Might be a little early for this, but what the heck.
My predictions for Summit WBB coaching moves:
Locks: Niecee Nelson out at Fort Wayne - She has already been placed on administrative leave for "personnel reasons", and has been rumored to have abused players in some way (according to one of the parents). She's no Urban Meyer, so her sterling W/L record can't save her. Too bad, as the Mastodons were starting to look like a decent (less crappy) basketball team. Obviously if the abuse allegations are true, then none of that matters. This isn't a marquis mid-major job, so they will have to roll the dice again on an up-and-comer.
Likely moves: Brittany Lange, UNO - I don't know how many years she has on her contract, but this is her 6th year as HC at Omaha, and her best year was two years ago, at 5th in the conference, with an upset win over USD in the SLT but no post-season. Combined record 72-98 (.424) isn't terrible, but her teams have been consistently in the 6th-7th range in conference, with no post season ever. You could argue that she needs more time with the massive roster overhaul, but it would have been better if they showed something towards the end of the season. I'm not seeing much, but I'll root for her anyway because she's good-looking (sorry for the sexism). Also, I'd like to see how her "experiment" goes with all the diverse transfers. My money is on a change, though.
Maren Walseth, NDSU - Her performance on the court and in recruiting has been awful at what once was a proud program. Firing her this year would be a no-brainer if not for her long contract. Mid-majors generally don't like to buy out contracts for non-revenue sports, but if ever there was a time to make an exception it would be this. At the end of the day it comes down to priorities. Are the Bison content with dominant football track and softball, and letting basketball & volleyball go by the wayside? I'll guess this is her last season.
Possible moves? Travis Brewster, UND - Similar to Walseth, in terms of the last couple of seasons being bad, and in terms of a declining, once proud program. The big difference is that Brewster has actually achieved something in the past. Brewster has been there 7 years, and has an overall 111-101 (.524) record, has two Big Sky regular season titles (2014,2017) two COY awards (2014,2017) one NCAA appearance (2014) four post-season tourneys. But with all that, his last two seasons have been very lackluster, and he doesn't seem to be recruiting at a high level. Specifically recruiting players that allow success in the Summit League (offense-driven league). One could argue he needs time to adjust to the new league, but I personally don't see it. My prediction is that he gets one more year based on his contract, and past success. I don't see improvement on the horizon with him, but who knows?
Leaving for better jobs? Coach P??? - National attention cuts both ways. It gets you talked about, helps with recruiting, helps get you in the tournament, etc. But as a mid-major it can also get your coach on hiring lists. A.J. has been in this position many times, and every year some rumors swirl. Every year, he either declines or is not really interviewed. Personally I think he would leave, but only for a handful of jobs. Power 5/6 jobs in his comfort region (upper midwest, Minnesota) or an elite job. Those jobs don't open up every year, so I think his young family is happy to not be disrupted with moving.
Likewise, I think, based on her recruiting comments, that Coach P would also prefer to stay and recruit in the upper midwest. She is from Wisconsin, and has played/coached/recruited mostly in the upper midwest, specifically Wisconsin and Michigan. Big 10 and Big East jobs in that region are, I'm guessing, our main worry. At this point I think there isn't another mid-major that Coach P (or A.J.) would consider, as they are all lateral moves.
I think she stays for 3 reasons: 1. this team is set up for a big 2020 season, and her recruiting has been excellent moving forward. 2. Her daughter is still in High School, and people from Vermillion tell me that her family has really integrated into the community unlike some coaches have in the past. 3. Most of the major programs in Michigan/Wisconsin are either doing very well, or have relatively new coaches.
Keep an eye on UW over the next few years, though. Coach Tsipis has not made much progress over his three years there....

www.inforum.com/sports/basketball/977054-Jacobson-no-longer-on-the-Bison-womens-basketball-teamAnd the defections from Fargo just keep coming... At this point I can't see Walseth being retained. They are losing games, fans, and good players. It will be interesting to see who they bring in. There is a good deal of local talent in the region, so you would think a coach with experience recruiting here (especially Northern Minnesota) might be preferred. At least that would be my preference if I were them. Also, the Summit has become such an offensive juggernaut, scheme has to be a factor, I would assume. Any NSIC coaches come to mind? I don't follow those teams.

