A pretty average 5-6 SDSU team gave an 85 scholarship Bug Eaters team everything they could handle two years ago. Pretty sure an 85 scholarship Michigan team fell to App State a few years back. An 85 scholarship Pittsburgh got destroyed by Youngstown State this year. Haha, Pittsburgh is a horribly coached team with a lack of a recruiting base for the last 3-4 years. Come one. Nebraska...NDSU could beat them since Nebraska is so up and down, but Rex Burkhead would also easily be the best player they have seen all year. Comparing NDSU to Northwestern in terms of USD's games this year I think NDSUs defense was faster but Northwestern was a little more physical in their DL. NDSU's defense sure dominated USD even more. Offensively Northwestern seemed more explosive than NDSU with Venric Mark. Northwestern's OL was also a little better. If the two teams played I would pick NDSU by6 (as long as NDSUs kicker's pulled hamstring is fully healed.)

It's always interesting to think about FCS vs. FBS, and it's a fun distraction from Saturday's dumpster fire. The fact is, typically, FCS teams only pick off the weaker of the FBS bunch. If the conditions are right (e.g., Nebraska comes out sleepy and NDSU plays flawlessly), NDSU may very well be competitive with Nebraska this year, but only because Nebraska is not an elite (or "top tier") FBS team in 2012. There is no FCS team in the country, including NDSU, that would compete with the likes of Alabama, Oregon, K-State, Florida, LSU, OU, etc. Not a prayer. Hell, the same could be said for most remaining FBS schools.
NDSU is a really good football team, but they'd probably be about the third best team in the MAC, which isn't even an AQ conference. Just some perspective. Fun to think about.

FBS teams obviously don't have a true playoff system which hurts them competitively. Many of these teams rely on their "history" or "names" such as Nebraska. As obc pointed out a very average SDSU team almost beat Nebraska in Lincoln a few yrs ago. And by the way the year the Yotes beat Minnesota the next week USC was trailing MN in the 3rd in MN before finally winning the game.

Just some perspective. Fun to think about. I agree with part of your comment about FBS vs FCS in general. Where I disagree is your comment about the MAC. Just a few years ago we went in and destroyed Central Michigan 44-14. Central Michigan went on to win the MAC that year. NDSU would be dominant in the MAC. You give the MAC much to much respect. Next year we get our chance against K-State. We will be returning a lot of players and I'm looking forward to seeing that game. Anyway best of luck to you guys this weekend and the rest of the season. As you have already been told and are learning the MVFC is not like the Great West. It's a head banger every week. Glenn will get things going down there I've no doubt. Just give him a chance. BB

No disagreement that the MVFC is one of the toughest, if not the toughest FCS conference in the nation. But the Great West was no slouch. The biggest difference was the Great West had only 5 teams and the nonconference schedule for both USD & UND during the transition years were made up of a lot of D2 & NAIA teams. USD would likely have the same O fer conference record in the Great West this year. The 4 former Great West teams in the Big Sky have a combined conference record to date of 11&9.

Why was I so much happier and more excited for USD football when we were stuck as a transition school in the GWFC? I'd love to go back to the days of playing UC-Davis, Noah Shephard, high scoring offense, and listening to a fading signal from San Louis Obispo in the late hours of a Saturday night.
This season has been just miserable.
