In fact it's fingernails on a chalkboard whenever we hear Ki-yo-TEES!

Thanks for the info - I don't purposefully try to offend anyone not from Cal Poly or Sacramento State.

Gameday tomorrow. Not seeing much in terms of analysis on the board yet. So here's mine.
What it will take to beat Davis:
1. Shore up the special teams coverage. Obviously. We can't have negative net punts tomorrow and no big kickoff returns. We won't see the same athleticism as we did last week against K State, but we still need to stay true to coverage lanes and break down to tackle. Hopefully Miles got the bad ones out of the way last week.
2. Establish the run. We have a pretty strong stable of RBs with some speed in the backfield which is something we haven't seen much of the last few years. Personally, I'd like to see more of our power game as opposed to the same inside zone stuff. After looking at a few of KSU's games from last season, I don't think we struggled on the ground too much more than a lot of the Big 12 teams they faced. O-line is still healthy so I think we see an improved ground game. That should open up the passing game for our WRs and TEs which looks to be a pretty solid group.
3. Sound coverage out of our DBs. Don't get beat deep. Make them convert on the ground. Get them to third and long, play smart, and get off the field.
4. This is the big one. Forget about the heat, the travel, and the road record. If this were in the dome, I'd say we are the heavy favorites. Time to become a good on the road.
Go Yotes.

I would love to see a much more direct, attacking style of power run game. Additionally, although I didn't expect to see much in the Kansas State game, I would like to see what kind of pass rush we can put together on Saturday. I would really like to see the d-ends close down the pocket.

I agree with the power run game but would also like to see a mixture of with our speedier freshman backs and not just everything up the middle. Also some swing passes to these backs.

I should clarify, when I say power run I mean more lead blocking, pulling guards, double team blocking, etc. vs the zone blocking scheme. Not necessarily meaning "up the gut." I just feel like Wes' offense is too passive, indirect and to the edges. I would like to see us attack the middle of the field more. That is where our TEs could pay huge dividends.

I'm excited to see us play an FCS opponent now. I'm feeling pretty good about the team right now after taking a bit more time to digest the KSU game.
Saeger completed 60% of his passes against a very stout opponent, which is exactly what we needed to see from him against a big time opponent. The running game just has to get going against UC Davis though. We will need to have more than one dimension on offense and I believe we will see both dimensions in play against UC Davis. Nevada just ran all over Davis, averaging 5.9 YPC. I don't think we will get that high of a number but I fully expect the team to break the 3 YPC threshold.
We did lose 34-0 to KSU, but were only out gained by 70 yards on offense. Reason being that we were crushed in the special teams phase of the game. We can not give away field position like we did last week if we want to be a competitive team. Bad kick/punt coverage, a shanked punt, missed field goals, and a muff by Shufford absolutely sunk us on special teams. If there is one spot on this team that I can point to and say that improvement is desperately needed it is special teams. We need to see this improvement beginning tomorrow.
Two great things we can say after playing KSU is that we had no turnovers on offense - we actually won the turnover battle, and we have everyone healthy. Lately we haven't even been able to survive Fall camp without notable injuries, and we have even made it through the opener healthy this year. A healthy team and improved special teams and we should be able to compete with just about everyone on our schedule.
I'm calling for the USD victory tomorrow 31-24. Go Yotes!

My daughter is getting married tomorrow so I'm missing the game. I think it's the first Coyote game I've missed in 3 years. I really hope our defense plays well, and gives our offense some decent field position. If we are going to win some games this year, I also think we have to grind it out and win the game of field position. Not sure what to expect....my heart is with my daughter but my phone will be on Gametracker...lol

I do believe tonight that the Coyotes might need to win the yardage battle and if they want to win I believe they will HAVE to win the yardage battle. With the poor special teams and a real lack of taking advantage of opportunities for the Yotes could even things up for UC Davis despite giving up the total yards battle to the Coyotes.
My keys to the game.
If UC Davis is going to win they have to focus on going toe to toe with the Yotes and figure out a way to grind out more total yards than South Dakota. If they can do that I believe being at home and being able to win the special teams battle and with intangibles I believe they will win and maybe win big.
If South Dakota is going to win they need to do 2 things well. Don't miss field goal opportunities and don't give away yards on special teams by blowing coverages. They also need to take advantage of their chances when they get into Davis territory and especially the red zone. The Coyotes have never been much of an opportunistic team and typically need to win the yardage battle to win a game. If the Yotes don't win special teams and aren't terribly opportunistic either they are likely going to have to win the yardage battle by at least 150 yards. I will put the over under at 4.3 yards per carry in the run game. If the Coyotes can get to that point or above they will win, if they don't they will lose.
I judge this team based on this game and the 8 MVFC games. I don't judge the Coyotes based on the games against K-State or Drake, unless they had beaten K-State or lose to Drake.

KSU went on the road and beat UTSA 30-3 this morning. They weren't given the special teams gifts we had for them last week and put up over 400 yards in a hostile environment, plus UTSA could only get 37 yards on 25 carries. If KSU was giving us their best shot then all this makes our performance look a lot more favorable.

I think wewould all like to see this but that might require Wesley to call something new. I've been going to games for 7 years now and it has been the same plays over and over and over and over.........
