Has to be someone with head coaching experience that has put a staff together before, but not necessarily a current head coach. Beyond that any of options 1-4 are reasonable choices. When we opened up the MBB job we had plenty of highly qualified applicants come forward in spite of the one-year contracts but we also opened the checkbook. Not sure the AD can open the checkbook at this point for a highly qualified football coach and staff.

Also if Joe Glenn is hanging it up this year I'm not sure he does so immediately after the Illinois State game should we win. It might be a one in a million shot but a 6-5 team that went 4-4 in the MVFC with wins over NDSU and Illinois State may be a playoff team. Never had a 24 team playoff field in an 11 game season so there is no precedence for or against such a situation.

I don't necessarily think it needs to be someone with head coaching experience. A highly qualified coordinator from an FBS school might be an option. I have seen a lot of people mention Glenn Caruso's name in previous threads and I think he would be a phenomenal hire but I don't see him leaving his current situation anytime soon. He has expressed that he is very happy in D3 and leaving the twin cities for Vermillion with a wife and 3 kids would be a tough sell. I highly successful D2 coach is probably the safest route to go IMO. I agree that the ability to form a staff or even bring one with you from the previous job should a lucrative quality to an AD.
I don't think hiring from within is an option. I just don't see anybody with MVFC head coaching credentials on this current staff.

Sounds like most people would like Joe to return so it's quite unproductive to speculate on new coachs. It's also bad for recruiting because many people do read chat boards to get a feel for the climate around the program. If it turns out we are in the market for a new coach then let the speculation begin but for now we have coachs

yoteforever, I think all options need to be out on the table. I am actually intrigued by certain names in each of 1-4 above. I will get to those in a minute. Here are a couple things that I think are important, in addition to resume. a) There needs to be a general connection to the Midwest and an understanding of the people/culture. They don't have to be from SD. I genuinely think that if you are going to recruit to USD, you need to be able to sell South Dakota and Vermillion. You can't do that easily unless you believe in what you are selling. Craig Smith seems to be able to do this. I think Joe does this. b) I tend to believe that HC experience is significant, regardless of what level it has taken place. For example, Craig Smith has been a head coach before at Mayville State, but his most recent experience was as an assistant at NDSU, CSU and Nebraska. c) Along the same lines as b) above, I want to see FCS experience. I don't care that it comes as an assistant or HC. This is primarily for an understanding of the talent level and the recruiting experience. d) A willingness and a passion to recruit is essential. Along those lines, even though I don't think it necessarily needs to be the head coach, I think he needs to be able to bring in assistants, GAs and staff that are on the cutting edge and know how to communicate with young people. This is marketing, branding, social media, style, etc. Recently I think this is something that our current staff has done pretty well to embrace, even though this obviously isn't something that Joe does. e) I want a classy guy. I will beat this horse to death, but I can't stand a coach that puts himself first, embarrasses his school and leaves his players out to dry. You can be funny, cynical and passionate without being a mouth breathing gorilla. Joe is a prime example of a guy that represents USD at an A+ level. f) I am not enamored with youth at the HC level so long as the coach is willing to adapt with the times. Also, I think a willingness to bring in a diverse staff ethnically, culturally, and with experience is a best practice. You need to be able to bring in guys that will challenge each other, not just be "yes" men. With all of the above being said, here are a couple thoughts on items 1-4 from YF: 1) FCS HC - If the guy can come to SD, adapt to the culture and buy-in, I think this is the best case scenario. I would love to see a guy that has had great success in a "lesser" conference want to come to the MVFC for a better challenge. I don't really have many names here. What makes this one hard is that we probably can't say to a coach like this "hey, come to USD where you will have FAR better resources than at XYZ University." One name that has intrigue, although hasn't had "great"success yet, is Bob Nielson at Western Illinois. He did have great success as the HC at UM-Duluth in D2, however. He is also making material improvements at WIU, generally considered the MVFC program with the least resources. 2) D2 or D3 HC - This one may be the most realistic. This is also where I want to see a guy that has some FCS experience, however. With other friends have said that the more evidence there is of Joe building the right culture here, the more I suspect that Jed Stugart's name enters the fray. He isn't Joe and he has his own staff, but they are buddies, Jed coached under Joe at UNC and I think they may be cut from a similar cloth. I have heard that an essential compliment to Jed is his DC, who is highly regarded. 3) FBS Coordinator - The intrigue will always be highest here, but also carries with it the most risk - especially if the guy has been a lifetime assistant with no HC experience. At the same time, this is where you will get some big names and/or systems. A familiar name from a big program that also carries HC experience and a connection to USD is Brad Salem. He is the current QB coach and recruiting coordinator at Michigan State and was the successful HC at Augustana. I suspect he may be pining for a bigger gig and is out of our price range. Another "big name" with high intrigue and SD ties, but no HC experience, is Josh Heupel. He lost his job at OU because Big Game Bob needed a scapegoat and couldn't fire his brother, the DC. Josh is currently the OC at Utah State. Are there intriguing names at other regional FBS schools? Is there anybody running an innovative system? 4) MVFC Coordinator - I haven't considered this fully, but I think there is probably great opportunity here. Addressing both 3 and 4, the "obvious" name would be Kalen DeBoer. He built up USF, he was the OC at Southern Illinois and is now the OC at Eastern Michigan. I just can't really speak in detail to the level of success he has had.

