“In 2015, Miller, who was named the fourth-best recruiter outside the Power 5 while at UNLV by ESPN's Jeff Borzello and Adam Finkelstein, had a hand in the Rebels garnering commitments from two ESPN Top-100 signees in five star Stephen Zimmerman, who was rated the nation's No. 12 ranked player by ESPN, and Derrick Jones, a four star recruit who was ranked in the top-50 nationally. Another notable to play under Miller's stay in Las Vegas was Christian Wood who currently plays for the Philadelphia 76ers.” - TCU Basketball website. www.gofrogs.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/ryan_miller_1013523.html

I found the tweet from Mike Miller from April 2016. I guess it wasn't as angry as I remember. Sarcastic, though. He was retweeting Zimmer.

The other issue that I learned from a very good source was that the administration thought he would struggle with the donor side of things. The guy has great basketball IQ and can coach, it's the public relations side of the job that he would have struggled with in the past. I could see that. He is certainly no Craig when it comes to the public relations side. He's not that social of a guy, I could see him struggling in an interview. However, he is as competitive as they come. He would work his ass off, especially on the recruiting trail I'm sure. I don't know what to make of the fact that he's bounced around so much. I don't know how common that is. He does keep landing good jobs, I don't know if he just keeps getting higher assistant jobs or if he wants experience working with different coaches or if it's not really his choice to be leaving. I would be interested in what those past coaches he's worked with have to say about him that's for sure. I haven't done the research to confirm this, but I think his movement either coincided with a head coach losing his job or him moving to a "bigger" job. If anybody knows better, please correct me. I like what YF said about Eric Peterson as well. IF, and this is a big if, he could keep the entirety of the staff in place (or at least the bulk of it), maintain the current roster and appease the incoming recruits that are signed, I think you have to think long a hard about it. Here is the thing with Peterson, I believe that he is the best recruiter on the staff. He is also the only one with head coaching experience (in fact he was also the AD). Herbster has got to conduct a national search to see what is out there, but if they aren't "wowed" by the response, I would be fine attempting to maintain the current crew. It worked for NDSU when Miles left (conversely it hasn't worked as well for them with Richmond after Philips left, however). In this circumstance, I am grateful that Herbster and Williams are basketball guys. They should be prepared for this and know the lay of the land.

I'll throw this in for thought: Does Austin Hansen go to Utah State with Craig? If not, would he possibly be considered a candidate?

Public relations with the donors...Boots wasn't exactly Mr. Personality and he did ok here. I'll take the recruiting chops all day long. It would seem a coach would need some relatability to be successful on the recruiting trail. I like the idea of Ryan Miller. Maybe Macy would grad transfer here? (Cue bunny people getting their undies in a bunch over that statement)

Is he the clear cut favorite of current assistants? I would guarantee one thing no assistant is ever going to keep all the assistants or most likely any of them. Not because they wouldn’t want to but most likely Craig is going to have a nice check for them in Logan. I’d assume to if I’m an assistant and didn’t get the job I wouldn’t want to work for someone I think I should have gotten the job over. Someone said this the other day- if you hire the right person no one is going to leave no matter if it’s wxtern or internal. Internally you have good connections to those players already, externally if your a good recruiter and players coach you should be able to sell the players on your vision. Maybe it’s a case externally like sdsu and otz kept that Klink guy.

Sather and Billeter are great guys and have enjoyed a lot of success at their levels. However, they should not be seriously considered for our next coach. Agreed. That surprises me. I would think a D2 national championship and all of Tom's D1 experience would make him plenty qualified but I doubt he'd be interested. He has it made at Augie.

He's won 3 national titles at two different levels. You can fall into a good situation and win one, but to win a national title at two different places? That's pretty impressive, he must be doing something right.

The timing of Smith's leaving is perfect. President Abbott is leaving soon and our next coach could be the final piece of his legacy. Let's hope he knocks this out of the park. Who knows what the next president will be like with our athletics.

Gotta think this opens the door for someone like Miller.
Herbster says, in M. Garry interview, "You don't know what you don't know until you've been a head coach, but I don't think that will be a hard and fast rule -- we're not going to rule anyone out because of that."
Plus... Fakira (our Australian recruit) was recruited by TCU as well, so Miller, very likely, already has a connection with him.

That surprises me. I would think a D2 national championship and all of Tom's D1 experience would make him plenty qualified but I doubt he'd be interested. He has it made at Augie. Why would he not be interested in a chance to move up to a pretty good mid major program. I actually don't mind coaches from the D2 level as Plitzuweit and Bob Nielson both won national titles at that level. In all honestly Bob has yet to prove that he is great at the D1 FCS level yet despite winning two national title with UMD. Tom is a good guy and a funny guy that would probably be popular amongst those close to the program but it appears so far that he was a one team wonder with Augie. He wasn't great before or after their title run. He was solid but if a D2 is going to be hired they have to have a consistent track record of excellence at that level. From a sacastic stand point (not sarcastic to some) does anyone think Joey James would want to come back. Many did not want Craig Smith over him when the decision was made. That is why you don't hire most assistants unless they come from a big time program with extensive experience.

The only thing that remotely connects them to this job is that they are from or graduated from in-state schools. I don't think having SD ties is at the top of Herbie's list of qualifications for this job.

I could care less if a coach came from Saturn. I would want them if they gave the Coyotes the best chance to win. as far as Austin Hansen. I just don't know if I can live with a head coach that came from a particular state college. I could never ever go to another school and have anything to do with trying to defeat the Coyotes. that would be a conflict of interest and against every fiber in my body. I want to take something away from the Jacks that stings. Ryan Miller did that as a player and I wouldn't mind if he could do that in another capacity in red and white.
