The Search for the Coyotes Next Head Coach

Following the "where there is smoke, there is fire" line of thinking, I am coming to accept that the choice will be Jed Stugart. As I said way back in another thread, this may be the consideration with the belief that there can be some continuity in culture (I am not saying scheme or play calling) from Joe Glenn to Jed.

This also brings together some of the comments that have been made publicly and from new posters on here.

Herbster said he hoped that this could be a similar timeline to Craig Smith, two weeks. Despite my distaste for JT from ESPN, he was initially pretty confident about his "scoop" that it would be Jed.

Herbster said all current coaches would be guaranteed an interview with the new coach. I know there is at least a casual relationship between Jed and both Petrino and Breske. There are also a couple other things that I have noticed in public social media forums that would suggest recent interaction between some of the interested parties.

This is not an endorsement or condemnation, just pure speculation.


FWIW, I have been told by a person that I trust implicitly that if Jed is the guy, he definitely needs to bring along his DC, Tremaine Jackson, in some sort of capacity. Apparently he is very highly regarded as a coach and recruiter. His profile is below, but I really like that he is from Houston, TX and his present recruiting territory includes Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. This fits in very well with our present recruiting footprint - especially after coach Biagi has been putting in so much time recruiting down in the Houston area.

Taking this a step further, I looked at the last couple of recruiting classes for USF. Not that anything here is a shocker, but the makeup of the classes has been heavy with SD (not Sioux Falls though), MN, WI, IA, NE and CO with a littering of WY, CA, KS, MO, OK, AZ, TX, FL and IL. Right where we want to be and currently are. Again, nothing earth shattering, but it might help us retain some recruiting relationships.

If we go with Stugart then is there a point in opening up the checkbook? His current salary isn't public and I don't know what it is, but he seems like a guy that we could hire by paying what we have been under Joe. I'll support whoever is hired but can't say I'm excited about what he brings from my limited research.

I'm pretty sure as a usf follower that Jed surgery was thw offensive play caller. Tremaine jackson has been the d coordinator for the last two yrs after his predecessor was let go.

Not sure about his duties at USF, but Stugart has been a defensive coach for his entire career.  Coached d-line, LBs, and was DC at Northern Colorado, HC/DC at Mid-America Nazarene, and LB coach at UNLV prior to coming to USF.  Info was pulled from USF website.

That would be a definite lateral move in OCs, in not a step backwards in my opinion. The combo of Stugart as HC and Hovorka as OC is not very appealing to this Yote fan, seems like a downgrade in coaching to me.

College Sports Solutions has been hired to assist in a national search for our head coaching position. The list of potential candidates has been made and they are working the list down to a number they can have interviews with. We are searching across all divisions of the NCAA, but that really comes as no surprise as in this thread people at all levels of the NCAA have been named.

I believe it was a mix of the two with dusty being thw primary signal caller. Though the thought is that coach stugert was the player on some conservative calls this yr when usf was up big. Usf offense put up huge numbers this yr, 2nd or 3rd in the nsic.

Just to be clear, I did not suggest that Hovorka would be the new OC for Stugert in my prediction.

When I saw that USD hired a firm to assist with the coaching search that was the best news I have heard all football season and right up their with the NDSU upset. They will be of huge assistance in this process and will probably put out names that maybe Herbster would not have seriously considered. I am so happy that Herbster decided to go this route and I think he is a smart man for having done it. It is vital to get this right and if it takes 2 more weeks than it would have originally it's 2 weeks well spent despite the recruiting setbacks. It's 1000 times more important to take the time necessary than to rush the hire just to get a little bit more time recruiting. It would be nice if this consulting firm would go as far as to have a rep sit in on the interviews as well. They are a professional firm for a reason because they know what the h**l they are doing.

We did hire a search firm for the Craig Smith hire as well but it's my recollection that we still ended up narrowing the list down to guys with local connections that were all on our radar anyways.

Correct. There still needs to be a cultural fit.