As an OC I think Kalen DeBoer has not had the same level of success as when he was a head coach. I don't know if that means he was a great NAIA head coach or what. Hopefully Joe continues on but if he doesn't, I could get behind Kalen IF his partner in crime Kurtiss Riggs was involved too. Either as his OC or Kalen being his OC.

1) FCS Head Coach- I don't know how likely this is due the the 1 year contract thing and who would realistically make a lateral move to the toughest conference in the nation if they are having success somewhere else.
2) D2-D3 HC- Names that come to mind with SD ties....Stugart(USF), Caruso( St. Thomas, MN.), Hoffner (MSU-Mankato), Glogowski (Simpson, IA)...out of these I would say that Stugart is the most realisitic, Caruso would be a great fit but he's not leaving D3. Hoffner would apply for the job I bet, but not sure about his fit. Glo is a great motivator and outstanding Coyote, but not sure he would be the man for the job.
3)FBS Coordinator- Don't know that we could pay enough to get a high quality FBS coordinator to Vermillion, and this would more that likely be a stepping stone job for a guy in this position. DeBoer would be on the radar but would he leave a MAC school for a head Valley job. I would think he is trying to work his way into a least an opportunity as a HC in the MAC. EMU is not exactly setting the world on fire in the MAC either at 1-10.
4) MVFC/ FCS coordinator- I would say that this, along with a D2/D3 coach is the most likely route. The OC at NDSU is probably ready for a HC position from what I know of him (which is as much as everybody else does). Not sure if annoys the staff at ISU red would be interested
I think my initial top candidates list would go like this:
1) Joe Glenn (coyote through and through/ stability)
2) Glenn Caruso (best motivator I have ever been around/ class act/ has turned around every program he has been a part of as OC or HC very quickly and maintained that success, we would really have to pay the man to get him even think about this one I think)
3) Jed Stugart (best available D2 coach in the region IMO/ seems like he would fit in perfectly with Coyote Nation/ understands the culture of the program)
4) WILD CARD** Scott Strohmeier, Head Coach at Iowa Western CC in Council Bluffs. Have been one of the best JUCO programs in the nation the past 5-6 years since he started the program in 2008. He would have recruiting knowledge and be able to judge high FCS talent and have connections nationwide in recruiting. He also runs a pass happy spread offense, which in the Dome could be very dangerous. i know a couple of people would love to see "Basketball on Turf" for the USD offense...lol. This one would be risky, though.

If your only yardstick for success is records you are truly missing the point. But that is OK I should have figured that would be your response. It's not the only yardstick just the biggest one. If the Yotes are a losing football team but the coach is a nice guy who cares. I have said this before but there are a million nice guys in the world but that doesn't make them all good football coaches. Whether a coach is nice or not isn't real relevant to the success of a football program. How nice the head football coach is ranks about #100 in the qualities one wants in a program. It's certainly not a bad thing but just not that big of a deal. I would not call it the biggest yardstick just the easiest. Perhaps you could think about how you perceive the purpose of sport in college. I suppose you could say I like a more traditional purpose of sport. A test of manhood, residence, skill, that it factor that helps a person in time of great stress. If you only want to be entertained I would suggest a rethink and then this discussion will more more sense to you.

Whether a coach is nice or not isn't real relevant to the success of a football program. How nice the head football coach is ranks about #100 in the qualities one wants in a program. It's certainly not a bad thing but just not that big of a deal. Spoken like somebody that never played the game. For somebody that demands unrealistic results, you sure are set on making this program toxic to recruits. The "Joe Glenn factor" has brought more talent to this university than we could have ever fathomed with Ed or anybody else. How do you think we compete with the XDSUs or the UNIs for recruits? Brag about our stellar record and outdated facilities? No, you sit them down and prove to them that you're as committed to their success as they are to the program's. There's nobody that does that better than Joe Glenn. Why is it that USD fans always bring up how nice of a guy Joe Glenn is? It's almost as if him being nice and the players liking him is a free pass to play losing football. Sure Glenn brings in talent to the program, but about 8 other programs in the Valley are bringing in talent that is as good or better than what USD is getting. USD is lagging behind when in comparison to what their peers are doing. Do I make the program toxic to recruits or do I simply bring up objective arguments and facts. How exactly do I demand unrealistic results. Is demanding a competitive team unrealistic. Is hoping for a .500 record being unrealistic. I am simply wanting to have a fresh start to a program that is 6-26 in their conference ovr Glenn's tenure. Is that seriously unreasonable. I have as much right to critisize others for accepting those results and wanting to continue down the same path that created that futility in the first place. We are not talking about a program that went 16-16 in conference, or 12-22, or even 9-25. We are talking about 6-26 (assuming a loss at Illinois State). No one in their right mind would have accepted a coach 4 years ago that was about to post that kind of record in his first 4 years. No one would have hired Glenn knowing that. So now that he is here why do things suddenly change for so many people.

