August, my man, August is when I'm ready to talk football. Still trying to enjoy the summer and convince myself it's not over half gone.

Good Morning, The truth of the matter is that there is about 10 of us on here that love USD sports and like to chime in about them. But because you want the banter, I'll take the lead. Joe has the kids jacked up, that I know. The real question for us is we have so many new kids replacing some awfully good players. Whether we joined the MVC or the Big Sky, only time will tell if we have the horses yet to compete. I think last year we had enough talent to finish in the upper half of either conference, not so sure this year. We historically have good offensive lines, and I think that will hold true. We have a couple of decent running backs and an untested QB. I am told he is very fast and evasive, but that's by people in the inner circle. Defensively, if the Juco D-linemen we recruited hold their own, we might be very good. We have a kid named Tyler Starr that is a freaking stud. He is mean and loves to hit. They list him as a LB, but he will be all over the field. We have a wide receiver that is as good as there is anywhere. His name is Will Powell. He is a great athlete. I am not sure what Joe runs for an offense, you Griz fans probably know better. I just know I am looking forward to the trip out there and the chance to mingle with some Griz. Your turn. YFE

YFE Yesssss football talk. It's too bad your board isn't more active, as the game rolls closer I'm sure there will be a lot more of us on here. Most of us are good guys but there's some assclowns that like to be dinks, take them with a grain of salt. Much like your team we have a lot of players replacing really good seniors, specifically CB Trumaine Johnson and LB Caleb McSurdy who were drafted as well as CBDonny Lisowski, WRJabin Sambrano, K Brody McKnight and one other (OL) who slips my mind right now who were all picked up on professional rosters in some form or other. We also just had our starting QB charged with rape. The whole thing sounds a little hokey with the way it has been handled but there's no turning back now. We'll have 1 of 2 players at QB Shay Smithwick-Hahn or Trent Mckinney. Both have different styles but there not here because they suck, it will be interesting to see who comes out in the new coaches scheme. (Coach and AD were fired over crooked administration handling of things in on way or other) On a positive note, our running game should be one hell of a steamroller and our Linebacking core is going to be solid and fun to watch. Over the last 20 years we seem to not need to rebuild just reload so hopefully we aren't in as bad of shape as it looks like but time will tell. If you make the trip, wear your gear and put on a happy face. People will treat you like a king. Spend some time in the tailgates enjoy the stadium and go have some drinks downtown after the game. If you get into one of the hotels close to the stadium you can walk everywhere and the first game of the year is usually really nice. It could still snow a foot though.

Does anyone know the team well enough to go position by position through the starters that graduated and list prospects?

If you hit our site, there are some really good rundowns by BWahlberg. You will have to sift through a lot of siht to find them however. We have the opposite problem, we have a bunch of people who care too much and with the off the field issues, there are a lot of non-football threads. I will see if I can get some of those on here though.

Does anyone know the team well enough to go position by position through the starters that graduated and list prospects? Dupuyer sent me this way, that's kind of a huge request, I can give a quick overview: Offense: QB: Shay Smithwick-Hann or Trent McKinney, our expected starting QB Jordan Johnson was just charged with rape. It was expected for a while but moving ahead we've got Shay who is a taller pocket-style QB or Trent who is a quick spread style QB. RB/FB: Peter Nguyen/Dan Moore/Jordan Canada. Each is unique, Peter is a scat back, he's quick and shifty. Dan is a beast a big power back. Canada is a speedster but might not play in this game unless he got his grades up over the summer. WRs: Mitch Saylor (z) a tall possession WR, Bryce Carver (x) quicker WR with great hands, Sam Gratton (y) best slot WR in the Big Sky. TE: Greg Hardy, 1st team all-conf TE that does everything well. OL: (from left to right) Poole / Poehls / Oiland / Hendrickson / Kistler. Kistler is 1st team all american FCS. Our Oline is huge, I'd guess avg weight is about 305 and avg height is prob in the 6-6 to 6-7 range. Great run blocking line, also good in pass protection but our system is a quick release so usually the QB isn't pressured much. DL: (left to right) Josh Harris / Alex Bienemann / Tonga Takai / Zach Wagemnann. Harris and Bienemann are the guys to watch out for, Alex has played all over the line, Josh is a beast power rusher. LB: Kanongata'a / Coyle or Stuberg / Tripp. Our LBs are the best collection in the Big Sky. In addition to these four we've got 2 others (Owen and Holt) that would start on many other teams in the conference. Tripp is only a junior but has NFL talk brewing about him. Kanongata'a is a shorter guy at 5-11 but a powerful rusher. Coyle and Stu are filling in the role left by NFL draft pick Caleb McSurdy CB: Sean Murray / Nate Harris. We have a few transfers in a s well but Murray is our main dude and Harris has great raw talent. S: Matt Hermanson / Bo Tully or Steven Rominger. Hermanson was a tremendous surprise and wound up almost taking Bo Tully's spot on the team last year as a true frosh. "Heremy" is a great field general and very smart. Tully is quick and good in zone but Rominger is fast on his heels b/c Tully's tackling has not been great while Rominger has been rock solid. K: Chris Lider, RS frosh, lefty, good power, unproven P: Stephen Shaw, RS frosh as well, high spirals but also unproven KR/PR: Peter Nguyen or Ellis Henderson. Nguyen has returned before but had fumble issues. Henderson is a new transfer to the team.

Of this group we'd be looking at 6 new starters on offense and 8 new starters on defense replacing mostly graduated (or in one case charged with a crime) players.
However while that is a ton on offense of those looking at being "new" starters Saylor, Hendrickson, Carver, Poole, & Poehls rotated in and out a ton and not just during junk time but all throughout games. In terms of true untested starters on offense you've got just 1 (Shay or Trent at QB).
On defense it was the same thing, almost all of these guys rotated in a ton. Our whole front 4 on the D-line are all new starters but they all played extensively in ST and on the D-line last year. The only guy of all our projected defenders that did not play at all last year was Nate Harris who red-shirted. Also Jordan Tripp took a medical RS after 3 games into the season. Everyone else that's new to starting (Harris, Bienemann, Takai, Wagemann, Stuberg/Coyle, Murray, Rominger) was on the field a ton.
It's a bit of a story behind what's on the surface because at first glance the defense especially seems inexperienced. When, in fact, all but 1 projected starter has actually been out there a lot.

Tyler freaking Starr is worth the price of admission. I predict he will be personally responsible for at least one sack/fumble recovery against the Griz.
I know the Griz faithful are looking past this game. I wouldn't. I think JG takes this team, which is not short on talent, to a whole new level.

Well we do have App State the next week, for arguably our biggest FCS regular season game in history. Our team definitely won't be though

Well, it's gonna suck to go into that App State game sporting an 0-1 record, isn't it?

We just had our playmaker QB removed from the team, we're not overlooking any game. Additionally - there's some history with your head coach and ours.

Well, it's gonna suck to go into that App State game sporting an 0-1 record, isn't it? Looking at the way your fans are picking wins/conference wins I'm not too worried about that. What's the chances of hearing about your town and stadium. I'd like to come out when we go play there. On a side note: It was reported last night that we do actually did get a qb transfer from Stanford. Adam Brzeczek 6' 195 rs freshman.