Here's my un-educated suggestion, based on a brief internet search:
Mandy Pearson, Minnisota-Duluth Head Coach.
- Has shown steady improvement in her 4 years there: 7-19, 14-14, 16-11, 19-6 - Also showed ability to turn around a program at previous D-III St. Mary's (Winona, MN) - This year, Duluth is the NSIC's #1 Asst/TO, #1 Scoring Defense, #1 turnover margin, #2 3PT defense, #3 3PT%, etc. Good stats for this League, I think. - She is a native of Eden Valley, MN (near St. Cloud), standout player at Concordia-Moorhead, Coached at Hamline (St. Paul) as well. In short, a Minnesota girl.
There are other great coaches in the NSIC, but many of them are either lifers (Nelson @ Moorhead, Krauth @ Augie, etc.) or too slim of a resume (Johnson @ Concordia). Pearson seems to be a good combination of youth and experience. Has been a builder (like our FB coach). A good option for the dumpster fire in Fargo right now.
Just my $0.02

I didn't realize this when I did my analysis, but our assistant Jenna F had been coaching under Mandy for a number of years prior to her coming to Vermillion, and both of them were Point guards at Concordia-Moorhead. Small world.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.wane.com/amp/sports/pfw-women-s-basketball-coach-returns-from-suspension/1799571021Apparently Niecee Nelson has been cleared of all allegations. If this were a winning male coach in a high-profile sport, I might have some reservations in the findings of a University’s internal investigation. To me there is no motivation for them to lie about it, and the allegations must have truly been unfounded. It’s a shame that (anonymous) false accusations can disrupt a program’s progress, and a coach’s life/career/reputation so profoundly, but I guess it’s the times we are living in. Universities have to be hyper-vigilant now because of too many bad actors in the past, like Larry Nassar, for example. False accusations are so harmful. Not just for the falsely accused, but for the real victims that will be taken less seriously in the future. Just shameful, IMO.

Their little darling probably wasn't getting the playing time they so richly deserved. It's bad enough when parents try to run high school programs, but now it seems to be seeping up into the colleges too. Another example is at NDSU. Regardless of whether Walseth is a good coach or not, I don't know and really don't care, that whole episode just reeks of the Jacobsen family, especially the mom, trying to control the narrative in Fargo. It's this entire helicopter parent society we've built.

(and officiating, for that matter) You have to love it to put up with the cringe-worthy parts.

Pearson and Duluth just won the NSIC championship yesterday. The stats stood out to me as a team with good fundamentals. I think she deserves a look from one or both of the D-1 North Dakota schools. The Tournement MVP was Duluth's Sarah Grow, a 6'-2" Sophomore from Circle Pines, MN (Northeast Metro).

Richman should be gone, but apparently he has 1 year left on contract that no 1 knew about. SMH This is the “both” thread, but I don’t have much for insights on the men’s coaches. Billups will probably get more time at Denver (year 3), WIU doesn’t have the money to fire coaches, etc. feel free to elaborate. There are a hell of a lot more fans in Fargo and GF that care about WBB than one will find in Denver, Omaha, Tulsa, Macomb and Ft Wayne combined. They just need a better product on the floor. I’m not at all threatened by improvements in the ND programs. You guys need to help elevate the conference RPI profile. Rising tide, and all that...

I'd be surprised if JD Gravina is still at Western Illinois next year. The whole school is in the dumps and they just laid off 132 university employees. I forget what job he was a finalist for last year but I hope he finds a good landing place. Wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at NDSU.
