The word that I'm seeing is Nielson has no intention of accepting our offer. Now left to wonder why he even bothered applying. Tweet from their local media imply USD's $$$ offer was not enough to get him. Sounds believable to me.

Who is the third? I believe Amy Williams was a Sayler hire if that is that who you're thinking of. At the very least, however, Herbster was "in the know" on that as the Asst. AD. Yup yup I forgot this is already year 4 for her. I will give him 2.5 if hes able to get this one done.

This could be a long day! It's hard for me to fathom though that we would spend the money on hiring a search firm, supposedly do a nation-wide search, and only interview 3 candidates, 1 of which was a courtesy interview to Wesley. Then after all of that, we apparently have found our guy, offered him the job (knowing that it would take $$$ to get him from a school in the same conference) and shoot him a low ball offer. Man, that would be disappointing to find out. Up to this point, I have felt pretty good about the process so far, but last night it just felt like the whole thing was handled poorly. With the leak of the offer to Mick, to the rumors exploding that it was a done deal, to the reports of him acknowledging the offer but not accepting it, to the tweets about him denying leaving to his players. This has turned into a mess for all involved right now.
Hopefully the dust settles today and we get our guy. If Neilson decides to stay put and we quickly offer the position to DeBoer, it would seem to me that he is the only other true candidate and the search firm was a waste of money. I don't want to be negative, and I have absolutely no idea of all that goes into this process, so I will end with optimism and say that Herby has done a good job in the past with hires for our programs at the U and I expect that he will do the same in this situation.

WE WANT BOB!

Welcome to the social media world of hiring a college football coach. None of us really know what is going on and there is alot of misinformation thrown around. It will all shake out soon enough.

Agreed. Rumors and inuendos usually come from people with an agenda - pro or con. We don't know how many people were on the original target list, who or how many were interviewed etc. David Sayler was interviewed and hired at some distant airport lounge.

Just found out that Wesley was not the only USD coach to apply for the job.
On a side note Mick is saying that the information he got, did NOT come from USD.

I suspect the money rumor is being twisted. What we don't have to offer is a multi year contract. I suspect the wage is otherwise fair but they want more money to compensate for a lack of a guaranteed term.

There is no way they offered him less than what he is making now.

Once word got out that he hadn't accepted the job yet, rumors start flying about why. It' the world of social media. IMO, it's appears simple. He was offered the job, simply wants to consider the offer. In the mean time he told his team just that. By the time it takes to get 80-90 players together, social media was already running with rumors.

If all the above information is true, I'd take a pass on the WIU coach. I want somebody who would leap at this opportunity; someone who wants to prove himself and show what he can do. Otherwise, why apply in the first place?
Taking a day - one day - to think things over is enough time.

Agreed on both of these posts, I don't believe the entire list is public yet and if indeed we missed on Nielson, I think it was a well taken risk to go after him. As a previous poster stated it would have been a "coup", which by its definition is a little messy. I doubt we will end up with a coach by default, in Daves we trust!

Maybe Neilson leaked the offer to Mick so he could use it as bargaining chips...a conspiracy in the making(dun, dun, dun....(think perry mason or matlock type theme music)). Could there have been a 2nd shooter on the grassy nole. Better check the Zapruder film and see if Neilson was there in Dallas on that fateful November day. I kid, I kid....its Friday

I kid, I kid....its Friday It's not like WIU is flush with cash right now. If you are taking that gamble you better know that they have the cash to pay you more. Otherwise you look like a guy that is looking to jump ship when the first offer with more cash comes along. That is not really appealing to recruits or the fan base.