Heres the deal im proposing to the board. I'm extending an olive branch to Coytefan to make peace and move forward with discussions about moving forward and looking towards the future of Coyote football. Let's debate, discuss, and throw it all out there in the name of improving where we are at? In return, no more dumpster fire comments, or I played and you didn't, or I give and you don't. Fair? Assume my gut feeling is right, and Joe resigns. Here's the discussion points in my opinion: 1.) Do you look for a successful head coach at an already established FCS school and steal them? 2.) Do you look for a successful D2 coach, or even highly successful D3 coach that would be eager to take the job? 3.) Do you look for a coordinator at an FBS school that would jump to become head coach? 4.) Do you look for a coordinator say in the MVFC that is successful and wants a head job? Or maybe a coordinator with ties to the Midwest? 5.) Do you look at someone from current staff? In other words, what opinion does everyone have on what type of coach do you have in mind as being the perfect fit? Next question: Are you willing to bring someone in that may bring some charecteristics we aren't used to in order to win? I'm not saying drawing NCAA penalties, I'm just suggesting some athletes that can win games but maybe have charecter issues? In other words, are you willing to win at all costs short of violations? I'm tired of fighting, I want to fix this thing. A such as I want the current staff to have one more year, I don't think its gonna happen. The chalkboard is being wiped clean. I am generally a pretty forgiving person in general. If I wasn't I would have been gone a decade ago and long before the days of this message board when Coyote fans were on the D2 board. I will accept your olive branch yoteforever. I am who I am and I may have opinions that you may not agree with and that goes both ways. A differing of opinion is what makes a message board worthwhile. I will try to be careful with the dumpster fire comments but I have to be fair to myself and be realistic to myself. I am stubborn at times but I believe in my way of thinking and my way of reasoning to come to the conclusions that I do. I am not always right and I will admit when I am wrong. I will also take the time to explain any of my comments if anyone needs me to elaborate on them.

It's policy from the board of regents. It applies to all state employees hired by the universities. It's antiquated and needs to change to join the 21st century.

Sorry didn't cover this in my last post. I think options 1-4 would all be possibilities but not 5 because no one is qualified. We need a Craig Smith or Amy Williams type hire for the next head coach. Someone that is on the younger side and that has plenty of upside. One thing we definately cannot worry about is whether that head coach may end up jumping to a higher level if he has success at USD. I would rather have a coach that has success and moves on because success breeds success so by that time maybe someone on that staff would be qualified to take over the reigns. I don't really believe in limiting a head coaching search to just a couple of criteria. Some really good coaches at lower levels would definately be acceptable if the right candidate were available. Stuugart from USF is one coach that comes to mind that would be interesting to look at. Not that he would be a slam dunk or anything but he certainly should be able to throw hit hat in the ring if he wants to. Glen Caruso comes to mind as another intriguing possibility. He may have run the best offense in USD history. Same with other candidates as well as far as whether they should be considered. I am not 100% against hiring a coordinator from a school by any means but I would lean against one if they didn't have history of success as a head coach.
I am of firm belief that USD is fully capable of hiring a very good coach, probably better than anyone would think. The MVFC is a place that is very attractable to aspiring head coaches. USD being where they are are in a good position for a head coach to want to make his or her (ha ha JK) mark. Look at Boot's. There are many that thought there was no way USD would hire a coach as good as him. I don't think many people would trade Craig Smith for a Boots clone. Look at the Women's program. Chad Lavin was irreplacable, than came along Ryun Williams and he was certainly irreplacable and now look at what we have. Amy Williams is a budding superstar coach. Glenn is a very average coach at this stage of his career but I predict 2 years after the Coyotes hire a new coach (if that is to indeed happen) that we will ever wonder why we were wanting to keep Glenn around as long as we were.

Interesting name. Deboer was a hot name just after he left USF. It seemed like he didn't have great success at Southern Illinois at least for awile. I had actually lost track of where he was. It looks like his name could be heating up again as a somewhat desirable option.
