UNI has breathed some life back into their season with their win over SDSU. UNI needs to win out if they are to have a shot at the playoffs so they shouldn't be taking us lightly at all, especially considering our thrilling victory over the Panthers in our last visit to Cedar Falls. UNI started conference play 0-3 but look at the three teams they lost to, the three teams currently sitting in the top three spots in the MVFC with all three games being settled by a single score.
Haven't watched UNI play this year but looking at the stat sheets their big team strength is in stopping the run. If we can find a way to pick up yards on the ground we should be able to complement it through the air as UNI has given up a great number of yards passing. I am not worried about the defense taking care of business, so I believe if we can establish the run game and limit turnovers and penalties we can come away with the win. I admit this is a rather generic take on the game, but if we can approach 200 yards on the ground I believe we will win (we average 190, they allow 140 on average). MSU was no challenge, time for our new backs to really show what they are capable of against a stout rush defense.
A win would be massive for us. Due to our crap record the past few years basically every win is big but a win against UNI would be especially big as it would put us above .500 in the MVFC and maybe even heat up the playoff talks (we would absolutely be ranked if we win). We are thankfully not trying to shake any streaks of futility like our last trip to Cedar Falls when we won our first road game in an eternity. I'd like to travel to go to the game but already have plans for the day. UNI has potential to be a new regional rival if we can find some sustained success against them, something that would be very good for our program. I know I would love to see that happen just because of personal experience with the town and school.
Let's make it a good one. Go Yotes!

A win against UNI would definitely be huge for USD. It will be interesting to see how well UNI will play. They looked good against NDSU and nearly pulled the upset in the FargoDome and then barely beat SDSU who I thought looked terrible on Saturday. If the Coyotes can play a smart game and limit self inflicted wounds I think they win in a close one. USD 24 UNI 20

Last years game in Vermillion was a 27-16 loss. Statistically, the game was dead even. We had two critical interceptions at strategic points in the game. We also had a ton of penalties that cost us as well. We threw the ball fairly well, but had trouble running the ball. I think this game is going to come down to mistakes ( penalties ) and the kicking game.

What I remember most about our game against UNI last year was neat uniforms and people in purple yelling at me to sit down and claiming they were alumni (even if they do have diplomas from USD they deserve someone standing and blocking their view for cheering for the wrong team). USD lost but I am glad I could do what I could to ruin their experience. Stood the entire time we were on defense.

I see a slugfest happening in Cedar falls this Saturday. Both teams have been strong defensively this year, although the Yotes hit a speed bump at WIU. Both teams rely on the run to move the ball. UNI plays with 2 QBs, 1 pocket type and one runner. It will be interesting to see which one gets the majority of the snaps against us. Our offensive line must continue the trend of being physical and controlling the LOS. I envision a game similar to NDSU in the fact that it will be relatively low scoring and it will come down to the last drive or 2 in the 4th quarter. Yotes win 20-17.
Coyotes start a different type of streak this week, a winning streak!
Go Yotes!

As an outside observer with no direct ties to USD, great job this year! You have people like my brother (a USD alum) excited for football games and fans who root for the underdog pulling for you! Those players are playing hard, coaches making good calls and motivating them well. Congrats true fans who have stuck with them as well! Now saying that, this would be just another signature win for the yotes... They are playing a good UNI team that might be down just enough this yr to pull out the win. A W here would prove a lot.

I watched the bunnies play UNI on tv while I listened to the Yotes last weekend. UNI looked tough – If #10 could catch, it could’ve easily been 21-7. Yotes need to keep the momentum going with another big road win. Yotes 17, UNI 14.

What this one will come down to is whether or not we can get the ground game going again. If we can run the ball, our offense is really pretty efficient. The strength of this UNI team is their defense. If we can put points on the board, I'm confident we will come home from Cedar Falls with a win. I don't think the UNI offense is anything to write home about and our defense has been playing very well as of late. So, again, if we can put points on the board, we will win this one.

One would think a game plan similar to NDSU would be in the works. Control the ball, establish the running game with the Frosh RBs and QB read. We need to be able to run the ball so that we can get into some play-action and Saeger doesn't have to be strictly a pocket passer. If UNI can force USD to be one dimensional then we are in trouble. You saw that last weekend when state couldn't run the ball and then the UNI d-line teed off on the QBs. The bunnies had been pretty explosive on offense prior to last week, so the Yotes need to step up to the challenge up front and get after this UNI front 7.
Defensively, listening to coach Glenn on 99.1 in Sioux Falls yesterday, it all revolves around their running QB Bailey. Glenn says that he is being looked at by NFL scouts as a tailback at the next level. Assignment football is a must. The 2 games that I have seen him in he torched NDSU and the bunnies on the ground when they didn't focus on their assignments. This will be a big game for our LBs, as they will most likely be responsible for handling the QB in the read-option game. From what I have seen and heard, Bailey is not much of a threat in the passing game.
Special teams need to be solid. Control and change field position and Bergner needs to make kicks when we send him out just like last weekend.
We need a solid game from all 3 phases to bring home a win. i expect us to do just that.

