South Dakota just is not a destination job unless you are someone like Joe Glenn with a passion for USD. We are in most coaching searches going to be looking for someone who will ideally be getting looks from FBS schools five years after we hire them, and that's just fine with me because we would be winning a lot of games if this is the case.
Bob Nielsen is nearing the age where his next job may be his last, but it's not at all unheard of for a 61 year old (Nielsen in five years) to be hired for FBS head coaching positions. Hard to tell if his interest in USD would be as the place he wants to retire at or his launching pad to an FBS head coaching job. At any rate hiring the reigning MVFC coach of the year is an easy decision to make.

After some thought but maybe not thorough enough research my top 2 that I would like to see the Yotes hire are Caruso or Deboer. I put Nielsen and Stugart on the tier below them.
My feeling is that more often than not those that approved of the Joe Glenn era and are happy with the era would also tend to want Nielsen to be the next coach. Although he is a solid candidate is not in my personal top tier. For those that like a really strong defense Nielsen may not be your guy based on how Western Illinois did this year. For those that like a tough defense that stops the run the Leather Necks finished the Valley 8th in total defense and also 8th against the run. They also finished 2nd in the league in passing and only 7th in rushing offense which actually surprises me a bit because I thought they were more run oriented. So for those 3 yards and a could of dust people Nielsen might not be as close to that as some people may think. They don't run well consider how good their running back is and don't stop the run that well either. My biggest issue with him is age more than anything. He may not get better but just older. That remains to be seen. I don't hate him as a candidate by any means there are just a couple that I like more. I will need to do a little more research on Caruso and Deboer but I do know that Caruso was not a good offense mind but a great one. DeBoer kicked major butt at USF.
One thing that also needs to be considered is that we need to make sure that the coordinators are up to the task. If the head coach does not have an idea of who they want to come with them than I may be a little worried. Basically if the coaching candidate would consider keeping Wes as OC than that application needs to be put through the shredder. Sorry, it's just the truth.

Those that approved of Joe Glenn are happy with Nielsen? So basically everyone must be wanting Nielsen? That's what I'm getting from you CF.

In my opinion it should be Nielson who gets the nod if he wants it. What a home run hire that would be for USD, to steal the Coach of the Year away from a playoff team (and a team that throttled USD 40-21) . Comparing him and Deboer is extremely difficult overall. Deboer is his mid-40s coming from a MAC school. While I know that the coaches in that conference know how to score points, Deboer was not that impressive as a coordinator from what I see. 9th in the conference in total offense (their defense was also ranked dead last). I really do not like to use NAIA experience as an indicator due to the lack recruiting rules and he is coming from a team whose only win was against Wyoming (who the 'Fighting Sqawks' beat). Now I'm not here to say that either of them are bad candidates, but Nielson knows what situation he would be getting into and what it takes. The only question would be if Western Illinois decided to hire from within, doing that would probably leave Nielson out of a coordinating spot and leave jobs open on both staffs.
Expecting a hire by Friday or Monday would be about the soonest I would expect a hire, but overall on the surface it would appear that Stugart and Beschorner will not be getting the job.

What's the consensus on DeBoer's time at EMU? The team is garbage, 2-21 against FBS competition during his time there, but EMU has been awful at football as long as I have been watching college football.

Since we are hiring a head coach I put a higher priority on what a candidate did as a head coach. Deboer was the one that built or at least continued a foundation that put USF in a good position to transition to D2. USF's excellence at the NAIA level had a carryover effect to D2. They just know winning football at that school. If would have been one thing if DeBoer was just simply good at USF but he dominated at USF. They pretty much blew out everyone they played in their conference and did well in the post season as well under him. Sure it's NAIA and that does play a factor but they played under the same rules that their competitors played under and still dominated.

I do agree that Western Illinois's defense is kind of a reason to laugh out loud. People talk about what this guy has done at Western Illinois but what he did at UMD is more impressive. I personally don't think he has done enough at Western Illinois yet or done it for long enough to determine if he will be a good coach in this league. He finished 5-3 in the league this year but it's not like he has dominated at Western Illinois as of yet. If you want to argue his case the UMD part of his resume might be the most telling. I am not doing back flips about a 57 year old coach. He is solid but it's not like he is heads and shoulders above everyone else that is apparently applying.

