Yes, the difference can be covered. When you're making a serious investment into something, you don't trip over nickel/dime items. USD knows they need to pay the going rate. You can use the phrase "can they afford it?" I will counter by saying "they can't afford not to."

There is no point in being D1 if we aren't going to invest significantly more into this. I thinks it's been pretty well stated that we are going to pay the next guy a lot more than we paid Joe. Probably at least 190k depending on who the hire is.

If he plans on moving wouldn't you think he stays at WIU 1 more year to see if he makes a deeper run into the playoffs then move onto an FCS school which would be his last stop.

It's not a rebuild at USD though. Nielsen might be inheriting just as much, if not more, talent as he had at his disposal over at WIU. I sincerely doubt he is interviewing with us just for the hell of it. I don't think he is looking for an FCS school to retire with but an FCS school to take launch him to the FBS ranks. Western Illinois is bumping up against a ceiling right now and the FBS offers aren't coming his way as of yet. He could very well spend three years here at USD, get credit for another MVFC turnaround and be able to have a very good shot at taking over an FBS program. It's safe to say Nielsen understands the situation he is in better than any of us. He must see USD as a good opportunity and I can see a few reasons why. If USD had just fired the football coach and the team were in shambles this wouldn't even be a thought for Nielsen. There is a great foundation though and an easy opportunity to get credit for turning the program around for whoever does get the job.

I hope this is true. Nielsen is my top choice and just about the epitome of a can't miss hire if he'll come here.

Popping up all over now. Happy to have this (close) to the finish line. I think this is a perfect fit.
To those that wanted offense, passing and excitement, buckle up. Bob Nielson's offense is a true Hurry Up, No Huddle offense. I think he is going to have a heyday on the turf in the dome with the skill position players we have acquired.

Can't wait to see what he can do with the likes of these guys in a HUNH Offense:
Shamar Jackson Calvin Strong Michael Fredrick Trevor Bouma Nate Gunn DeValon Whitcomb Aaron Ramsey Brandon Storebo Riley Donovan (if healthy) Tacari Carpenter Paul Anderson Eric Saintil Danny Rambo Brant Van Roekel Nickel Meyers

I have a feeling this will make Herbie 3 for 3 on great hires. Can't say enough about the decisions he's made.

Let's not assume this is a sure thing until someone in our athletic department weighs in.

Sounds like this may not be a done deal. Would be curious on the initial source. Did this info come from USD directly?

From Football Scoop:
"South Dakota: Sources tell FootballScoop that Western Illinois head coach Bob Nielson acknowledged the offer to become South Dakota’s head coach to his players at a 6pm meeting tonight but told them he has not accepted that offer at this time."
We have offered and await his response apparently. I have zero inside information but I get the impression from this that Nielson will be taking the weekend to mull this over. Curious what the deadline on this offer is.