Our board is eerily quiet this week despite having two wins in a row with a winnable game against a named opponent on Saturday. What scares me about UNI is their backs are against the wall if they hold any hope of making the playoffs, they have to win out. Also, they are a running team, and much like us, their aim is to control the line of scrimmage and just wear us down. Sound similar?
The good news is they are just another good team in the Valley, not great. They also had NDSU beat in Fargo but let it slip away. They beat a pretty good SDSU team in Brookings last week, and the score was closer than it should've been. They aren't overpowering on offense, but their defense is solid. Sound familiar? Who is going to impose their will on the other? Will it be the Pathers, or will it be the Coyotes?

Nice points here. Bailey has me concerned, a QB this mobile is not something you see everyday. When you look at UNI's resume, they have been a mess offensively in games where Bailey has been unable to get anything on the ground. Bailey, much like Saeger lately, excels when hes out of the pocket and able to create with his legs. illinois State and Western were able to lock up Bailey on the ground and make him a passer only, which clearly isnt a huge strength for him. I would expect both defenses in this game to be working a lot this week on QB containment. Honestly, I think this game comes down to QB play. I think we may struggle to run the ball effectively as UNI has the best rushing defense in the league so far giving up only 3.1 per carry and 130 per game. Keep in mind theyve done that against some of the best rushing teams in the league (SDSU, NDSU, Illinois State, Western). Hopefully Wes gets creative with the playbook or it may be a struggle on the ground. MY guess is we will find out what Saeger is made of Saturday. My 3 keys to the game just like my man Andre Fields does: QB Play- Can Saeger be a pocket passer/can USD contain Bailey on the ground Turnover battle Special Teams-Clean game on returns and coverages

Saeger is coming along and doing better week by week. I do miss the days of Noah Shepard and not just him specifically. I miss the feeling of knowing that no matter who we played that we had the best QB on the field that day.

Watching Coyote Corner Jay pointed out just how stingy the defense has been lately. 10 points allowed in the last 7 quarters. UNI's mobile QB can throw a wrench into any defense but if we can keep that kind of defense up every game will be ours to lose. Stopping that guy may just be what this game pivots on.
I'm really hoping that this is the game that Paul Anderson finally breaks one for a score. Saturday I was saying it was only a matter of time before he did just as he made his return that was called back for a penalty. That guy is deadly back there. Special teams have been a strength lately outside of the one return we gave up against Missouri State where everyone seemed to get stuck on each other. The coverage has been stellar outside of that one play and Miles is nailing all of his kicks.
It's looking like I'll be squeeze this game into my day after all. I would really like to go instead but at least I'll watch it live.

I have been kind of waiting for this game for 3 weeks. I had to miss the NDSU game but didn't think it would be a game so wasn't really looking forward to it that much and was that ever a false belief. The game against Missouri State didn't hold alot of intrigue either because the Yotes were always going to win this game regardless of their record coming in. Finally a game of intrigue in my opinion and that will be the case for the next 4 weeks although the Yotes will be a significant dog at Illinois State to end the year.
South Dakota and Northern Iowa are both kind of reinvigorated. The Yotes gained momentum against NDSU and just kind of stayed at an even keel through the Missouri State game. UNI has been very close this year and finally got over the top vs SDSU in what was a huge win for them. For the Coyotes they kind of get to prove this week weather the NDSU game was just one of those Saturdays or if there is more to it than that.
For me it just simply comes down to who can be trusted and I think that goes to UNI this week. The Yotes had a great game against the Bison but also had a couple of stinkers thrown in there. UNI seems to have been a bit more consistent even in their losses. I don't think UNI is a good matchup at all for the Coyotes. Any team that can take away the run for the Yotes is going to create some big problems. Youngstown did it for the most part and the Yotes had no way around it. The Coyotes are going to need to be more proficient throwing the football and I think the Yotes should actually come out throwing the ball and use it to setup the run. I would like to see the formations spread out more on offense but maybe that is just not Glenn's style.
I see this as a murphy's law game for the Coyotes. I think a few turnovers and a few penalties will prove fatal. I believe that UNI will be able to move the ball better on USD's defense than most people think. The dome field advantage will be important in this one as well and I think UNI will come out ready to play and control this one from the onset.
