Reading the play-by-play board it looks like the Yotes had 'em down big time in the first half then let things get away from them especially in the fourth quarter. In the first two quarters it appears the run set up the pass and they were also able to stop the run. Both great accomplishments! In the second half it looks like the o-line allowed some sacks and the team made some plays against themselves.
Yes, I'm a bit discouraged but it appears we are getting better - not in a hurry, but step-by-step. It's my belief that if we stick to fundamentals we're going to take a game or two down the road.
The almighty Bison lost this week. I say let's forget this game and look ahead to chowing down on Bison next week!!!!

Enough looking in the rear view mirror! Let's move on and get some posts in on the upcoming game.
I still think confidence/intensity can make up for a lot of things. I'd like to see a pumped up team beat the Bears 24-20. Go yotes!!

I like it best when coaches recruit their own players. Therefore I'm willing to cut some slack here. Continuity counts for something I hope. I do agree with mmike that frustration is starting to build and without some creativity (e.g. Sims and Sanders in the same backfield) on offense we may not be giving the team much of a chance. We cannot keep doing the same thing over and over if it doesn't work.

Well, the obvious answer is winning. To some extent, winning becomes part of the culture of an organization or institution doesn't it? Students see themselves as part of a "football institution". What do you think of when you hear Ohio State? How about Princeton? The former conjures up thoughts of vast numbers of students packed in a stadium vocally supporting their team. The latter brings up thoughts of students packing a seminar on physics/economics or some such.
Hope I didn't offend anyone from these two fine universities. I'm not even sure if Princeton has a football team. Also, if you're particular - my mistake, it's THE Ohio State University. Never did know what the big deal was with the prefix THE but I guess it matters if you come from there.

Bonehead plays/calls minimized (yes, this includes the officials) + large crowd + confident team = leathernecks get shaded 34-20.

Could we have won the game? Definitely.
Should we have won? That is the question.
In my estimation we could have won if we hadn't beaten ourselves. We should have won if the team went into the game with the necessary confidence. Did we have confidence? From a fan perspective I'd say probably not. How do we get confidence? Winning is the best way (nothing new here). Preparation also counts (nothing new here either). Sheer determination/willpower is to me another factor. This is where crowd support comes in. If the Yotes routinely had 2,000-3,000 more fans who "refused to lose" I think we'd be in that category no matter what team we were facing.
I'm not criticizing those who game to the game - we just need more people. As I watched the game I wondered what was going on in the greater Vermillion area that was so effective in preventing higher attendance. Shopping at the mall? (yawn) Bringing in the crops? (maybe in the old days) Cramming for that test on Monday? (hardly unless you're a med student and as I recall all their tests were on Fridays) Video games and such? (hum, maybe). I was never a "Ronny Runhome" in the day so I can't quite get it. Maybe - this is a stretch - mom and dad are the culprits! Our students have too nice a home life.
That's it! We should have won only if our students didn't have parents that are so nice .........

I was at the game (1,000 mile round trip) so I guess I can put my two cents in!
This is not in defense of the students but back in the days when we had an outdoor stadium (heck what was the name of that place?) we students had better seating. Okay, we had to look into the sun but we sat between the 30 yard lines. Looking at the student section now I wonder what better seating would do. Ya, I know in many places students sit in the end zone (saw that in Minneapolis and Madison) but I wish the Dome was more accomodating on the west side. You have a small student section on one end and what amounts to the band on the other. Wish there was a way to have a student section closer to midfield. Also, I wish the band - what a great band - sat closer to the students.
Come to think of it, the "Coyote Crazies" banner should be in the band section. I loved them!!
Got it: Inman Stadium. Never did remember who Inman was, though.

Congratulations mmike, for my part you have earned your "Bachelors Degree" in team evaluation/ criticism; something entirely appropriate for a fan board. Let's hope we get more of this as we progress through what appears to be a difficult season. Again, good post and keep sending them! I hope we can get enough fan insights to progress to at least a "Masters Degree" level by the end of the season.
My observation of the team has been muted by the fact I haven't seen them in person. I plan to change that this Saturday by coming to the game. I'm hoping to see a fired up, upset-minded team take the field.

My take on the game pretty much mirrors coyotega's. Symptomatic of a young team we lost our poise early and took some time to gain any confidence. By then it was 14-zip. One thing that struck me is that our QB was inaccurate throwing any mid to deep passing patterns. It might have been the wind or other reasons but something tells me Will Powell has his work cut out for him catching too many passes more than 10 yards deep this season.

For those who have Direct TV the game should be on channel 612.
Going to go with NW 42 Coyotes 13. I'd like to say we have a chance but doubts about our cabability to run the ball and defend give me pause - maybe heartburn if I think about it.
Despite my pessimistic outlook for this game, I do wish the Coyotes the best and will be more than glad to eat my words.

Slight correction: KIMN (not KIMM) is a great radio station in Rapid, serving approximately 175,000 people. I hope the Coyotes can keep it over time, unless we go to the Sturgis station that's 810 on the dial. It comes in clear everywhere in western SD.

Back to the offense vs defense issue - You're right cousin Ed, typically defenses are ahead of offenses early in the season. After one game it appears that in the case of the coyotes the issue is moot since both sides of the ball appear to be struggling.
The issue to me now is the running game. Ball control if you will. Against Colgate I'm hoping we can put up something like 200 yards running the ball. Is this unrealistic?

Thanks, AZSOD for an excellent post! I too would like to see the Yotes win but believe they are likely to lose to Montana as well. The reason for this is that I read somewhere that in spring practice the defense was "ahead of the offense". Not a good sign since most teams strive to put somewhere around 4 touchdowns on the board every game.
Let's hope I'm proven wrong.

Does the Equalizer appear on the internet? If so I'd appreciate a link.
By the way, for you fans in the Black Hills, I heard today that KIMN 1150AM will carry the Coyote football games. Maybe this is old news for some.
