t leave ISU, would he?

I wonder what he makes at TCU under coach Dixon? I don’t know, but I do know TJ took a cut in pay to get SDSU job, and I also think Craig took a cut to take USD job. My guess is he makes 250,00-300,000 but just a guess

It is a for sure huge "no" for Sather or Billeter. Sather hasn't really had Northern at a high national level until this year so he is too unproven. Billeter is the definition of average. He hasn't really done that great with Augie other than a 2 year span when they won the national title. He has been far from being able to replicate that both prior to and after the Augie national title run. If he had Augie as a major threat now I might want him to be considered more seriously but Augie has not recovered from losing their great senior class.

So I think the 300K range would be about on par for Miller as an assistant at TCU.

The summit league has been absolutely dominated by the top talented teams. That’s a pretty obvious statement however it shows how important it is to hire a coach that bring in top tier players in this league. Going back to 2009 the Winning team of the tournament every year had a player that was an NBA prospect or G-League prospect. We are right in that discussion with Mooney but continued high level talent dominates this league.
Any other good coaching prospects out there with strong recruiting ties?

Interesting little tidbit... Mike Miller (Ryan Miller's brother) just followed and retweeted the article so the interest is definitely there.

I definitely remember my all time favorite coach, Jerry Tarkanian, saying that success at the collegiate level was 80% recruiting. He also said he liked to take transfers because their cars had already been paid for.
