I agree they look good. Will they wear them at home sometimes too with the red uniforms??

Some notes from Nielson's talk at Pizza Ranch in Sioux Falls yesterday:
6 to 7 true freshen will make the trip to NM and most likely all will see some playing time. There could be more freshmen playing before the year is out.
Up to 10 D linemen will travel to NM.
All 3 quarterbacks will likely play, Simmons is also practicing with the return men so that could be a possibility.
Wicked schedule for '16, facing nearly all ranked teams.
Calvin Strong is still a question mark as they are waiting on summer grades.
John Wessel is out with injury until at least the North Dakota (UND) game - a key piece in the defensive alignment.
This was my first occasion to hear Nielson in person and I was impressed. Although I believe he is the right person for the job I am also hearing it will take a couple years to bring the talent level up to the rest of the league. This appears to be born out by the number of freshmen who are expected to play this year.

Do freshman typically not travel with the team?

It's a little discouraging because I have been hearing the "it's going to take some time to bring the talent level up" thing for years. I thought Joe did an entire overhaul of the program during his time here. Didn't he leave us on a solid foundation? That's what we were all told. Haven't we been in a youth movement for years and we just needed "a few more birthdays"? Now we're looking at yet another youth movement. This gets old.
As you can tell I'm not in the mood for excuses. Win now, that's all I want to see. My expectations are an upper half of the conference finish, anything less I will consider a failure. Just get it done. You can start by beating that ag school in Brookings this year. It would be a nice way for them to open the new cattle yard.

Perhaps my sources are being more cautious than necessary. Nielson did not suggest anything of the sort. However, if Nielson believes he will need to play 6 or more of his freshmen recruits it would lead me to think they might be better than what is in the cupboard - or its the continued problem with lack of depth in key areas.

Gosh everyone needs to relax! We're not the only college team that will play some freshman. Many FBS teams regularly start freshman! It's all about talent. I think the most important two issues are how well the Yotes run the new offense and how well the Ds front 7 can play. Nielson is wise not to predict miracles or be overly giddy right away. I'm optimistic and excited to see the "new" version of Coyote FB. GO YOTES!!!

I'm guessing we go 5-6 again this year, but really who knows at this point? We nearly made the playoffs last year and so it isn't outlandish to think we may improve a game and do it this year. The first year under Nielsen I'd accept 5-6 so long as we remove the blowouts in conference play.

Maybe coach Nielson is accelerating the process to get better faster by playing and developing talented freshman sooner. If they're good enough, play'em,don't waste their limited time as a college athlete by keeping them on the bench. The games are where the real learning experience takes place.I wouldn't like to think he's forced to play them, for any reason.I would rather he plays them because he thinks they're ready to contribute. Will be interesting if he does play a lot of freshmen though,I'll say that much.

I am looking forward to seeing some of the freshman play. I think there are some good football players in this last class. I think the area to see some young guys play in in the front 7. I have no idea, but I would think Jake Richardson should get some time at DE.

I'd rather have a 5th year senior tearing it up than have a first year freshman just competing. Having that seniority on your team and building up the program is more important long term. Just look at what NDSU does.
All I've seen when we put freshman on the field is players getting hurt because they are not physically mature to handle the rigors of MVFC play (just look at our RB situation over the years), or a freshman has some success and decides he's to good for FCS now and transfers out. Yeah, that is a direct shot and that is one reason you don't play true freshman. Good programs keep some of their young talent in reserve and the cupboard stocked.
Heck, I'd like to see the NCAA actually look out for the student-athlete and make incoming freshman ineligible for varsity competition. Adjusting to college is hard enough without playing varsity football.

You are showing your age 53. You would like to change the rule back to the 60's when freshman could not play? If a kid is not developed enough to play they will be redshirted.