Do you have any concept of what Nielsen has done at Western Illinois in three short years? The team went 1-7 in MVFC play the two years before Nielsen took over and they are already a playoff team. He wasn't awarded MVFC coach of the year for nothing.

I like how a couple of days ago you thought it was unfathomable as to why Nielsen would ever consider coming to USD, now he is a lower level candidate? The reason I said that it didn't make sense for him to come to USD is because it is a lateral move just when he is starting to get things going at Western. I would think for his career it would make sense to stay a couple of more years and prove himself there first and then take a step up not a step sideways. I am playing devils advocate with him right now. It seems like USD fans are getting a little too facinated with him right now. If everyone was dissing him I would probably be hyping him up. People are way too obsessed with the Valley. There are good coaches out there that are not in the Valley that could do a good job within the conference. It doesn't necessarily take experience in the Valley to do good in the Valley, see NDSU and SDSU when they first joined. I just simply think the upside is higher with Deboer and Caruso than I think it is with Nielsen. It's a free country so people can disagree with that and I am sure there are valid reasons for disagreeing. Basically what I am saying is that it's not all rose petals as Western Illinois does have some weaknesses within the league especially on defense and there are alot of people that value a strong D as do I. I like facts and I like them alot and I will continue to bring them up. Western Illinois actually scored 224 points on offense and gave up 260 on D so their 5-3 record can easily be misleading.

Here is some more info on DeBoer. I know this is NAIA but my gosh he wasn't good at USF, he wasn't great at USF, he was amazing at USF.
2000-2004 was OC at USF
Head coach
2005: 11-2 lost in NAIA semi-final 2006: 14-0 won NAIA national title 2007: 13-1 lost in NAIA championship game 2008: 14-0 won NAIA national title 2009: 15-0 won NAIA national title
He is 67-3 in his head coaching career proving he is a damn good CEO of a program.
2010-2013 was AC/OC/WR coach at Southern Illinois 2014-present is OC/QB coach at Eastern Michigan
His best coaching job most definitely happened as head coach. He was not as effective as a coordinator or positions coach. For me I value what someone did as head coach the most, but that is just me.

He wasn't awarded MVFC coach of the year for nothing. I never said he wasn't a solid candidate but he may not be the savior that some think he is. I just think there are better candidates. All you have ever talked about is how you want a candidate that has unquestionable success to be the next head coach. DeBoer is highly questionable, did well at USF, but what has he done since he left that makes him a splash hire? Caruso is great, but has only been a head coach at the D3 level, he has been dominant, but it would be a huge leap in competition in terms of the talent he is facing and the coaches he is facing in MVFC. Neilson is a proven commodity. He won a NC at UMD, he took a MVFC doormat to the 2nd round of the playoffs in his 3rd year at WIU. He has done nothing but make whatever program he takes over better. How can you say that he is a lower level candidate compared to 2 less proven coaches. All the dude does is win at a high level. I don't care how old the guy is, if USD could swipe him from WIU, that would be a major coup in the valley. Reigning MVFC coach of the year, going to another conference school whom he just destroyed a couple months earlier, would be the story of the off-season in the Valley. I am not knocking either of the candidates that you have mentioned, but the logic that you used to downgrade Neilson compared to DeBoer and Caruso is mind-boggling. So his defense wasn't great statistically, who cares? You know what statistic matters most, wins and losses, you said it all year. Dude went to the 2nd round of the playoffs. The 2nd round, and lost to a likely final-4 team in ISUr. EMU sucked when DeBoer got there, guess what, they still suck. You know who doesn't suck? WIU, you know why? Bob Neilson. I rest my case Go Yotes!

More info on Glen Caruso. I think everyone knows what kind of an offensive mind this guy has.
1997-2001: NDSU assistant 2002: NDSU OC 2003: Wisc-Eau Claire OL 2004-2005: Do Coyote fans need to be reminded what this was like
St. Thomas Head Coach
2008: 7-3 2009: 11-2, lost in D3 quarterfinal 2010: 12-1, lost in D3 quarterfinal 2011: 13-1, lost in D3 semi-finals 2012: 14-1, lost in D3 championship game 2013: 8-2 2014: 8-3, lost in D3 first round 2015: 8-0 at last report, still in D3 playoffs
For his standards he actually slumped a bit in 13 and 14 but has it in full gear again this season. His record is also impressive but quite honestly are any of the candidates as dominant as Deboer was as head coach.
