Choosing to run an option based offense would not be lowering our expectations. Cal Poly doesn't view their offense as that. Georgia Southern has been a perennial power running that style.
Maybe someday USD can sign and compete successfully for the top conventional skill players in the region. Right now the other area MVFC teams and UND are out recruiting USD where our recruiting overlaps more often than not. Just a fact.
Facilities and tradition are the biggest black marks. The facilities can be completely done in three years.
SDSU runs a pretty old school balanced attack on offense and a vanilla 4-3 defense. They have proven there are enough players out there if you can find them that can make you a national contender.
USD can do the same - question is will they?

EIU looked like a bottom half MVFC team to me. My guess would be they would beat USD though on a neutral field.
SDSU = Solid running game, physical defense, big strong technically sound OL and DL - tough to defeat.
SDSU is built to compete with NDSU. The jacks seem to be not quite as quick as the Bison but their Offensive and Defensive fronts are every bit as physical.
Game will come down to turnovers and special teams field position. Looking forward to watching.
Hope the USD players watch the game and focus on their position groups - they need to get in the weight room for some serious work this off-season.

I know Western Illinois was very scrappy during the Summit League Tournament last year. Their defense was impressive. Looks like their roster is very different this year - wonder if stylistically we will see the same intensity.
Should learn a lot about USD over the next two games.

Coyote70 - I agree with you that if USD is going to compete in the MVFC they will need to approach things a little differently.
I am biased because I am a fan and former coach of option football. Have a signed copy of Lou Holtz Arkansas Offensive playbook from his time there running the split back veer. what a thing of beauty. USD could build a successful program around that style and recruit HS talent in the middle part of the country that runs that type of offense. Spread offenses have come in in the last 15 years heavily but there are a lot of schools that are option based with JVM type kids (Run first athlete QBs). JVM would be ideal in a Cal Poly/Navy/Air Force type attack. The Cal Poly QB that we faced last year was recruited heavily by PAC 10 schools to play DB - he was an option QB in High School in Portland OR. Cal Poly signed him because they recruited him at QB. We could do the same.
It does take an entire staff that has experience coaching that style of FB and Joe Glenn has not to my knowledge run that offense in the last 25 years as a core philosophy. Like every offense there are some drawbacks to that style as well.
Interesting to think about but we will only see that style offense if the next regime is hired specifically to run that style.

One of the problems is if you go to the Yankton Press & Dakotan website to read articles on Sunday morning you don't have anything new. Go look right now and there is an article previewing the Jacks Playoff game and a wrap up from USD vs Culver-Stockton.
The Argus is updated daily.
I agree that it is disappointing there is no mention of the WBB teams first victory over a Big East team.
USD needs to make some headway with the Argus and get better exposure.

SDSU beats NDSU - The Bison left the last matchup feeling lucky to have won
Wofford beats New Hampshire
Georgia Southern beats Central Arkansas - will be a great game have to go with the home team here
Old Dominion over Coastal Carolina
Montana St over Stony Brook
Sam Houston St over Cal Poly - would love to see Poly win
App St over Illinois State - this will be a route
Eastern Washington over Wagner - not much of a game here

obc, WRONG. I highly doubt Stu writes the headlines, don't they have people at night who do that stuff? And again, going right to the Argus? I doubt there was some massive conspiracy by a freelance writer for an NAIA game. Other media was there, I suggest looking at those stories first if you have such a problem with the Argus. The argus leader is the regional paper of record in SD whether you recognize it or not. the argus is the paper that has the most distribution and local content. I do look at those other media outlets and they do not have the readership or reach of the Argus. Stu is the head Sports Editor and does deal in the titles of articles - wasn't asking a question.

Attended the game and the team looked out of their rhythm most of the game. That being said Culver-Stockton was never going to win that game.
Argus write up of the game is titled: Coyotes survive brush with Culver-Stockton. Typical face slap treatment by the Argus. (Stu Whitney as editor writes article titles mostly not Mick)

My round one pics
SDSU over EIU - close game - balance of the Jacks offense and stout defense (pass rush) rule the day
Bethune Cookman over Costal Carolina - total uninformed guess
Stony Brook over Villanova
Colgate over Wagner - can a team USD actually beat this year win a playoff game?
My bracket has Sam Houston State facing Georgia Southern in the finals with Sam Houston winning.

From listening to Boots and talking to people in the AD - Boots is not going anywhere. He is excited about this year and really excited for next years roster. In his mind at least next year will be a chance to make a run at the Summit Tournament.

Ticket sales today (season ticket holders could purchase their seats for Saturday's game) were so strong the system got bogged down and the season ticket holder priority has been extended into tomorrow. [/quote]
It is all about how you spin it I guess. Did SDSU not anticipate most if not all season ticket holders would want to go to the playoff game? Shouldn't have been a surprise.
